Should Notts consider having a new Club Captain?

Matt Palmer has had the Club Captain's role for over a year now.

Should the Club consider changing the Club Captain. Are you happy with Matt Palmer as Captain or do we need a fresh face to lead the team on the pitch?

What do you think a Club Captain's attributes should be?

Yes I think Martin will appoint a different captain, I think Matt is too quiet, it needs to be someone who leads from the front, is inspirational and is forcefully communicative not only with his team mates but with the ref.

Agree. And choice of captain is a Head Coach thing, surely...part of team selection? Although they're bound to go over it collectively as well

Platty has been up front recently on the kit and the MC podcast, is first team regular and looks like a top choice to me.

Also, relieving the responsibility from Matty Palmer might allow him to focus on his game and rediscover a bit more adventure. And if some passes don't come off at least he won't have put the ball at risk as captain. So making the change might help out in many different ways.

I do think the need for a captain is somewhat overvauled in modern day football. Footballers have become less volitile and more PR/media trained to shy away the main characteristics we'd be looking in for in a captain. That said, I do think Palmer isn't the choice, he's quite the middle man for everything. He's not really our most creative player, he's not our main output for defense or attack nor is he ever seen to be involved talking to other players. Given the amount of attention media give players like Bedaeu or Platt and attitudes are more linked to what we want in a captain, it should be on one of those two.

Agree with the above, the captain should be vocal and always talking to and encouraging his teammates. He should be the manager's voice on the pitch. Perhaps Platt, Bedeau or Norwood would be more suitable.

In recent years it's become almost a ceremonial role, so that naming a new captain is effectively a demotion for the previous one. I don't think that's what it should be. It should be an extra task for a senior player, not some kind of gong.

Notts hardly ever picks someone who’s new to the club, so I wouldn’t expect Ollie Norburn to be chosen. I think Jacob Bedeau is the better option compared to Matty Platt. Bedeau talks more on the pitch and plays at a higher level. This is one more reason why we’ll miss David McGoldrick, he would have been the clear choice for the role. As for Matt Palmer, this could help him concentrate on his own game and take away some of the pressure that certain fans keep putting on him.

I think the captain should be a real leader. Not just on the pitch, but in the dressing room. Someone who can encourage, motivate and has real personality. Someone who can take individual players to one side and inspire them. Not sure if Matt Palmer fits that criteria. Maybe one will emerge before the start of the season

The captain needs to be a leader. You can lead by example, or lead verbally, ideally both. Not sure that's Matty. When he came back from injury we all thought it would be as good as a new signing. I'm not sure if it's the injury, or playing at a higher level, or the way the team has been set up, but it's not been as we hoped.

For me, a good club captain is a person who can command respect from his teammates, He will be a person who can inspire, motivate & unite his team & have an assertive personality.

This person should have strong leadership skills, should have a positive attitude & be able to make good decisions under pressure.

This person should have a good work ethic, excellent organisational skills & should be a good role model both on & off the field of play

This person doesn't have to be necessarily the best player in the side but he needs to be someone who has been at the club for a few seasons at least & knows the club inside out.

I do like Matt Palmer as a player & he does have many of the attributes I have described, however I don't think he is assertive enough as a football Captain. I also think his form has suffered to this he took on the role.

I think Martin should choose his own Club Captain. I agree with some members that Matty Platt or Jacob Bedeau would be a good choice.

For me the best candidate for Club Captain left the Club, David McGoldrick, who had the most of, if not all the attributes I mentioned.

As Club Captain he would have got a pay rise anyway, so I will never fathom why both parties couldn't have come to an agreement.

Someone like Jodi Jones might be a good choice, but he’s a bit quiet at times and still dealing with injuries. He would’ve been a strong candidate before breaking his leg. I don’t think Matt Palmer’s done anything wrong, but there are louder voices in the squad, which is why I reckon Jacob Bedeau would be the best option.

i think looking at the squad these are our options based on being here for some time, which is why i think matt palmer is the clubs choice.

curtis edwards is quieter than matt palmer, and he has not been the same since he got injured. i know people say this about palmer but you can still see him being very important to the first team. whereas edwards looks at least to me a squad player who is capable of stepping up further when hes in form.

obvious candidates

matty platt, jacob bedeau, conor grant, jodi jones, alassana jatta, [matt palmer]

provided we can keep him and get more from him, i think lewis macari could be a good call in the future, i would say the same about scott robertson but paring him as a starting 11 looks unlikely and i do think macari has the most potential.

I think Matt Palmer’s injury last season had more of an effect on his form than being captain. It’s hard to play your best when you’re not fully fit. He’s a quality player, and hopefully we’ll see him get back to his best this season. His ability can make a big difference when he’s firing on all cylinders.

That said, I do agree that a stronger captain could be found. It’s a role that needs the right kind of leadership, and maybe someone else is better suited to it right now.

I’ve got a feeling, even though most people don’t agree, that Matt Palmer will stay as captain. He has my full backing, but if someone else takes the role, I’ll support them too. Jacob Bedeau looks like the clear next option to me.

First of all the Club Captain has to be the conduit between management and players. Have both understanding and appreciation of what is required in that position. Be firm and assertive on and off the pitch, being respected, approachable and having a likeable personality. I think Matty Palmer after that unfortunate injury has suffered with finding his mojo again, he's not vocal enough before, during or after a match and concentrating on his match craft to me would benefit him tenfold. I think Jacob Bedeau is the ideal candidate, he has all the qualities needed to make an excellent Captain. He seems to me to be a natural leader so why not give him the chance.

Other than Platt, Bedeau or JJ who else is likely to start every match? Right now those 3 for me are the only other serious candidates.

I don’t really have an issue with Palmer being captain right now. Before he joined us in the National League he already had played over 200 matches in the EFL, he’s a lot more experienced than I realised and besides the freak ACL injury he never seems to be injured. I'm not sure the scream and shout approach is as effective these days either, I do think Matt is a tad quieter but when he speaks if what he says is useful and right that is of more value than someone shouting with little substance.

I know that Norburn has been a captain at most of his previous clubs but will he be fit enough to start the season as our first-choice CM? It could well be that halfway through the season Robertson and Norburn are our starting midfielders, then we might have a problem.

Difficult situation to resolve. Palmer was certainly the “favoured” option for Maynard and he is a respected member of the squad.

I don’t know if he fits the “Paterson mould” in respect of playing style and approach. Will he be a regular starter? I’m not sure he is incisive or creative enough tbh. I prefer the more robust, assertive style of leader - Turner was an inspirational captain and he possessed a bit more character & personality for my money.

Of the established players I’d have thought Bedeau would be ideal but McDonald also has tge right attributes, should he be a preferred first team candidate.

I like Matt Palmer and I don’t think he’s a poor captain, but there’s always a chance someone else might bring more out of the team. I’d give it to Ollie Norburn. He’s got good experience and I don’t mind that he’s new. The club spoke highly of him, saying he’s a leader who wants to win, similar to the praise Martin Paterson got when he arrived. Letting Palmer get on with his game while handing the armband to someone like Norburn might be a smart call.
