Derby manager speaks out about McGoldricks departure

Paul Warne said David McGoldrick's exit from Derby County was a "spiritual" decision as he opened up on the striker's move to boyhood club Notts County.

McGoldrick turned down the offer of a new deal with the club to join the Magpies last weekend with the forward penning a two-year contract at Meadow Lane.

The former Sheffield United striker was a huge favourite at Pride Park but the lure of returning to the club which kickstarted his career proved too difficult to resist in a move that was romance over finance.

McGoldrick was at Wembley to watch the Magpies regain their place in the Football League and he returned 19 years after his departure.

Warne said he had been trying to convince the Derby's player of the season to stay since the turn of the year but after much deliberating, the forward decided to head home.

"I am sorry to see him go," Warne told Rams TV. "Since January I've been encouraging him to sign a contract. He will tell you this but he just wanted to get to the summer to see where he is at.

"At one stage I wasn't even sure he was going to play on. He had an amazing season. I wanted to keep him. We had a conversation at the training ground for about three hours about two to three weeks ago now.

"He wanted more time to think about it, but we had to put a deadline on it because it couldn't keep dragging out for either team in fairness. It wasn't a financial thing. It was a spiritual thing to play for his boyhood club.

"If Derby fans played for Bristol City and Derby came in, you'd want to go and play for Derby. It was the same for Didzy.

It's refreshing to read something where the former manager comprehends and harbours no ill will towards the departure of the player. This speaks volumes about David McGoldrick and his relationship with the Derby County staff being mutual.

Well we know that he left with their blessing, so it's something that reinforces the well-wishes to David McGoldrick.

McGoldrock did well with Derby, so there's no reason why they should feel a player that is out of contract and who wants to join his boyhood club as anything disloyal or against his former club. Players move on all the time, but it is quite common for managers, clubs and their fans to be resentful when a player doesn't re-sign a new deal. I have seen some nasty comments to Ruben Rodrigues, so it makes Derby look classy with their well-wishes. Most of their fans have done the same; I haven't seen a single complaint or moan from the Rams supporters.

I agree @Chris I hate it when our fans boo our former players, it’s such a shame especially if they’ve been good servants to the club.

It’s a glowing comment for David McGoldrick. When people take the time to praise former colleagues, it shows just how much of a coup it is that they have decided to come back to Notts.

In one of Paul Warne's many updates, before we knew for definite which league Derby would be in this coming season,he said he didn't want to hold any player to ransom.He was referring to Krystian Bielik, Derby's polish international,on loan at Brum.Warne added that this applied to anyone who didn't want to be at Derby,for whatever reason.He also mentioned that he was trying to get players contracts sorted but understood that circumstances could affect players decisions.It became increasingly obvious that McGoldrick was struggling with his dilemma but at the same time Warne was accepting what Didzy was going to do.I think most Rams fans understood how things were developing and so found it easier to take the news when it became fact.

with derby wanting to keep david mcgoldrick that for me showed how good it was for notts to see his homecoming return. he might be close to retirement but by stepping down it does prolong his career and as he has said himself. if he can help notts along the way, its only positive.

I believe that Derby is showing great respect for David McGoldrick's decision to leave. They understand his wishes and are supportive of his desire to make a positive impact. It is admirable that they are sending him off with their best wishes.

Paul Warne does sound like a decent manager. He’s handled the situation well, as have Derby. I think they’ll be able to attract someone young and, although they may miss his experience, they’ll be stronger for it. He’s said some nice things about David McGoldrick.
