My question to PON members.

Should Notts offer a contract extension to Didzy?

We know that David McGoldrick is not just a colossus on the pitch even though he's 37 years old, but he is big off the pitch for Notts too.

David McGoldrick has scored 26 goals in 56 league games for Notts County

Boss Stuart Maynard called veteran forward David McGoldrick "Superman" after the fit-again striker came off the bench to seal Tuesday's win at Grimsby Town.

He is so influential & a great leader as well as being a fantastic role model for the other Notts players.

The performance of the match squad go up when he's on the bench & field of play. It was there for all to see against Grimsby.

His brilliance on the field at this level is unmatched too. His ability to score a goal out of nothing could be an important factor for Notts during the season run in

I believe that Notts should offer him an extension if he wants it, maybe including a player coaching role, where he can study for his coaching certificates if he wanted it.

I totally agree, I think he definitely deserves another contract he is one of our own and waived a good contract at Derby to come home to Notts, he’s done a fantastic job for us and is a real asset to the club whether he’s playing or not.

Another reason to keep him.

Well done Didzy.

Lifetime contract.

* Clause: Once he is physically no longer able to stand on at least one leg and/or requires assistance of Zimmer frame - enters coaching contract.

I would offer him another year, but at a much lower wage. If it is true that he is our highest earner, I would adjust the offer to a fair amount, taking into account his age and the likelihood that he may not play every match, even though he has proven his value this season. Next season could be different, depending on the league. However, if he stays on high wages, I would decline.

I agree @ExiledPie that Notts should offer him another year, however, Didzy offers the team so much more than being a player, his presence inspired and motivated the team to work harder when he's playing.

I would offer him a similar wage to what he's already on. I think he's worth it.

Yes would definitely offer him another contract due to what he brings on the pitch and the touches that can turn a game but also the experience and advice he can provide off the pitch.  I think we lost a lot of that when both Jim O'brien and John Bostock left, I think the value of this to younger and inexperienced players is invaluable.

@Pies79 I agree over Jim O'Brien. Notts missed a trick when they let him go.

if david mcgoldrick feels he can still perform to the level we have seen this season, and notts adds more quality around him and take into consideration there is a need for someone like him to fill in when he cant play, then i am all for giving him a new one year deal. last season i would not have said this, but he has earned it with how much he has self driven notts to wins.

I was almost a touch undecided, only because I was starting to be worried that we were becoming over-reliant on him. And I think that can be a bad thing, we can’t expect a player coming to the end of his career to be our saviour all the time and bail us out when we are struggling.

But at the same time of course it would be daft to not have him in the squad. I’d 100% have him for another season, but I think we need to prioritise getting in at least 1 really good No.10 over the summer as well.

He looked really fresh coming on against Grimsby after his break. Ok it wasn't through choice, but having a period of time not playing actually helped him. We know when it comes to the weekend, midweek runs of fixtures he needs a break to be at his best so we also need to sign someone who will eventually take his spot.

He's got at least one more season, and given the impact in tough games this season I can't see how we could let him go.

Totally.  I was hoping they might bring Jim back when the Saunders brothers left.

Yes, another year for Didzy, regardless if we win promotion or not. Great combo of magic feet and endless work rate.

Players with a mission and determination often show great self-motivation and drive. Jim O'Brien was eager to be part of the team that brought the club back to the English Football League, and he played a key role in achieving that. David McGoldrick has been outstanding this season. His performances towards the end of the 2023-2024 season were not solely his fault, but also a reflection of the lack of quality in the squad overall. I believe he has at least one more season left in him, but the decision ultimately lies with him. If Notts secures promotion to League One, I can imagine he might decide to retire.

The role I see in David McGoldrick is a player that performs by example, and when in form is difficult to see replaced in the starting XI even at the age of 37.

I can understand the comments about the reliance we have on him, but this is a sign of the quality he brings and the lack of cover for what he brings to the team. I am not suggesting we need to sign someone similar, as having difficult options is always helpful, but I am thinking about the skills players only gain from experience and having played at a much higher level.

I would offer him another year, and I would hope he considered it.

At this point, I don't begrudge him being one of our highest (if not the highest) earners. I think he has worked for it, and proven his worth. Though, I think moving forward we might need to offer a little less, knowing that his role could change at any point. None of us can say if he can keep going; he will know his body. I can admit I have been skeptical and a little cynical of McGoldrick at times, but there's no doubt he's been a major part in the club moving forward.

If I were the club, I would see if he's interested in helping with the academy players and passing his wealth of knowledge to them in a playing/coaching role.

I can't imagine money will be a problem as he loves the club and our owners play fair. We won't be looking to underpay him and he won't be looking to squeeze every penny out of us.

His influence right throughout the club is massive so absolutely offer him another deal.
