bizarre....

i thought smith did well at walsall but with brentford he just seemed average. i dont see how he can help the manager gain promotion or even establish them as a premier league team. john terry seems a gamble.

I guess they hope he will be like Frank Lampard but I just fail to see how John Terry can do well.

Imagine his signings all fearing bringing their partners to the club when he has a reputation for doing all the wrong things, I think he could be a good coach but as a manager I think Terry will struggle.

I feel its a poor decision TBH.

They needed someone with experience, Steve Bruce could have turned things around and I think the issues are coming from the top. John Terry seems the wrong decision but Dean Smith offers him some experience. Terry as the assistant does give him some learning time.

Would have loved Dean Smith at Notts when he was at Walsall... built some great teams on little budget. I applaud Villa for making a sensible choice..If Terry can sort the defensive coaching out, then it seems to be a good fit

I think it's not the greatest move personally, I agree that experience is needed and Dean Smith isn't that 'great'. People say Villa would give John Terry more knowing Smith is behind him but I don't see it.

Villa needed someone well drilled and I do feel the new owner doesn't have the cash to really push the club.

There was talk about them being docked points at the start of the season due to debts, their owner supposedly had enough money to bankroll his club for 5 years - so if this is all true I don't see why they are struggling. Steve Bruce would have fixed them, I don't personally like him all that much but he can build squads capable of gaining promotion from the Championship and he does alright in the Premier League.

For me, the appointment of Terry seems to be a named decision and quite possibly to see if they can replicate what Lampard is doing at Derby.

Looking back on the recent PONCast about loyalty this is another situation where Dean Smithy has turned his back on a club on the UP and a club that has more issues off the pitch than on the pitch. He has the tools there to do a job but he built something at Brentford.

Can’t wait to see how this developes with johns first appointment and Deans cv not boasting big name teams. I wish them both well

I think John Terry will backfire and I am not sure he's even coach material myself but time will tell.
