Gagliardi DoF leaves

Director of Football Roberto Gagliardi has left the club by mutual agreement.

Our owners, Chris and Alex Reedtz, said: “We thank Roberto for his considerable efforts and wish him well for the future.

“In particular, we would like to recognise his hard work during a very busy transfer window which saw a number of important signings added to the squad.

“As we take some time to consider how he might be replaced, we would like to assure supporters that our scouting and recruitment operation will continue unaffected.

“We remain in close dialogue with our head coach Martin Paterson and his staff to ensure they have the support they need to build on our promising start to the season.”

what a weird appointment and decision to make so early, seems like hes paying the price for the recruitment that has come in. i hope whoever comes in next is more determined to get the right players that fit our system.

The man talked a good game but that was about it really. His recruitment strategy was a head scratcher to say the least. I mean was Roos really the best option out there? I think we all know the answer to that one!

I think it's a bit strange that it's happened all of a sudden without any form of unrest being reported. I know the club is quite good at keeping things internal, but I wouldn't have expected this decision. What makes it weirder for me is that Roberto has worked under the Reedtz before, so what has changed? It feels somewhat like when Tom Weal was surprisingly replaced, and fans like @Piethagoram speculated it might have been down to Aidan Stone being recommended as our first team keeper.

I honestly don't know what to make of it, if the club has decided it's not working, or if Roberto expressed this. It doesn't really matter, but things like this play straight into the hands of the rumour mill.

A field where dreams become reality.

Somehow I think this development was somewhat inevitable. Nothing against Roberto, but he did seem to lack the experience that this important role required.

I'm sure the Club will remain silent on the reasons for him going but it does seem that things have happened very suddenly. Was it a clash of personalities, or was it something more profound.

All we do know is that there is going to be more disruption around the management just when Notts are facing their toughest game of the season at Gillingham on Saturday.

I get the feeling Roberto Gagliardi was the one who made this decision. Why he chose to leave is anyone’s guess. Maybe he wasn’t happy with how fans were talking about him, or perhaps he’s got a better job lined up elsewhere. It could be a mix of both.

It doesn’t feel like the Reedtz brothers pushed him out. If anything, it seems like Roberto decided it was time to move on.

It's good that the owners have cut their losses on this one. They clearly try to do the right thing for the club and are willing to make decisions that other owners would see as a loss of face.

Just speculating but it's possible someone like Joe Palmer or Martin Paterson has shared a few home truths with the owners about what it takes to be an effective operator in the transfer market.

The club needs to do more to avoid mistakes like this, especially with signings who only stay for a season before being let go. It’s happening too often. It makes Notts look like things aren’t quite working together. Everyone should be pulling in the same direction, and these short-term moves don’t help.

It’s also a waste of time and money. With a bit more planning and foresight, we could avoid these situations and build something more stable.

Shocked.

It's not like the Reedtz's Notts to have a key hire blow up so quickly.

Were the working relationships strained. Did technical board meetings when the team starts 1 pt from 9 set a toxic tone?

Were the Bros' expecting more recruitment umph with no sign of any top talent coming in to replace Didzy, Crowley, Bass etc? Was failing to add quality to the squad in the last window a big disappointment? This is where my mind's going. But I know nowt so take no notice of me :)

I guess we’ll never know the reason for this sudden departure and there’s no point really in speculating, it certainly came as a shock, I only hope the next appointment is the right one to take us forward.

Not being privy to the details surrounding this decision it's hard to know what to make of it. However the the decision was made by mutual agreement. So it's seems both parties felt it was the right thing to do. Certainly recruitment hasn't been the best and there was was that longish period leading up to the end of the transfer window where no anticipated striker came in. Whether that has anything to do with it we might never know.

Not surprised or concerned by his departure.

Timing is good, we have an opportunity to either change strategy or simply change the personnel involved.

Managers/coaches and players on the pitch are far more significant than this role. I have far more faith in Paterson than some arbitrary “recruitment” guru tbh. Football managed to cope admirably without these “made up” roles for long enough.

The manager carries the can, he should call the shots.

I'd look at that as the model that got us relegated @YoopEyes, and the one with a Head of Recruitment as the model that got us back up - found us gems like Ruben, Cal, Maca, Cedwyn etc while the Head Coach was able to concentrate on the very taxing role of managing the team.

The window's closed til January now. The statement talks about how he will be replaced. We're more likely looking for someone better than Gagliardi in the role rather than switching models and asking Pato to become Arthur Daley or Delboy. He looks like Uncle Albert anyway, so it's a non-starter.

I didn't see this coming at all, but I'm relieved the owners have acted as I don't think it was working.

I'm sure we can all see that the squad is weaker. Bass, McGoldrick and Crowley have left and none has been adequately replaced. The new goalkeeper looks like a classic panic signing. We've clearly missed out on a number of signings and to fill the gap have brought in loanees of varying ability. We've also now got a bonkers collection of wing backs, some of whom no longer even make the squad.

Us PONners don't always agree on things, but there's near consensus that the squad isn't a strong as it was last season. Yet if you think back to the owners' statement last week, they mentioned that the budget this season is their highest yet. So it's not much of a reach to assume they were unhappy too and decided to pull the plug before things really went downhill.

The timing is perfect for the club as it gives us plenty of time to find a replacement in time for the January window.

Another day where Tube strikes in London making journeys hellish... A friend texted me the news re DoF. There was only going to be the question who would go first.

The DoF had plenty of time to source a decent keeper and didn't. ( and @Chris quite rightly remembers my thoughts on Aiden Stone, well done).

We needed a DoF who was EFL1 / EFL2 streetwise , not just a data reader.

I did feel like we over recruited in some areas of the team (midfielders!) and I can’t remember us having so many loan players in either, I’m sure previously the club looked at the loan market to add 1 or 2 players. It’s a risky strategy if loan players become a vital part of the team because they move on the season after.

The Brothers do usually let people get on with their jobs, from what I can gather they don’t micromanage. I wonder if the transfer window didn’t go as planned and they are disappointed or is it more to do with RG and MP seeing things too differently, if that’s the case it’s odd the director of football has left because more often than not it would be the other way round.

He did sign Matt Dennis to a three-year deal so that’s something.

Question is ... Would we have got Matt Dennis if Didsy had stayed?

I also understand that he handed a copy of his leaving agreement to Roos, who promptly dropped it😉 #Notts 🤣

We saw over the river that the relationship between a Head Coach & Director of Football can appear to get a little strained. In their case the Head Coach was fired. In Notts's case the Director of Football has gone.

I would love to have been a fly on the wall in the Notts board room at these Technical Board meetings. We witnessed Martin's frustration in his interviews at times then he basically turned full turtle and towed the line.

As I 've said the Guy could Talk the Talk, But Couldn't Walk the Walk. Now hopefully Patterson will be able to Run the team his way (something that's he's been trying over recent matches) with No interference from other channels. Now he knows what is Wanted and be able to Push the Team Forward, Success or Failure is Now In His Own Hands. Regarding a Replacement, Does the Club Really Need One?

Of course, we need a DoF..how are we to recruit players like when Jatta is eventually sold?

The old method of just a manager choosing players is for bygone days.

So the D.O.F. and the Head Of Recruitment are one and the same? I was under the Impression the Posts were held by two different people. My confusion arises in the Fact Richard Montague was always referred to as the Head of Recruitment and Not D.O.F. and the Term D.O.F. as been absent from the Clubs Titles (or hasn't been mentioned as such.) for some seasons past. Well you learn something New Every Day.
