The Stadium of Light's name is actually embarrasing. Benfica's ground was named after the Luz suburb, which translates as "Light" and is based on the Church of Our Lady of the Light in Lisbon. The name has nothing whatsoever to do with Sunderland!

Valley Parade, its wrong on all levels.

When people ask what 'American Pie' is about, they're missing the point. The song isn't about the lines themselves - it's about what is between the lines. The song is about what isn't there.

Come to think of it, Meadow Lane isn't in a meadow. If you're naming it after a suburb it should really be Meadows Lane.

Bearing in mind that our ground is (was?) officially called the County Ground, the City Ground is actually in the county and the County Ground is in the city.

Alfreton Town - Impact Arena seems an impossibly grand name for a tin shed.

Watch it ,son, but I agree I preferred Pride Park.

When I was a lad I used to go to the baseball ground with a mate and his dad, seem to take age's on the bus from Beeston.....and I'm talking about in the days of Reg Matthews and Tommy Powell....Could never understand why it was called the baseball ground any idea super_ram ?

You'll also remember Jack Parry,Geoff Barrowcliffe etc.

I've explained the Baseball Ground story previously but I'm more than happy to do it again.

In 1874 Francis Ley established Ley's Malleable Castings on Osmaston Road,Derby.By the 1880's he was rebuilding on a larger scale and included expensive recreational facilities for his employees. .                                                                                                                             On returning from a trip to the United States he introduced Baseball to Britain.Derby County legend,Steve Bloomer, played at second base for the Derby Baseball team.                                                                                                                                                                                              Derby County was formed in 1884 as an off shoot of Derbyshire County Cricket Club and played their early home games on the Derby Cricket ground which was also in the middle of a racecourse. The Rams fixtures often clashed with other sporting events(much like Notts  and Nottinghamshire criicket at Trent Bridge) so in1895 Derby County moved permanently to Ley's Baseball Ground..It wasn't until 1924 that Derby County purchased the ground from (now) Sir Francis Ley for £10,000..

In March 1953 Notts County were the visitors for the official switching on of the new floodlights(Sorry Rams won 3 - 0)

By 1969 the capacity had increased to a Rams home record of 41,826 ,which I attended ,when Spurs were beaten 5 - 0.

By  late 1995 and after various safety laws had been implemented the capacity was down to 17,451.

The last league fixture was against Arsenal in the Premier League in 1997-Rams lost 3 - 0-though reserve games were still played for a few years.

The Rams relocated to Pride Park(Now The I-pro Stadium) after this game and The Baseball Ground was finally demolished  in late 2003 to be replaced with 150 new homes.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            In 2010 a commemorative statue was unveiled on the site.

SO MANY MEMORIES!

Accrington Stanley have changed their Crown Ground name to the WHAM Stadium fgs.

Surely Meadow Lane is named after the road the club offices are on?

Dagenham has got to take the biscuit though. The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham Stadium. Someone must be having a laugh there!

@jsrjay you probably shouldn't have mentioned that! Super got you good lol
