Notts reject bid from Chesterfield for Cal Roberts

Wow, didn't think I'd see them in for him.

Looks like we won't sell to a national league club anyway. I don't have an issue if Cal moves on and up at some point but the idea of strengthening a promotion rival just seems completely counter-intuitive.

And I just find the whole financial system at Chesterfield very odd, why do you have to crowdfund frost covers but then are able to go and bid for someone like Roberts (who will cost a hell of a lot more than 15k!)

What a weird thing bid to make and to make it public. Then again, their manager is up there with Stephen Cleeve on the weird/potential serial killer stakes, so what can you expect. 

Chesterfield are supporter funded I believe and apart from a big win on some insurance claims, some 'strategic' (borderline fraud) furloughing and probably a nice windfall from their FA Cup run, we're not talking about a team with millions to splash in the long term. Seems very much that's its **** or bust this season. 

I've taken a look at their fans forum and whilst I thought some wrexham fans were a bit deluded on their 'analysis' of our recent game, there must be some strong herb growing game going on over there in Chesterfield.

If the rumours are to be believed, Tshimanga is off to the Championship this January which will add to their transfer fund pot. I struggle to believe this as his goals have single-handedly won games for them this season and I think they would drop into the playoffs without him.

I think Roberts will bide his time till the summer and then move to a league club, there is no point moving to Chesterfield who play pretty much the same system that we do.

They had no intention of actually signing him - this is a transparently obvious attempt to unsettle a key player of a promotion rival. I hope it backfires on them big time.

What makes me laugh, is how, all of a sudden, Chesterfield fans believe they can afford to buy the league.

Suddenly this season, they've become more anxious than the majority of Hollywood fans that support little old Wrexham. Obviously, every club has fans like this, but they seem to have a special number who appropriately forgotten how dire they have been in previous seasons. If they believe they can afford any of our players, it's beyond me because no team at this level should sell their players to rivals unless they're not competing for promotion or safety.

I wished someone would look into how they're managing to handle their recruitment, considering they've gone from debt to incredibly skint, requiring handouts and furlong longing staff/players to offering silly money for players as a bid to get out the league.

I've read things that speculate Kabongo Tshimanga joined Chesterfield for £300k, any club that could afford this generally would be a solid signing, but I just think there's something underhanded going on. Why are they so desperate to sell a player who has been a major part in turning their fortunes around? It just doesn't make sense.

It is all very odd @Chris. I wouldn't be surprised if Tschimanga has a buy-out clause in this contract that is forcing Chesterfield into action. They might have spent 300k on him, but if they can double their money or more (while getting a sack full of goals) that's good business, and they'll have cash for the transfer market.

I doubt they really think they can sign Roberts, although they would if they got the chance. It's a cynical attempt at unsettling him, or even starting a bidding war.

True, it does make you wonder if Chesterfield are trying to unsettle Notts players.

I doubt Cal Roberts would even want to leave, Chesterfield are not that much of a step-up and, he's settled with us - helping to convince players like Kyle Cameron to sign for us.  I don't think the bid will unsettle anyone, or even be taken seriously.

Quite possible.

It seems short-minded of them to allow the buy-out to be activated in the first season (usually these come into play after 12 months), though, even if they double their money, Chesterfield will have to recruit well to find someone else to cover his amount of goals/performances. Signing a winger isn't going to do that.

If they manage to convince Notts to accept a bid and, Roberts agreed to join - I think we could make better use of the money.

Roberts, before his injury issues, would be a different story, but not so much this season. Still, I do think neither player will be going anywhere during this transfer window.

I believe Chesterfield got a "cash windfall" by having business disruption insurance, valid during the Covid disruption. Stands to be corrected.

They also didn't jump the queue to get COVID jabs, they claimed what was "spare" and, "would've gone to waste". I don't really buy the insurance claims myself.

It's these paragraphs from the Reedtz brothers' statement, the sources telling Notts Live he's not for sale to any National League club at any price and his mum saying on Facebook that he's never asked to leave the club, that make me hopeful we won't sell.

 

We surely wouldn't be that stupid to strengthen a fellow promotion rival. Not just these reasons, but his best mate is at the club too.

All seems very dodgy to say the least. Purely from a morale point of view - they seemed to have financially profited from the pandemic yet also took tax-payer money which helped fund lavish player signings. Wouldn't sit right with me.

Seems that Hearts are interested in Tshimanga. Took a look at both Chesterfield's and Heart's forums, seems both sets of fans are heavily invested into the rose-tinted glasses industry:

- Hearts seem to think they'll bag him for peanuts when reality is that Chessie paid 300k for him so aren't going to be letting him go for at least double that.
- Chessie seem to think that despite flirting with the NLN the past couple of seasons, they are now a bigger club than Hearts and offer a better standard than the SPL.

The reality is though, if Hearts stump up enough money (admittedly I have no idea about their financial situation), the SPL is a big enough pull for anyone currently playing in the conference, especially given Hearts are probably the 3rd/4th biggest club in Scotland. People will point at clubs like Ross County with the smaller attendances, but where would you rather play, there or against the King's Lynns and Dovers of the world?

I would say, his value would be worth more than most teams in the Scottish Premier League usually spend on an unproven player.

I don’t think Tshimanga will go anywhere he’s too important for them, Chesterfield have spent big and gambled on getting promoted this season. If by the end of the season they haven’t been promoted I can see him moving on.

I think Chesterfield are just trying to put eyes on other teams assets, I don't think they will or would want to sell Kabongo Tshimanga.

If they gain promotion I think they will try to encourage him to stay on for that season, see how he does and then sell on the the highest bidder. It wouldn't surprise me if in his contract there's a percentage clause for Boreham Wood.

Cal Roberts isn't going to any National League team any time soon, it looks like a game on their part.

I might be the only one who thinks losing Cal Roberts wouldn't be that harmful, I actually think performances improved when he was side lined. Less emphasis on his position or creativity which hasn't quite been to his standard this season. No surprise either that his performances have lifted after this news but realistically he isn't going anywhere. 

There is also no way, Notts would sell a player to a team in the same situation as us.

Hopefully his performances continue to impress, when he is in form it does benefit the club.

Cal Roberts is a class footballer and exceptional winger. I think he benefits more from playing wide in a 4-3-3 than he does playing more centrally in our usual 3-5-2. He's not a wing-back either. 

Also have to remember that he was out for a full season. It takes a bit of time to come back from that and start reaching the standards before the injury. The signs have been there and he looks to be starting to head back to those levels, which is fantastic news for Notts and terrible news for NL defences.
