Match Report: McGoldrick Magic as Notts County Triumph Over Swindon Town

PON_News

Notts County continued their impressive form in League Two with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Swindon Town, as David McGoldrick's brace secured all three points in a pulsating encounter at the County Ground.

This victory, in what is Notts County's second season back in the Football League, is a testament to the Magpies’ growing momentum as they push for promotion.

The match started with both sides showing intent, but it was Swindon who drew first blood in the 21st minute. Gavin Kilkenny found space outside the box and unleashed a powerful right-footed shot that nestled into the bottom left corner, leaving Notts County’s goalkeeper Alex Bass with no chance. The early setback silenced the travelling supporters, who had been in full voice prior to the goal.

Despite going behind, Notts County responded with the character and resilience that has become their hallmark this season. Just nine minutes later, David McGoldrick brought the Magpies level. After some excellent build-up play, McGoldrick received the ball on the left side of the box from Conor Grant and made no mistake, firing a low shot into the bottom right corner. The equaliser was met with loud cheers from the away end, as the visitors regained their foothold in the game.

The remainder of the first half saw both teams creating chances, with Swindon looking particularly dangerous. Ollie Clarke tested Bass with a shot from distance, but the Notts County goalkeeper was equal to it, making a comfortable save. Jodi Jones, who had been lively for the Magpies, also came close, but his effort from outside the box narrowly missed the target.

The second half began with Swindon applying pressure on the Notts County defence. The hosts looked to regain their lead, with Harry Smith and Joel Cotterill both seeing their efforts saved or blocked by the resilient Magpies' backline. However, it was Notts County who would eventually seize the initiative.

In the 80th minute, McGoldrick once again showed his quality. After receiving a pass from Jodi Jones, the experienced forward unleashed a precise right-footed strike from outside the box, curling the ball into the bottom left corner. The goal sparked wild celebrations among the travelling fans, as it put Notts County 2-1 up with ten minutes left to play.

As the clock ticked down, Swindon threw everything forward in search of an equaliser. Aaron Drinan came closest for the home side, but his low drive from the right side of the box was brilliantly saved by Bass. The Magpies' defence, led by Matty Platt, stood firm against the late onslaught, ensuring that the visitors held on to their slender lead.

Six minutes of added time were announced, but Notts County remained composed, seeing out the game to secure a vital victory on the road. The win not only bolsters their promotion hopes but also demonstrates the team’s ability to grind out results in tough circumstances.

David McGoldrick’s brace was the difference on the day, with the veteran striker proving his worth in front of goal. The victory keeps Notts County well in the mix for a top spot in League Two, as they continue to build on their return to the Football League.

What a thrilling match against Swindon Town! The team showed immense character and resilience, especially after conceding such an early goal. McGoldrick’s equaliser was exactly what we needed to gain our footing, and from then on, it felt like we had a real chance to turn the game around. His experience and composure were evident in both his goals, particularly the second one which was sheer class.

It's also great to see the defence holding strong under pressure. Matty Platt and his teammates were excellent in neutralising Swindon’s late attacks, and Bass made some crucial saves. This win is a significant morale booster and a testament to the grit and determination of the squad. Here’s hoping we can carry this momentum forward and secure promotion.

This is a win that should give all Notts fans satisfaction. This win was such an untypical Notts win that we have witnessed during the last two & a half seasons.

Notts weren't at their best, but once again the team showed character especially in that second half when they were under pressure.

David, Didzy McGoldrick, what can you say about him?  He's pure class, two goals out of nothing.

But we shouldn't forget the rest of the team. Bass in goal exudes confidence that helps the Notts defence,.

Crowley, playing out of position, & Jones playing as an attacking midfielder, with Grant supporting Didzy.

All the team plus the substitutes worked hard to grind this win out. It's great to see players come on as substitutes & do such good work too.

Stuart was so pleased with the team & it is great that the team can play with flair against Grimsby & grind a result against Swindon.

And, the squad can only get better in my opinion.

This was a good match from start to finish. McGoldrick’s contributions were nothing short of magic, that second goal was a masterclass in finishing. The defence deserves a huge amount of credit too, especially in those tense final minutes. It was a complete team effort and a well-deserved victory that keeps our promotion dreams alive.

The team showed great resilience after conceding the early goal. The defence held firm under considerable pressure, with Platt and Bass putting in solid performances. This win is a significant step towards our promotion ambitions and proves we can dig deep and secure vital points. The spirit and camaraderie in the squad are evident, and it’s great to see them rally together for wins like these. A memorable match and a fantastic result for Notts!

swindon gave a good account of themselves, the opening goal was very well taken and i dont think there was anything alex bass could do. it stung to see us trial earlyish into the game but notts showed some good character and turned the game on its head. i was not sure about david mcgoldrick starting but again, he showed his worth and both of his goals were such a joy to see go in.

This match truly showcased the grit and determination that Notts County has developed. Going behind early could have easily shaken the squad, but they rallied magnificently. McGoldrick was in phenomenal form, especially with that second goal which was a moment of sheer brilliance. Swindon put up a tough fight, especially in the second half, but our defence was equal to the task, with Matty Platt leading from the back. Alex Bass’s crucial saves ensured we held onto the lead. It’s wins like these that make a difference in a promotion push. The team’s resilience and quality are clear for all to see. Here’s to more results like this one.

Diddzy has bided his time well and showed what impact he can make when he starts. I don't think every game will suit this decision, but there's no doubt he's still such a vital part of this squad. I thought Notts defended well. I would leap praise on Alex Bass, he looks such a quality keeper at this level, and it's still hard to believe he's actually ours and not here just on loan. It's a good team performance, which showed spirit and fight to pull it back and to win in the end.

The lads showed real heart and tenacity to come from behind and secure what could be a pivotal win in our promotion push. McGoldrick was sensational with both goals. His second, in particular, was out of the top drawer. The defence also deserves massive credit for standing firm under relentless pressure from Swindon. Bass’s save towards the end was top-notch. This match was a perfect example of what we can achieve with a blend of skill, experience, and determination. It’s victories like these that can define a season.

It was a true test of character for Notts County and they passed with flying colours. McGoldrick’s performance was top-notch, with his second goal particularly impressive. The team’s response to going behind was commendable, they didn’t let their heads drop and kept pushing. The defensive effort at the end showed real mental toughness, with Bass making some vital saves. This kind of resilience and quality is what’s needed for a successful promotion campaign. This victory will surely boost the team’s confidence. Proud of the lads and looking forward to the next match. Let’s keep this momentum going!

I’m so pleased for David McGoldrick he’s had to bide his time waiting for his chance to shine and my goodness he certainly did shine, as someone else said he scored two superb goals from nothing, it just goes to show that he is true class at this level.

It was a great all round performance from the team to turn the game on its head and Bass along with the defence deserve credit for their part in keeping Swindon out.

It was a good game. Swindon looked good for their position in the league. They will probably start winning soon. We kept the ball well and used it effectively. David McGoldrick scored two great goals. We were better defensively, but we need to be more careful when passing.

The result was pleasing. Notts came back and showed determination in defending and attacking. We kept Swindon Town off, who really wanted a result. It's good to see Notts work hard to win. We don't always have to play beautiful football. This league is about getting results, and we did that yesterday.

Swindon Town played some good football. Defensively, Notts looked much stronger, even though we signed new players to strengthen our defense. I thought every player gave their all, and that's all I ask for. As for the result, I'm pleased we showed the strength and character to achieve it. We must continue from here.
