Anglo Italian Cup

Would you like to see a return of the Anglo Italian Cup? If the Football League looked to restart the competition would you support it?

For me I'd welcome it back provided it was profitable for all teams or at least it covered the flight fee's between away games. I would be more open to this returning, than I would see something like the JPT continuing. I know some fans will be against the idea, you know the build up in fixtures or it's more hassle than it would be worth but I am curious to know regardless.

Have your say..

It depends on what teams are included and how its structured. I always liked it, it was dwindling with interest towards the end.

I'd be up for it but with the amount of games team already have to play one of the cup competitions would have to be sidelined.

They could do it by drawing teams out of a hat and those teams are not entered into that seasons JPT.

Why not have a champions league style tournament with teams from the major european leagues entered via the same manner with say 3 from each country, this way one could be drawn from the 3 divisions directly below each countries top league with the only exclusions being that 1) you were picked previously thus (for us anyway) unless your relegated out of the league completely you will be guaranteed entry at one point, 2) teams that have just dropped out of the premiership cannot be entered until their parachute payments stop thus leveling the playing field a little for championship teams that have no realistic chance of getting into the premier league Β

I was going to say it originally but assumed some would call it an odd decision.

Perhaps the JPT could be rebranded? Allowing for those who progress to ex round to be included into the Anglp Italian cup? It would make the JPT more exciting in my opinion and perhaps it would even make clubs take it more seriously. I know this would mean extra games for those who have made those rounds but it could be good things like experience.

Especially if they enforced x amount of players beneath the age of 21 or 24, perhaps even home grown players.

Though this would complex things, still I would love to see it return.

All thats needed now is for UEFA to be convinced! (or whoever the governing body is/would be!)

Good competition at the time and did us lots of favours and memorable trips to the twin towers, but would it get off the ground now? Dont think so.

I don't think we need another cup competition which would probably stimulate no interest especially in the early rounds.

They could replace/rebrand JPT as @notts-joe says but there isn't room for the two competitions.

People seem to be fogetting that the Anglo-Italian Cup was for second level teams in England and Italy, so it wouldn't affect the Paint Pot Trophy and as things stand we wouldn't be eligible to participate anyway. In the latter stages at least I think it's a genuinely interesting competition, but I seem to remember that many of the gates were miserable and that was probably why it was scrapped.

Realistically I don't think you could open up the competition to teams any lower down, I believe standards in the Italian lower leagues are much lower than ours and many third-level teams there are part-time, so they wouldn't stand much of a chance against League 1 clubs.

yes, I never saw it the last time round. why did they stop it? anyone know?

According to Wikipedia:

Β

"The competition was abandoned in 1996 because the two leagues could not agree on dates for fixtures,Β and due to increasing violence at matches."

I actually preferred the old Anglo - Scottish cup. Now if there was enough interest in that it could be worth re-igniting. The old round-robin group games could be part of the pre-season. I don't think it will ever see light of day again but if we binned the JPT and the SPFL binned the Ramsdens/Alba or whoever else sponsors it cup there could be some mileage in it. The English clubs could even let the Scottish clubs have home adavantage in the round robin stages to try and generate extra money for their smaller clubs.
