Match Discussion Notts v Derby [Saturday 14th]

I was prepared to do some ratings, but left the match slightly depressed.

I missed the first goal as there was a longer gap than anticipated on the tram from Clifton.

I firstly disagree with @Chris, I thought Jones was really exposed defensively. He did improve and made some good challenges in the second half but the damage was already done

However, I do agree with Chris, I agree that Brisley had his worst game in a Notts shirt. Maybe it would have been interesting to see a back 3 because today our midfield was invisible.

Vaughan maybe a neat footballer but he was a poor man's Fotheringham today. I thought was needed a Bishop / O'Connor direct replacement, but on this evidence, he isn't the combative midfielder needed for L2. Just an early impression for one game though.

Hewitt, again showed he cannot pass accurately and this was ruthlessly exposed. Alessandra missed some good chances and doesnt provide an effective option.

The youth subs that came on, at least changed the dynamic of the game, proving that we can pass...so there is hope.

It would be interesting to know what Derby do differently in training..Yes, they are a Championship side but they were comfortable on the ball and passed intelligently time and again through our midfield. The gap in passing ability was immense, head in hands....

I felt the same, I knew when the first half whistle had blown that there would be no point.

It was awful the first half, I can see why Frank Lampard hasn't rushed to bring in players because they played very well - but it felt like the old Notts. No passion, little effort and a lack of respect towards the fans who paid to watch the game.

I can understand that people are annoyed by the first half but the promising sign is how well the youths played. Notts needs a mix in the starting 11 and it will be much different when the team is playing a League Two side.

Today Notts looked like a first year senior team playing the oldest year.

I’m still struggling with who actually played it normally takes me half a dozen games before I start to recognise new players, I didn’t help not having their names on the back.

Can anyone tell me if Christian Dennis played? If he didn’t is he injured? Also I thought the Chinese player came on in the second half but the player I saw was quite short in stature and I’ve heard him described as big and strong.

Also the lad that I have been raving about for two years Remaye Campbell was the lad that came on with Kane Hemmings and played right up top, he turned their centre half for the penalty.

The team that started was

GK - Ross Fitzsimmons

LB - Dan Jones

CH - Shaun Brisley

CH - Ben Hall

RB - Matt Tootle

LW - Nathan Thomas

CM - Elliot Hewitt

CM - David Vaughan

RW - Enzio Boldewijn

AT - Jon Stead

AT - Lewis Allessandra

Then the team that finished the game was

GK - Max Culverwell

LB - Tyreece Kennedy-Williams

CH - Richard Duffy

CH - Pierce Bird

RB - Sam Osbourne

RW - Terry Hawkridge

CM - Noor Husin

CM - Tom Crawford

LW - Alex Howes

AT - Kane Hemmings

AT - Remaye Campbell

Although in the second half we changed to a 4-2-3-1 formation once all the subs had been made.

Hopefully now all can see the difference Richard Duffy makes to our team, we were a disorganised mess before he came on, class player whose work goes unnoticed most of the time, no surprise though that he is rated so highly by his peers

Come on they had £6 million Bradley Johnson, £1 million+ Richard Keogh, £2.5 million+ David Nugent,  European Championship semi finalist Joe Ledley, to name but a few, they were two games away from the premier league last year, and our fans are moaning??!!??

The game was all about being out of possession and next weeks will be to see how much of what they do this week to combat being out of possession will pay off so to speak.

At last someone gives my team a bit of credit for making Notts,a team 2 leagues lower, struggle for possession.Perhaps ,with all the new signings Notts have made and their quality, some fans were expecting Notts to just turn up and put one over  my championship side .These pre season games are meant to build up fitness and turn a collection of players into a team. @Northants Pie,you are quite right, next week versus Leicester should show how much of what Notts  do THIS coming week has paid off.

Next week I think will be a different kind of game that lessons will have been learned

You guys were class, it was quite clear that there were a few new tweaks that Lampard has made to how you move on set pieces, especially from back to front diagonals, what you guys were doing which caused us headache after headache and is something i first noticed Mourhino doing 10 years ago, it worked wonders for Chelsea and I can see it doing so for you guys also

I normally agree in the most part to what you post but after the first 10 minutes of wondering what the fork he was doing playing with lads who he was he was the only one on the wavelength of a very good Derby team and was let down badly by his team mates, it would of been nice to have seen him with Husin in the 4-2-3-1 formation we went for in the second half

Cloughie used to say that the opposition can't score if they haven't got the ball.If the ball is moved around inteligently and  accurately and the players also work hard  making passes possible then its very difficult for the opposition to do anything but chase shadows.

I did a subdued celebration yesterday for the first goal but out of respect for my hosts refrained for the other goals. Now if it had been over the river.......

Point taken @Northants Pie,  also agree that he could work better with Husin. Just concerned that we needed a ball winner in th Bishop / O'Connor mode but it's early days

@super_ram Howard Wilkinson said a similar thing at Notts...you have absolutely nothing to fear provided you keep hold of the ball

Did you go to the game?

Last season Kevin Nolan had a rant about how the players couldn't kick a ball, this friendly was worse than that game. I think people just wanted to see Notts play like they did in the second half which didn't lack effort at all.

We will have to see how Notts handles Leicester.

I did think the performance and tactics we used was poor at best even for a friendly. The second half squad should have started, they had a lot more fight even though it was all over by time they came on.

Yep I did go to the game, I'm sure the majority did want to a performance like the second half in the first but the Derby second half team didn't have anywhere near as much quality as the first half team did

I think he & Husin would work best in a 4-2-3-1 and your right we need a ball winner to be in the squad, Alex Howes can do that very well.

The Thomas lad doesn't like defending, hence why we moved Enzio over there after the drinks break

Enzio seemed lost.

It was like he had some sort of allergy to the derby players, because he never moved with the ball and although he did a fair bit of running - it was only ever delayed. He seemed to almost wait for the opposition to move, then he'd run and not do a single thing. I'd struggle to rate him higher than a 2 based on his performance.
