Josh Martin: Stay or Go?

Josh Martin’s contract could’ve in theory expired after today’s game, all we know is that he's contracted until some point in January but we don’t know how long… So with that in mind, would you extend his contract to the end of the season, or further even?

I’d keep him until the end of the season, hopefully even keep him for longer is he continues to play well.

When he’s played at wingback, whilst only having minimal playing time, he’s never looked that comfortable there. He did well against Walsall though, definitely better around the oppositions box than his own but he really excelled in the middle when he played just behind Jatta against Cheltenham. I'd like to see him play here more often.

I'd be tempted to keep him on till the end of the season just on the basis of the last two games. We've finally seen that there's a good player in there - just look at his beautifully weighted assist today. If he produces it regularly in the second half of the season, we can think about longer.

Yes keep him until the end of season then review his performances. He’s certainly having a great run of form in the last two matches.

Until about three weeks ago, I'd have driven him to his next club myself. Something seems to have clicked recently though, not sure if he's finally settled into a system and showing his genuine quality or it is just temporary form.

Maybe he’s just upping his game to get a new contract, if that’s the case once he’s got the contract he could revert back to type.

You can't judge a player from a few brief appearances because Josh Martin seems to have settled well. There's definitely a player in him, so I would keep him if his wages are fair. The only reason not to extend his stay would be if his wages are higher than what a rotational player might get, which I doubt. We need to get the best out of players who arrive with low morale. They can be the biggest bargains, so we must ensure he doesn't lose his way.

i guess it depends on money. he does look like hes coming into the games more and does seem settled which i know would take time but i do also wonder if @Fan of Big Tone is right about him trying to earn his contract. i would like to think its more about feeling settled and a part of the team, rather than performing better to get a new deal with us or elsewhere. this would make me more minded towards letting him go.

yet based on him feeling settled and his recent performance, i think he should stay.

I reckon he might stay, considering he's still quite young and has potential to grow. We've got some excellent players he can learn from, and if we achieve promotion, he could prove himself further in League One. It's important to give him the benefit of the doubt regarding his recent improved performances, as we hope he genuinely feels settled within our squad.

Possibly, I think Jarvis and Jones as wingbacks at the same time would be a touch overkill though as both are wingers really. I can see him being used more in one of the three attacking roles. In the little interview with Stuart Maynard he says Jarvis can play through the middle off a striker and also as a No.9.

I’m not sure I see Martin as wingback long-term either though, I think potentially against the better teams, when he has to defend more it won’t suit him at all. That would mean potentially we’d have Didzy, Crowley, Grant, Edwards, Martin and now Jarvis all vying for spots behind the striker. I do think the addition of Jarvis makes it harder for Martin to get into the team.

Still not convinced that he is worth keeping to be honest. I didn’t see the Cheltenham game but thought he had a steady game against Walsall. I wasn’t impressed with his performance against Swindon and thought he flattered to deceive, a lot of nimble footwork but more often than not he played the simple short ball back rather than attacking and taking on his full back.

I doubt we are paying him much but would give him no more than a contract till the end of the season, and I wouldn’t be disappointed if he leaves with Brown in the next week or two, especially if it creates space for a better option up front.
