Back to the Future: The Notts time continuum

So, as I recently just watched the musical of Back to the Future for the 2nd time, I'll post on here, what I posted on Twitter.

Notts fans. What time and date would you travel back in time to, in order to change a piece of Notts' history that would change who we are now? Whether it's a signing, result or something else that altered our club's course.

before the trews bought notts, i would make sure i had proof to show the reedtz just how much good they did and just how them buying notts at this point after munto collapsed could see them push on further with their data and restructuring. i honestly feel we would be a championship team if this was the case.

I'd go back to the 70s and lock Brian Clough and Peter Taylor in a cupboard until the red lot appointed someone else as manager. We were level pegging with Florist on and off the pitch until that time, but with their success under Clough they pulled far ahead of us and the fans followed them over the bridge. When we finally did reach the top flight, we got smaller crowds than we had been getting in the third division pre-Clough. He transformed the fortunes of both clubs to the extent that they don't even see us as rivals any more.

Just imagine being able to change all that through just a bit of kidnapping (and time travel). Promotion into the top flight might even have taken us a division above them, and the bigger crowds we'd have got might have kept us there, possibly into the Premier League era.

1992 would be a good point, and I would try to advise Derek Pavis on upcoming players and make sure that we backed Neil Warnock all the way. Rather than selling our best players, the investment in young talent we know could easily make us thrive and rebuild from the ground up from that success.

Whilst it might be impossible for us to snap up the likes of Alan Shearer, Ian Wright, or even Les Ferdinand.

We know enough about the path that some in our price range could have, and no doubt retaining some of our own future stars that went on to bigger and better things. It might mean we didn't win the Anglo-Italian Cup, which I watched as a young kid, but players like Phil Turner, I believe, would have thrived in our team built around young Premier League talent. We might have won the FA Cup for the second time.

A field where dreams become reality.

I wouldn’t change anything. I’d just love to see Jimmy Sirrel lead Notts into the old First Division. That would be a moment worth watching again. Even the early 90s would be a great time to go back to. There was something special about football then, and Notts were holding their own.

The only real success I’ve seen is the 2009 League Two win and our National League Play-Off victory. Getting back into the EFL was a huge moment.

I’d go back to 1983 when we had Glen Roeder on loan. I remember making a contribution to the collection to help the club sign him on permanent basis. Sadly we couldn’t raise the funds. I’m sure he would have made a massive difference to fortunes going forward. He was different class as a center back. I just wonder what could have been!

Wasn't he great when he was at Notts for those four appearances? I'm sure he would have made a big difference if we could have bought him. I contributed to the fund myself. It was a pity that we couldn't meet the asking price. I think he could have saved us from relegation that season. It's sad that he's no longer with us. Football misses him.

Absolutely agree. What might have been eh?

Other than say going back to lock Alan Hardy in some sort of room so he couldn't complete a deal to buy the club... I’d go back to the pre-season match when Jimmy Spencer got injured. That damaged that season more than we realised and I think his career goes the other way if it doesn't happen. I’d imagine I would just appear on the touch line dressed in white like an angel, I’d catch the attention of Jimmy and warn him of a career damaging injury that is going to occur if he plays…

In a similar vein, there are millions of sliding door moments, but the one I'd go for is ensuring that we had Zeli Ismail and Michael Petrasso available for the whole of the 14/15 season. Both had incredible impact from their loans and I think if we had them both available throughout the season, we wouldn't have been relegated from League 1. A notable mention would have been having a season with Mason Bennett when we had him on loan and seeing where we would have ended up.

before he signed the deal, time cops come bursting in to remove him from the table. we just need to time loop the reedtz to show in his place. 😛

I would go back to 13th February 1994, to the minute before Sir Charlie Palmer scored against Forest with four minutes to go, ninety seconds after they'd equalised. Then just as the celebrations were slowing down, I'd have that moment put into a loop that repeated again and again for eternity.

  • 2 weeks later...

So many sliding door moments over the years

1) When Raddy Avramovic returned from North America, only to be told by Sirrel that he couldn't re sign him as there was no budget with Seamus McDonagh having being signed as our #1 goalkeeper.

2) Glenn Roeder.. I still believe to this day, the supporters had raised their half of the monies... Jack Dunnett pocketing my £15 ( doesnt sound much now but £15 was a lot to me back then)

3) Gazza not receiving a red card in the FA Cup at Spurs #JusticeForHarding

4) Signing Tony Hack-worthless on a 5 year contract

5) Agana or Deane... Mick Jones, Warnock's assistant, told me the choice was presented to Pavis, as it was "his money". Agana's fee, a write off.

6) Failing to sign Ian Taylor, then of Moor Green Rovers, He played for Notts in a friendly ( I was there), only then to be signed by Port Vale..then Villa..the rest is history.

7) Releasing Darren Huckerby from the youth team

8) Allegedly Sirrel tried to sign Ruud Gullit from HFC Haarlem but Dunnett turned down the chance to fund the transfer

9) Big Sam "keys under the door"... Bolton subsequently fined for poaching but no compensation was ever paid to #Notts

10) Phil Robinson bringing Stan Collymore over for training from Stafford. Warnock not impressed as Stan just goal hanged in a practice match allegedly.

11) Poor managerial appointments Larry Lloyd, Howard Kendall, Kiwomya, Fullarton

12) Injury prone signings Dave Robinson, £425k Peterborough to #Notts in 1992. Only played 3 times. Honourable mentions for the likes of Danny Haynes

13) Not being able to sign Matt Richie whilst on loan

14) Munto fiasco.. OK we came out of it and survived but the lack of due diligence nearly cost us our club's existence

15) Missed signing Warren Barton who was outstanding against Notts whilst playing for Maidstone

16) Selling players perhaps below their true value at the time? : McSwegan, Yates, Needham, Masson, Busby, Barnes...edit Steve Finnan to Fulham especially

Good point @theAnticlough I was there at that game

17) substituting Iain McCulloch, before Gary Bailey breaks his leg

18) Aidy Thorpe being injured at the Goldstone Ground

19) Dijkstra's own goal at the Baseball Ground

20) Coventry City play off match #JusticeForMattTootle

If I knew what was going to happen, I’d go back a few years before 1997 and invest in stocks and businesses that would make me wealthy. Once I had the money, I’d buy Notts County and keep putting funds into the club to help it grow.

I’d make sure the chairman was someone who truly understands the club and its history. I might even ask Les Bradd to take on a role where he oversees things, helping guide the club in the right direction. I’d want the staff to be set up in a way that matches how modern football works, even before it became the norm. Planning ahead like that could give the club a real advantage.

My aim would be to follow a path like Fulham’s, rising from the third tier all the way to the Premier League. But I think it’s vital that the club keeps hold of people who feel a strong connection to it. That sense of identity matters just as much as success.

Yes that would be my destination in a Time Machine, 19th April 1994, I’d stand behind Mick Walker in the dugout and shout to him to sub Dijkstra for Johnson before he could head into his own goal over Cherry’s head, making the result 1-1 when we were comfortable with seconds left in the game.

The result saw Derby get in the playoffs instead of us. If we’d got in the playoffs who knows what might of happened F*rest were promoted automatically we could have joined them in the top tier.

@Fan of Big Tone I was living and working in Stockport at the time. It was a long journey back, a game we should have won

21) Mick Waitt's flick on for David Hunt to score v Spurs ,ref unbelievably gave a foul against Mick. Pre match headline in The Sun ( Waitt-watching) 🙃
