Stuart Maynard Praises Defensive Display as Notts County Draw with Tranmere

PON_News

Notts County began their 2024-25 League Two campaign with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park.

The match, characterised by County’s dominance in possession and a robust defensive display, showcased the team’s commitment to securing clean sheets and setting a solid foundation for the season ahead.

Head coach Stuart Maynard expressed his satisfaction with the result but felt his side could have come away with more. "Really delighted with the point. I think we deserved more. I think we had the best chances," Maynard stated, reflecting on the team's performance. "We had to change the shape to get back on top again. The minute we changed it, we got on top again."

The Magpies controlled much of the game, particularly in the second half, where they pinned Tranmere back into their own half for long periods. Despite a series of promising opportunities, including a near-miss from striker Alessandra Jatta, County were unable to find the back of the net.

Maynard highlighted the need for better execution in the final third, saying, "Just a bit more quality in the final third, and I think we would have come away with three points. But it's the first day of the season. We've got a few bodies out as well. As you can see, we're a little bit light, but they're getting there."

One of the key talking points ahead of the match was the late departure of Aaron Nemane, who left the club after an offer was accepted the night before the game. In his place, new signing Conor Grant made his debut, despite only joining the squad shortly before the match. Maynard praised Grant’s impact, stating, "What a debut for him! He didn't train with us. The deal got done late on Friday, so he didn't train with us. But it was an offer that the club just couldn't refuse, and that's the way that you have to work at times."

Grant, who played a key role in Barnsley's playoff campaign last season while on loan, brought much-needed stability to the Notts County midfield. "Conor's a player that we've admired for a very long time. He's someone that we've tracked for a very long time," Maynard explained. "We believe that we're getting a top player."

The defensive solidity on display was another highlight of the match. New signings Jacob Beadau and Matty Platt put in impressive performances at the back, with goalkeeper Alex Bass commanding his area with authority. Maynard was quick to praise the defensive unit, stating, "Defensively, we defended our box excellently today. It's not easy for a goalie to come, he probably had four crosses to come for, and three of them he came and took. Unbelievable and just relieves the pressure."

Maynard also acknowledged the contribution of the forward players in maintaining defensive shape, noting, "If you look at the work ethic from AJ [Jatta], the way he set the tone today, Sammy Austin, Cedwyn Scott, their work ethic was unbelievable. We stopped them putting balls into the box, so you've got to give huge credit to them."

Despite the lack of goals, the performance provided plenty of encouragement for the Notts County faithful. The travelling supporters, who were vocal throughout the match, played their part in driving the team forward in the closing stages. "The fans, they were in here early. We got here probably an hour and a half before kick-off. There were probably 100 to 200 in there, all singing and welcoming the lads," Maynard said. "They got behind the lads and drove us on, and they nearly got us to win."

Looking ahead, Maynard remains focused on the challenges that lie ahead, including the upcoming Carabao Cup fixture against Shrewsbury Town. While the head coach is mindful of the demands of a long season, he is eager for a cup run, stating, "We all want cup runs. We all want that dream cup run away to Manchester United and playing those big games for the players, for the fans, for us as a management team, for everyone."

As the season progresses, Notts County will look to build on their solid start, with the squad’s depth and adaptability set to play a crucial role in their pursuit of success in League Two.

i thought the changes he made helped bring us more into the game, i think defensively we look very calm and that focus needs to continue as we start to push in further into the season. the opening game was a good one despite the goalless draw. i dont think tranmere played that badly, they just struggled with our quality.

As draws go, Notts were solid and looked very comfortable. One thing I would like to praise is the number of times we showed hunger for winning the ball back. Sometimes it became scrappy and difficult, but we persisted as a team and overcame most of those incidents.

By retaining the ball, it gave us a good platform going forward. I really hope this is a sign of more to come under Stuart Maynard. The Reedtz have given the club the focus to improve in the back line and goalkeeper positions, and I think it shows.

I am pleased for Stuart Maynard. He took a lot of criticism early on, and it was made worse with Luke Williams departing. It hurt to see Williams leave, but it hurt more to see Maynard take all the blame. I think he speaks sense. Some might appeal to his way of talking, but I think he shows a good level of understanding when processing the game in his mind. When you’re so quick to be interviewed, it might be difficult to recall everything, but he says mostly what we need to hear and he doesn’t mask it.

It was a nail-biting game, but I’m incredibly proud of the lads. The defensive display was just fantastic, and you could see the commitment from every player. Maynard’s decision to change the shape partway through was a masterstroke, and it really helped us to take control of the game. The new signings, Jacob Beadau and Matty Platt, were impeccable at the back, and it's clear we have a lot to look forward to this season.

However, there’s a bit of concern about our ability to finish. Despite dominating possession and creating several promising chances, we couldn’t find the net. Alessandra Jatta came close, but we need better execution in the final third. With a few bodies out, there's room for improvement. I’m hopeful that once the team gels more and we get some players back, the goals will come.

It’s a start the team can build on. Quite frustrating that we couldn’t get a win, but it wasn’t through a lack of effort or trying. Tranmere just made it hard, but Bass was excellent in goal.

I was really impressed with how the team controlled the game, especially in the second half. Stuart Maynard’s tactical changes seemed to be spot on, and the defensive unit was rock solid. Conor Grant’s debut was particularly noteworthy given he hadn’t had time to train with the squad. His impact on the midfield was immense. We might have been a bit light upfront, but it’s only the first game of the season. A lot to be optimistic about!

The goalless draw against Tranmere was packed with positives for Notts County. Stuart Maynard’s satisfaction with the defensive display was echoed by fans, as Beadau and Platt were standout performers. Bass’s command in goal was noteworthy.

Grant impressively settled into the team, despite his late arrival. His stability in midfield was commendable. The team’s control in possession, particularly in the second half, showed promise for the season. The need for sharper execution in the final third was evident, but it’s only the first game. With a few key players out, there's room to grow. The fan support was fantastic and really boosted the team.

Good insight from Stuart Maynard. The draw was a good result, and there is a lot to take from the game. I think Maynard got his ideas across, and the training seems to be working nicely towards getting the players to settle in together. Very pleased to see the defence acknowledged, but I do think the draw was the fair result.

Stuart Maynard seems to have a clear vision for Notts County this season, and it's great to see. The team was dominant in possession and defensively sound, which is a strong foundation to build on. While the game against Tranmere didn't yield any goals, the opportunities were there. Maynard’s point about needing better execution in the final third is spot on. It was a challenging match, but with a few key players out and a debutant in Conor Grant making such an impact, the signs are promising.

It’s unfortunate that we couldn’t find the back of the net, but there were definitely some positive takeaways from the match. The team’s performance showed a lot of promise, with solid defensive work and some creative attacking play. If we can build on this foundation, I’m confident we’ll see better results in the upcoming fixtures. Keep the faith, and let’s continue to support the lads!

I'm very encouraged by the Notts performance especially at the back. Such a massive look to the side as well as a massive result & a clean sheet.

I must say that Bass looks very good and I thought he commanded his area very well.

And that back line, what a difference they made and will continue to make during the season.

And with a bit of more luck, Notts could have even won the game in those last fifteen minutes.

Last word regarding Stuart Maynard, his team selection was good and his substitutions nearly made a difference.

All in all I'm very pleased with the performance & long may it continue.

I thought the midfield defended just as well as the defenders; we didn’t only rely on the backline. Sam Austin really got involved, and one of the best parts of his game against Tranmere was his ability to win the ball back. It’s not just him either; it seems everyone’s been told they must win it back quickly. The defence was superb, and I hope it continues.
