YES WELL DONE DERBY COUNTY Like to think my Dear Old Dad was looking down at the Lads who have taken the RAMS BACK TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP.

Celebrate this Great Occasion super_ram Notts Fans celebrated last season Now it's your turn. If you drink have one for me!

Thank you  @Wheelbarrow repair man.I'm certainly savouring the moment. My wish now is for my first team to consolidate their place in the Championship .Secondly I hope Stuart Maynard gets the backing of the Notts fans and the owners and manages to sort out the Notts frailties. It would be very nice if I could join in celebrating a Notts County promotion this time next year.Good luck.

i am pleased for derby, they deserved to go up and its just a shame that portsmouth was just so good this season because it could have been a interesting title race between both teams. derby did well to get back up after dropping off a bit but it is always nice see a good team doing well.

    congratulations @super_ram.

So we now know the retained list, those players that Notts will be keeping, but I wonder what the plans will be for every individual on that retained list.

Will all of those players be in the running to be considered for the first team squad or will some of those players be loaned out or even sold?

We know the players that have been retained and will have their names already on the shortlist to be in the team.

I believe those players could be :-

Langstaff, Jones, Crowley, Nemane, Palmer, Robertson, Macari, Jatta, +1 new goalie, & 2 new defenders

Subs from, Bajrami, Sanderson, Mahovo, Austin, Brooks, Cameron, & Scott/ McGoldrick

Then additionally there is Chicksen, Slocombe, Morias, Stone, Rawlinson & Randall.

Three are available for transfer, if they are not transferred, will they be loaned out or not. Will Morias, Chicksen or Slocombe be loaned out or sold or kept as squad players?

Of course, this is all dependent on whether we retain, Langstaff, Jones and Crowley.

Listening to the forum tonight. A question was asked about any offers for our players and the answer was no there hadn't been

I would have liked to have heard a definitive they are not for sale answer which didn't happen.

If the players are being allowed to go if the right offer comes, I would much rather things be settled quickly rather than letting things drag on, then having to look for replacements close to the start of the next season.

I only see Cameron & Chicksen as squad players and not first choices for the first team.

I think Slocombe & Morias could do a job for a non league team either on loan or transfer.

I agree Brooks should be second choice and we need an experienced keeper.

I would go for two strong, tall, & experienced centre backs, a tough ball winning defensive midfielder & a wingback that's as good in defence as in attack.

    @Wheelbarrow repair man

If you didn't listen to it tonight.

The first hour of the forum was a question and answer session with questions that were read out to the panel by the host from written questions by fans, during the 2nd part, which again lasted about an hour, the panel took questions from the audience.

The questions from the audience during the 2nd part of tonight's forum were not pre arranged but off the cuff.

All in all I think it was a worthwhile 2 hours of listening. I particularly liked the second half because the panel were challenged more than the first half.

I used to love watching live top grade English football on the TV. I also used to listen to commentary on Radio 5 live too.

But now I don't have any inclination to watch or listen to matches in the modern Premier league at all.

I just find it boring and predictable, with the same teams vying for the major trophies season after season.

Can we really call it a Premier league when there are actually three leagues within it. There is the top six, the middle eight, & the bottom six.

Of course we have some competitiveness within each of those leagues when those teams are playing each within those mini leagues.

Unfortunately, there is such a massive difference between the top six & the bottom six in money terms, which equates to buying power, that it is just like an old first division team playing a third division team back in the old days.

The vast majority of the time, a team that has been promoted, is big odds to go straight down again. You only have to look at this year's Premier League to see the promoted clubs propping up the rest.

The days of a side getting promoted then winning the Premier League will never be repeated because each year the disparity between the top six and the rest of the football pyramid gets bigger & bigger.

I don't like the direction our  beautiful game is going where a small number of clubs will always share the big trophies.

Something needs to change otherwise Football will not be anywhere near what the founding teams like Notts County wanted the Football League to be.

  • This is now getting ridiculous. They ban FA Cup replays because the big clubs say they have too many fixtures, now the big Clubs want an extra league match played in the USA to make even more money.

I don’t watch any premier league games anymore and I couldn’t even tell you who is currently top, that is how little interest I now have in it.
Football started going wrong back in the early 80s when the football league gave in to some clubs threats to breakaway unless they got to keep all home receipts. That just meant that the big clubs got a whole lot bigger and the gap started to widen. Then a few years later they broke away anyway and formed the premier league and widened the gap even more. Then along comes the ever expanding Champions League and that makes the gap insurmountable.

They won’t be content until they’re all in a European super league with no relegation or promotion, practically having their cake and eating it

  • I'm guessing Loughborough gets first pick of the students. I was told Notts don't pay anything, I don't know if any other teams do, although I can't imagine it would be much given the small crowds.

