We are lucky enough not have had cause to use the NHS much at all but a recent experience has really impressed us.

Last week Mrs. H. phoned for an appointment at the doctors because she was worried about something, she got an appointment the same day with a lady doctor, the doctor was concerned enough to get her a fast track appointment to see a specialist. When she got home from the doctors that afternoon she received a phone call from the hospital to say that she had an appointment yesterday just a week after her initial phone call.

As you can imagine we spent a week worrying about the outcome especially as the doctor and hospital were so keen to get her looked at, we went yesterday and she spent two hours being poked and prodded and having lots of tests but thankfully they gave her the all clear and said everything was ok. What a fantastic service, just one week from the initial phone call to the doctors to seeing a specialist in the hospital.

Thank God for the NHS I am pretty sure you wouldn't get that level of service free anywhere else in the world.

It's the opposite over here in Ireland. You have to have private health insurance to get seen quickly, otherwise it's A & E and a trolley in a hallway for days on end if you are lucky. The service once you are in is top notch but it's a nightmare waiting to get in.

There's many things wrong with the NHS, not least its cost, but I wouldn't swap it for any other country's system that I've been to except possibly Cuba. I've had excellent treatment on many occasions here.

Won't get political here ( ok only a little bit. Thank you Labour !!)
Glad Mrs H is well and I agree, with having a disabled child, we regularly attend hospital appointments with Ben, and although we all have our preferences hospital wise, the service is a good safety net.
Can't knock the concept of the NHS ( then again it probably wouldn't be politically savvy for me to do that anyway!) But occasionally the odd doc isn't great, but that's down to them, not the NHS.

The nhs is generally good, as others have said... you get the odd doctor/specialist that isn't good but thats not the nhs's fault. It takes awhile to get an appointment at the doctors nowadays but alot of good doctors are retiring and being replaced with not so caring ones. I think the problems with waiting times for appointments is due to the amount of paperwork they also have to do along with seeing patients. You can get emergency appointments after normal surgery hours but they are always limited.

I can't really comment on the NHS as never had a accident or so on what does scare me tho is how some doctors and people in Care homes don't give elderly people good treatment.

I absolutely hate people who don't treat elderly people with care and respect in care homes makes me want to break there necks.

I think every elderly person should be respected and treated as a human being as I have worked in a care home and I've seen how people are with them they shout at them.

And I didn't like it

I had major surgery in the Nottingham City a few years ago, and it was fantastic, couldn't have been better. I even liked the food!!!

Always thankful for the NHS, when I've had to visit, usually related to dislocating my knees - they've always been nice and supportive. When Ava was rushed into hospital when she was little, after having a form of fit which made her very sleepy (I forget the term) - they allowed me to stay over and be by her side. Obviously, due to myself and Cheeky having lost one daughter already - they understand how I felt as a father.

They treated us with the utmost care and respect.

Considering usually they do not allow couples to stay together, I felt very privileged.

During my walks from work, I was felt thankful that I could be by Ava's side because I feared the worst. Yet it turned out to be very common for some babies who over heat.

I'm with you all. Thankfully we have the NHS over here in Canada.

Wouldn't change it for the world. With all the stories coming from down south (America) you Never Ever Take it for Granted.

Yeah the good old NHS, they had no record of my mums weight loss/gain during her lengthly time with them!!! Considering she was admitted for extreme weight loss I was absolutely shocked that they had to look through a nurses notebook to see when she had writen it down. Very rarely it would seem!!! FFS this is the 21st Century not Victorian age!!! Then they f***ed up a hip opperation that now means she is wheelchair bound!!! Yeah thank god for the NHS they'll be hearing from my lawyer ;)

Rant over....

I'm sorry to hear your mum had a bad experience with the NHS @[member="OP67"] its bound to make you cynical, you do occasionally hear of these things but hopefully they are in the minority.

I still think it's the best in the world but I am sure improvements can always be made.

I hope your mum makes a recovery.
