Your position(s) in football?

This has been done awhile back, however, we have a lot of new members and I actually don't recall the last topic getting many responses.

Naturally some members won't have taken to playing football, however, if you played please do mention where you tended to get pushed towards playing and where you preferred.

When I first got into playing football, I wanted to be a goalkeeper.

I used to attempt to pull off all those TV camera style saves and, in games with friends I used to push myself not to concede any goals. I actually believe it was possibly my best position on a pitch, yet I couldn't take long goal kicks for the life of me. I dislocated my shoulder in year 11, having played in goal for my school's team in training and I actually didn't concede but that whole experience put me off.

When I tended to play for a team, I would be pushed at left or right back.

I wasn't the fastest player, but I could move the ball quickly and people considered me to be like Gazza in terms of skill. I loved being creative with how I took the ball around people, one of my favourite moves was replicating Gazza against Scotland in Euro 1996.

But, I could play anywhere.

Of course, I liked scoring goals and in my junior school team I had the chance to start 3 times up front and I hit the post from long distance once. In a 5-a-side contest played at Harvey Hadden I scored over 100 goals, dominantly playing in a midfield role and my schools team made the final. I got injured in the semi final, as two other lads wiped me out into a plastic divider and I picked up a concussion. Mr Smith, who did have the same nickname as Jim Smith [Bald Eagle] refused to let me play and I sat the final out.

I also liked playing in the centre of midfield, as I like being creative and I do enjoy setting the tempo with my passing.

What about you?

Left-side of midfield, I like attacking and having room to run at.

That's my favourite position to play, at school and after in a local team I played as a left/centre midfielder. I'm quite good at striking the odd lucky long distant drill into the top corner, a part from that it's more my pace which stands out.

Defender! I was not much of a footballer but I could tackle. I was a cross between Neil Ruddock and Vinny Jones in my Sunday league team.

I played Central midfield for Hull boys, which is where I was from originally, then Doncaster boys after we had moved and went on to play for South Yorkshire boys. Was on trial at Sheffield United when I had an accident at 17 which finished any playing career I may have had. This was all a long time ago when football was played for enjoyment, not for money. Today's game is not the same in my opinion, too many playing for biggest wage they can get, which club doesn't matter.

Defender many years ago, I couldn't play now for the life of me.

I enjoy playing football and happy to play anywhere, I'm the best in goal but I am confident at the same time.

Centre defence or midfield I am most happy.

I play as a goalkeeper but I like to play upfront sometimes

Played on the wing at first, then combined that with playing up front on a few occasions. Drifted into the centre of midfield now, making runs from deep but also still sticking to wide man duties.

Centre of midfield, I'm a grafter and battler.

I play for my Uni team in midfield.

I've always preferred playing on the wing but I am happy to play in the middle. At school I tended to be shoved in defence due to my height and I did okay but it wasn't the best place to put me.
