More of the 1970's for me.. Findus steak and kidney pancakes...crinkled chips... and although not shown, Findus chocolate or Strawberry mousse for dessert. Viennetta ice cream after Sunday roast too

My childhood was in the 50s and early 60s so there was very little if any ready meal type foods, everything was home cooked by my mam. Home made chips fried in lard in a chip pan, home made pies etc.

Chicken was a luxury which we had on Christmas Day.

Neck of mutton stew was a staple cheap meal but smelt foul when cooking. On Sunday we had a roast, normally lamb the cheap shoulder blade end roasted with mint sauce, mash and cabbage. Dad would get up early to put a rice pudding in the oven which was slow cooked and had a lovely brown skin on the top.

was it findus who were using horse meat for their microwavable lasagnes almost 10 years ago? that would be grim for some younger people to look back on.

my mum has always made food from ingredients because she does not like instant food. even fish fingers tended to be home made, but at times birds eye might be something i would see from time to time. its why i have a fondness for cooking at home, although i am no chef. i do like to make some of her more basic recipes. my childhood favourite was warm oats for breakfast and meat dinners.

My childhood memories that I look back with fondness is of the 60s & early 70s & my Mum's cooking. 

She made her own jams, strawberry, Raspberry & Marmalade. 

She could cook all kinds of Cakes, Pies, even bonfire toffee & regular toffee. She would make her own mince to go in her mince pies.

The mince pies you can buy just don't compare.

It's just a pity she never wrote down her recipes.

Spaghetti Bolognese is one of my earliest memories. I could be quite fussy, but my mum is an excellent cook, and a lot of the food we had, from casseroles to shepherd's pie, are things I used to look forward to. One of my all-time favourite simple meals was cheese, beans and potato, three of the best ingredients to make a meal from.
 

Oh oh oh ohhhhh, everywhere where we go, watching super County putting on a show!

When I first got married if we had spaghetti bolognaise it was a posh meal for a celebration, it seemed very cosmopolitan at the time, now it’s something kids eat.

I think it’s a real shame that people these days don’t do so much home cooking, a lot of the younger generation don’t even know how to cook, it’s either takeaways, fast food restaurants or ready meals. A lot of which is quite unhealthy.

I can remember my mum's Spaghetti Bolognese I think that was a staple of the 90s&00s. She used to finely chop carrots and peppers in hers to add more veg without me noticing! Sheppard's/Cottage pies too, again with the added finely chopped veg tactic.

Sausage and mash was probably my favourite meal though, with proper thick gravy. Chicken Kiev's felt like another food of that time period, I haven't had one for about 10 years now!

@CliftonMagpie, when my younger sister started cookery lessons at secondary school I was the guinea pig who tested her culinary efforts. When I came home from work her latest effort would be presented to me to taste and comment on. .Potatoes, cheese and beans was one of her outstanding successes .I still make it myself occasionally.

Most meals from when I was younger were made with noodles, rice, and pasta. There’s some Italian influence in my family, so I’ve had my fair share of spaghetti. I really love jacket potatoes; I prefer simpler food.

There is one food that my mother bought that I hated. I only tried it once. Maybe the older members will remember it.

The food is called Tripe or Stomach from a Ox or Calf but sometimes from Sheep or Pig.

I never liked the taste but it was supposed to be full of vitamins & protein.

@Robbie my mum occasionally had tripe and onions but she never subjected us kids to it thankfully.

i believe its making a comeback I’ve seen it in Morrisons occasionally and on cooking shows. It’s not something I’d want to try. :panic:

When I didn't feel well as a child, Granny Pie would make me Ready Brek. I preferred baby oats, and she knew exactly how to make it right every time. I have found memories of having meals like potato, cheese and beans. Also, @super_ram would make me pasty shaped pies, with guess what in them? Cheese cubes, diced boiled potato and beans. Topped off with gravy when cooked. I haven't made them myself for a while, the last time I did - one of my children kept pinching them. I think it was @Dash_16k. I grew up quite the fussy eater, so I would mostly have the same things, but those are two of my fondest memories.

To be perfectly honest, I preferred baking with GP. Birthdays, Christmas. The treats she would make were lovely, and there's no surprise I tended to focus on those more than actual meals. ????
