Feedback Memories of Meadow Lane

When I made my way down to Meadow Lane to catch the coach to Stevenage, I had memories come back of travelling to games with Grandfather. It made me realise the little things in and around the ground which has changed, you know the things people often take for granted but to you they mean something.

Sadly, I don't recall the alternations or the old ground.

I am wondering if community members are open to sharing some of their memories of Meadow Lane?

I'll add mine later on.

I used to sit in the Sirrel stand Joe, you may get this from others but everyone knew each other. Back then I went to games with my aunt, uncle, mother, cousins and grandparents.

It was the same for other people, that is where people who used to be family oriented sat.

One game when the sun was shinning down, I recall us a game, I think it was between us and Ipswich but it was one of the most entertaining games I have watched.

i remember when i first went to meadow lane like it was yesterday, i was instantly hooked. i was not very much interested in football, i barely ever watched it on tv but i had been given some free tickets from my school and a small group of went down. my dad actually came with me, he supports forest and hes a little negative about us times but even he had a good time.

As a boy I used to stand on the County Road side, it wasn't called the the Sirrell Stand then obviously, it was open terrace at the front and then an old wooden stand at the back, no seats just covered standing area.

I remember to show disapproval if Notts weren't playing well the fans would start a slow handclap which would gradually rise in crescendo with feet stamping on the wooden floor in unison, it made a hell of a racket.

As a teenager I used to stand on the kop but in those days you could walk from one goal to another and I used to go to the goal which Notts were attacking to see the goal action.

In later years when I met Mrs H she used to come with me and we stood behind the Meadow Lane goal.

Not sure how you quote! Tonyhately: I'd heard from my Dad how if Notts weren't playing well the crowd would start the slow hand claps, sounds more effective than just jeering or booing!

Yes it was quite a regular thing in those days and as you say very effective for showing the fans disgust.

One cold and very wet night match, the County Road fans were giving Bob Worthington, the Notts left back a really hard time.  

I can only guess  that the cold wind, driving rain waterlogged pitch and abuse from his own fans, made him very angry, 

He swung his left boot and kicked the ball so hard that the keeper never moved as it smashed into the net from what now must be 45 yards. It was the only time he scored for Notts, a real gem

Bob jogged back to his full back position in front of he fans who had been calling him and turned his back on them

He then bent forward dropped his shorts and "mooned" the barrackers.

Some goal celebration, but they wouldn't let me do it at school.

one of my Meadow Lane memories is standing on the Kop, snow banked high around the edge of the pitch, and beating Peterborough 6-0. You Pies.

Sitting on the Brick fence in the Family Stand getting told off from the Stewards,  for having My legs over the Pitch side. Once he left i put them back

My first memories would be around the '75 time... I was on a terracing in the corner near the cattle market... I assume this would be the away end although that bit is cloudy... I was obviously dragged to see that lot play us... the game ended in a draw, and why do I keep thinking that David Needham scored for us... I have no idea.

 

Thankfully the folly of accompanying ones father to matches was to come to an abrupt end.... All in good time Grasshoppers all in good time... Oh yeah, I had to watch them too

The slow clapping was amusing as a lad, fun to join in with. I do not know why todays lot only tend to discourage when performances are low or why certain players end up being targeted.