I agree with you regarding ML although I suppose it must cost quite a lot to open the stadium and the more games, the worse the pitch becomes. I notice there have been several Forest U21 games planned at ML and then switched, so wonder if we've asked for that.

I noticed for the last game of the season, Northampton v Notts is at Sixfields. Seems like they're doing the same as us, giving them the final game at the main stadium.

It's going to be tough to get a result there, big difference in level in this league.

Hope Notts can survive this season and build again for next season.

Is anyone else frustrated that they don't want to seem spectators? It's really difficult finding out when games are taking place, and almost impossible to do so any earlier than the morning of the game.

Unless, of course, I'm missing something and one of you kind people can help me...

It would be great to give them some support from time to time.

I believe we have an attacking unit for the ages, why do I say that, because we have seen them in action all season and they have thrilled and entertained us in virtually every game this year.

And they have delivered too. Ninety six goals in all competitions.

We know their names, and they have etched themselves a place  into Magpie folk law.

Dan Crowley, David McGoldrick, Jodi Jones, Macaulay Langstaff & Aaron Nemane & lately joined by Alasana Jatta & Cedwyn Scott waiting in the wings

If we can keep hold of all these players, we should build our team around them including Scott Robertson & Matty Palmer.

If we can add three new defenders, a midfielder and a goalkeeper, that could make a very strong team for next season.

Another thing @Robbie do you think that all of the Notts team coming back to defend tend to get in each others way? And could that also be a reason why Notts have given away 17 penalties this season?

I believe the biggest problem was that the defence was simply not good enough at this level, such as being too slow, unable to perform under pressure & lacking ball skills to cope with opponents at this level.

If a player is not quick enough either on the ground or mentally, they are more likely to make mistakes or foul in pressure situations. Note that these players made less errors in the National League because that was their ceiling level.

There was another important factor too, The Wingbacks that were great going forward were not so good at defending, then our attacking midfielders weren't very good either.

That may have been the reason why defenders, wingbacks, & midfielders got in the way of each other resulting in big mistakes being made and why penalties were conceded too.

When Notts played in the NL, those same mistakes did happen but not at the same frequency we've seen this season.

    @Ohh Tommy Johnson

There are many reasons why strikers miss chances.

The ball is bobbling about when they kick the ball, their shot is blocked, the keeper makes a great save, the striker is impeded by a defender but no foul is given, the striker doesn't get the service, the striker is injured or not fit, the opposing defence is too good or too physical.

There are lots of other reasons such as where the striker is told to play.

All we need to know is that Macaulay got the golden boot and beat all the strikers in the sides that were promoted.

I wouldn't describe Macaulay wasteful at all. His positives far outweigh any negatives

There is a certain striker that cost over £100 million, Erling Haaland and he misses lots of chances too.

    So I don't see a problem here.

Don't get me wrong, nor do I!  You can be both wasteful and a great striker, in fact maybe it is part of what defines a great striker - if a lesser striker misses a few they may not continue getting into those places to put the next chance away.  I wonder what Kane, Lineker or Rooney's stats look like.  It wouldn't surprise me to see they missed a load of chances too. I do disagree with the analysis that teams up the pyramid will look at the stats and think 'he is wasteful', they are much more likely to think 'he can improve even more, maybe be the next Vardy',

I also don't think it will be a disaster if he did leave as the money would be handy, the fact that it will show Notts can enhance your career (along with Rodriguez and Wootton), which will allow us to attract better players who are ambitious, and I think Scott being more clinical will do us just fine along with Jatta,

    @Ohh Tommy Johnson

I agree that it won't be a disaster if he leaves. We have the strikers that could easily bag 20 goals a season without Macaulay.

Using the proceeds of his transfer fee or even just part of it, to build the defensive part of the Notts squad, would give big dividends if used wisely.

Aden is leaving us.

Thanks for your service to Notts and these unforgettable two moments.

They will be forever etched into Notts History.

  • John Bostock and Matt Palmer made a great partnership, but this season he just wasn't the same.

His attitude and desire were never the issue; some players simply find it difficult to adapt when their routine is disrupted. Palmer's injury, along with his own, had a profound impact on him. We require someone with his qualities, but who is more agile. I have always felt Scott Robertson and Matt Palmer would make a great duo - but a defensive minded DM would be excellent to bring in.

John was a massive player for Notts in our promotion year.

It is the measure of the man that he has so much respect from his colleagues.

He will always be welcome down at the Lane. Once a Magpie always a Magpie.

One of the most commited & passionate players we've seen at Notts. A leader on and off the field.

It's been a privilege to have him playing for Notts.

How the Hell are Notts Going to fill the Gap this Guy has left? Not only from his Footballing experience his influence in the Changing Room and the Help he renders to our young players, the Lane Ain't Gonna Be Same Without  Mr Jim O'Brien being there. As I've said before the Word Legend is used so Freely Nowadays, but in Jim's case it is very Apt a Notts County Legend a Warrior and a Bloody Nice Bloke. Once A Magpie Always A Magpie.

