Cliche football sayings

What football cliche sayings have you heard the most that annoy you? And why do they annoy you?

"What this game needs is a goal."

Talk about stating the obvious, if it's a dull game and neither team are playing well. It's natural that a goal would spark things, but commentators say it when sides are playing well too. That is just very frustrating to me.

There's a lot of them, I don't mind if it's said in a meaningful way. Journalists and those in the media have a tendency to class every big injuring for a returning player 'as a new signing'. There's better ways to express this, hence why it generally annoys me.

You're trained to avoid using certain phrases and words repeatedly, it's difficult. I used to feel irritated by some comments, but now I realise that words are spoken that quickly that these sayings are often the first things that come to mind. Some will naturally be said, issue is with those with poor communication or are just bad at punditry.

"If that was on target, it would have been a goal."

Sometimes true, more so an over hyped phrase to dismiss good players having an awful crack at goal.

This is going to be a long thread :D

"What Pele called 'the beautiful game...'"

"It's a game of two halves."

"At the end of the day, I took a shot and it went in."

"Rainy Tuesday night in Stoke"

"He has a motor that won’t quit."

"This lad just keeps on running."

The same phrase just reworded, often said throughout games and surely one of the most obvious comments to anyone interested in watching the game. I suppose, it's moderately acceptable for the radio mind.

"Plucky non-league underdogs"

"The magic of the cup"

"High dropping ball" - remember that one?

high dropping ball used to be said a lot in fifa games too, i think it might have been some sort of inside joke.

“You couldn’t write a script like this!”

There's no scripts in football.

Unless officials have taken a bung which goes against FIFA standards, or does it? 🤔

"It's like something out of Roy of the Rovers"

"Tricky winger"

"Big strong centre half"

"Never write off the Germans"
