Another departure

Featured Replies

He likely wasnโ€™t happy about being third in line and wanted the coaching role for himself. Itโ€™s understandable if he felt he should have had more responsibility. I donโ€™t think weโ€™ll miss him. He came in through Football Radar, and his time here didnโ€™t really stand out.

A bit surprising. Was promoted well and clearly valued. Perhaps he got a bit above his pay grade and thought that after applying for the top job and not getting it / not being kept on as assistant, he wanted to leave.

He was down on the website as Assistant Head Coach, & this is a big surprise. When new coaches are bought in it can be difficult for those already there. Otherwise it's better not to speculate. Will be interesting if Notts replace him.

He's gone & we move on. Good luck to him for the future.

Perhaps Rachel in accounts realised that the salaries of the support staff had reached saturation point.....it must be 1 hell of a figure......and someone had to be sacrificed...........Alves drew the short straw.....a reversed decision....First in ....First out!!!!

Maybe he didnโ€™t want to return to a first team coach role now there are more staff around. He might have preferred staying as assistant head coach instead. The club may have noticed fans were worried about having too many people involved. So, they couldโ€™ve made a tough call and let someone go.

I do wonder if Sam Slocombe might step in as the new goalkeeping coach. It would be an interesting move.

My personal thoughts, we were better with the Saunders Bros... the way the season panned out post January, we lacked some magical thoughts to break down resolute defences...perhaps the build up play was too pedestrian...

This is a bit strange and unexpected. Talk of him being interested in the top job are just conjecture, he wasn't even assistant head coach until a couple of months ago.

It was probably in the offing though. That would explain why he wasn't mentioned when the new coaching team was announced. Perhaps he never had any intention of being part of the new team for whatever reason.

In his interview with Radio Nottingham Christoffer Reedtz said that Alves was very much a part of the management team, that was only a day or so ago.

Keep up..Collis is the goalkeeper coach.....Sam is the 1st team coach .....very strange for a Goalie to coach outfield players.....i wonder if that as happened anywhere else????...Another experiment that could be soon be doomed to failure!!!!

True @Fan of Big Tone, but he was put on the spot in that interview and couldn't really spill the beans. His answer was quite emphatic though.

Plenty of former goalkeepers have gone on to be a manager. The current Florist boss was a keeper and it didn't do him any harm.

He's head coach there @gtownjohnno and was a coach before. The vast majority of managers were coaches previously.

I think goalkeepers can be at a disadvantage in terms of tactical awareness compared to a former midfielder, but it very much depends on the individual. I wouldn't write anybody off as coach due to the position they played in.

I get the feeling he wasnโ€™t happy about being passed over and wanted to keep the role heโ€™d worked hard for. If heโ€™d gone back to being a coach, maybe heโ€™d have felt like heโ€™d lost his chance to move forward again. With a few new coaches arriving and him still wanting to be assistant, the club probably felt they had enough in place. That must have made it harder for Joao Alves to take a step back, so in the end, they both agreed it was time for him to find something new.

With Joao Alves leaving, itโ€™s still possible that other members of staff could move on too, no matter what their current role or title is.

It could be that Steve Collis is on his way out, which might explain why Sam Slocombe has stepped into a more hands-on role. If thatโ€™s the case, maybe heโ€™ll take up the position of goalkeeping coach full time.

I know itโ€™s not common for goalkeepers to coach outfield players, but they do see the game from a different view and can share useful tips. Things like what a striker does in a one-on-one or how to put a goalkeeper under pressure.

I was only wondering if there had been a shift behind the scenes and whether we might see more changes. Just sharing a thought, not stating anything as fact.

Sam Slocombeโ€™s new role is certainly an interesting one. Itโ€™s not often you see a goalkeeper moving into a broader coaching position. Thereโ€™s definitely value in the perspective keepers bring, especially when it comes to reading strikers or dealing with one-on-ones. Maybe itโ€™s part of a wider shift behind the scenes or just a fresh idea being trialled. Either way, it feels worth giving it time rather than rushing to call it a failure. Though judging by some of the overexcited responses, youโ€™d think a few had just woken up mid-rant without checking what day it is.

It would be strange to announce Sam Slocombe as one of the first-team coaches for him to then suddenly become the and goalkeeper coach. If Steve Collis did depart Sam could step in but I would guess we would bring in another goal-keeper coach.

As for Joao going, he most likely wouldโ€™ve met Martin Paterson in the week for the first time and maybe after this he was unhappy with the sort of role he was getting or he just thought they have too differing views and perhaps wonโ€™t work well together, who knows.

Regardless, itโ€™s more unanswered questions and something that wasnโ€™t planned. Itโ€™s not been the smooth good feel start to pre-season everyone wanted. I do feel the next signing needs to be one that can trigger that feeling of optimism again...