JIM O'BRIEN HE'S ONE OF OUR OWN.

Paul Mace mentioned he was off to Italy soon for the Serie C play offs

So an interesting fact per Wikipedia, lowest Serie C crowd was 26 (Juventus next generation)!

After Notts Extremely Poor Performance at FGR the Knives are out for Stuart Maynard. Here is a Selection of Social media comments on the Notts Boss.

I wont be going to Meadow Lane if SM is still there.

No Passion. No Improvement in Defence and getting worse in Attack.

SM moved Jodi the top assister into several positions which in Turn Killed Macca's chances in scoring 30+ goals this Season.

Failed to fix the Defence while Breaking the Attack.

Fans deserve so much more. 1,200 fans show their loyalty and the players Don't even break into a sweat. FGR game.

We had the makings of a League 1 team, but with Maynard in charge the NL Beckons.

The Spirit built by LW as been Destroyed.

That is just a small selection of the Fans feelings regarding Stuart Maynard are they fair or unfair?

I have Produced this Piece in hope it Encourages  Debate and we can all have our Say and Express our feelings as to the goings on at the Lane.

I agree with you that there are much more balanced views on this site and I agree that there are some unhappy fans out there, but I believe they are in the minority.

Were there fans critical of Williams, if course there were? There will always be those who are critical no matter what the circumstances.

But some fans have given Williams a pass because he got us promoted. Let's remember that things could have been quite different in the playoff semifinal & final. In that final Notts were second best on the day.

I for one, am very critical of Williams for not having a plan B or a plan C. He was getting hot under the collar during the latter stages of his tenure.

I want impressed that he ran out of the Club, when he should have seen it through to the end of the season.

One thing you can say about Maynard , he might get frustrated but he doesn't show it. I like a Manager that can keep calm no matter what. Better decisions are made that way.

As for Jodi, he can play in a variety of positions either on the left or right. (He's not comfortable playing as an orthodox wing back though).

It's a good thing tactics wise when Notts have a winger that can play on the left or right. Lots of teams do it.

Stuart would have asked the player himself if he were comfortable playing on the right occasionally, so I don't see any problem there.

    @Robbie

I'm in full agreement with you regarding Williams and since he's gone back to Swansea he certainly, hasn't torn up any trees it will be interesting to see what happens to him, if the Swans only have or seem to be heading for  another mediocre season next season.

There maybe another problem for Maynard, that's interference from above from the likes of Richard Montague and any "Professional" annalists which may or may not be behind the scenes at Notts. Plus if he's been told to Stick to the playing "Model" (I've really Gotten to Hate that term) System no matter what,  then that will hamper his Coaching Methods. And if the Recruitment isn't Spot on and Notts start losing matches, then Maynard is Left as the scapegoat and takes All the Flak from the Fans. After all friend Montague isn't going to put his hand up and Say Publicly "The Recruitment Team Got It Wrong"

What I think would be Interesting is Getting One of the Anti- Stuart Maynard Notts Fans on this Platform and Discuss why they think Maynard shouldn't be in the Meadow Lane Dug Out. Hello Any One Out There? Ready to Debate?

    @Wheelbarrow repair man

We can agree that the current playing model just cannot be rigid.

If Notts are going to get promotion next year they are going to have to modify that playing model in a few ways.

We've discussed this before but Notts need a plan B, C and maybe D to deal with different teams and pitches that they play on.

They need to be able to battle at times, harry and grind results out, they have to employ safety first at the back, deal with free kicks, corners & Crosses, they have to learn to defend in numbers, counter attack when necessary and they have to be strong, physical and mean.

I will be looking with interest in the type of players that they bring in. If it's more of the same type of player, or a different type to what they have had over the last few years.

For me, the pre season friendlies, followed  by the first five league games will tell us a lot about Notts's new season playing style, any modifications to that style, possible plan B or C.

We should  have a good idea by then if Maynard will succeed or not.

Jake Taylor's stats using my metrics for central midfielders.

    PLD 28
    Accurate passes - 550/643 (86%)
    Chances created - 15
Passes into final third - 79
    Accurate long balls - 32
    Dispossessed - 10
    Tackles won - 14
    Recoveries - 82
    Ground duels won - 69/117 (59%)
    Aerial duels won - 13

Seems to have been something of a bit-part player wherever he's gone - his 28 appearances this season were the most he's managed to date, and half of them were off the bench. However, he's also a veteran of Port Vale's successful play-off campaign the other year and has played in League One. We'll see what happens (or doesn't).

Congratulations to Macaulay for winning the Golden Boot award for his 28 goals in League 2 this season.
