I agree totally.  I don't see why a transfer cap can't be introduced.  Include everything that is involved - fee, agent's fees signing on fees, inducements and salary etc and then limit that per division.  Then back it up with meaningful punishment and enforce it.  If the top6 want to go to a European League where they play the same sides week in week out, fine let them go... just bar them from re-entry (or make them start as if they were a totally new club in the league structure) and any players that go are ineligible for international representation whilst outside the UEFA / FIFA controlled competitions.

    Couldn't agree more. We'll put.

I’ve got nothing to say about Forest. I believe clubs should be responsible for the money they use. I hope both they and Everton are treated the same as other rule breakers. It’s going to be a hard time for both clubs, but it sends a warning about spending too much. That is, unless you can afford lawyers to keep the league authorities busy, like Manchester City.

The top six are above the law.Thats the big problem in English football at the moment.

It's easy for any fan to sit back and laugh, seeing a club penalised for failing to meet the Financial Fair Play Rules.

Outside the top 6, how do you match your ambition to improve your club?

There's obviously a right way in doing things and that can take time, time which fans and owners don't usually understand. Everything these days has to be instant, and it doesn't work out like that. I feel sorry for their genuine fans, rather than those who have cropped up since their return to the Premier League. Even some of Kate's family, who rarely attended in the past, seem to be going more. I get this, but I do think their type of support encourages owners to be foolish.

I am thankful that the Reedtz brothers are different to this: we are getting larger attendances but are spending the money in the right areas.

I just wished for those true Forest fans I know, that they started to focus on the players they develop rather than signing in some highly priced player who has little connection to the club.

Whilst I do have sympathy for those true fans, I do believe the decision is to be fair, and I also have to say that Forest fans who engaged with referencing Everton and gloating in the process - it just makes you look bad.

Good luck to them, it's going to be harder to stay up, and I think this is the true reason why Steve Cooper was sacked. They knew this would happen and feared relegation, acted fast and brought in someone they hoped could overcome the points that would be taken.

If a club pays more than 200% of its turnover on players' wages, it's an accident waiting to happen - the rules are there to prevent owners gambling on success and then vanishing if it doesn't work, leaving a mess behind. I mean, they've still got Harry Arter on their wage bill. Flouting the turnover rules put them at a significant advantage to other clubs that adhered to them.

It's plain that they're not a well-run club in general and it wouldn't take much for things to start going south. If they end up in League One again in the not-too-distant future, we've got to make sure we're there to greet them.

13 January is the anniversary of the death of Æthelwulf, king of Wessex in the ninth century and father of Alfred the Great. If Æthelwulf were alive today, he'd almost certainly play the PON prediction league; however, he's dead. This is where you lot come in: predict these matches by 3pm on Saturday, and you might win some points. And remember your jokers!

Huddersfield Town v Plymouth Argyle

Millwall v Middlesbrough

Northampton Town v Wigan Athletic

Reading v Port Vale

Wycombe Wanderers v Lincoln City

Accrington Stanley v Gillingham

Doncaster Rovers v Newport County

Eastleigh v Southend United

The festive period fell a little wayward and, I apologise that this hadn't been completed sooner.

November was a great month for PON, which led nicely into the final calendar month. There was a lot of fantastic effort by the community, which is pleasing and although things did become quieter (quite naturally) nearer to Christmas and the New Year, I still believe it's important to wrap this up. Between myself, @cheeky~k8 and @Burnz3r0.

We have decided upon the nominations for each member group as to who should be named December's Member(s) of the Month here on the Pride of Nottingham.

NewPie of the Month goes to: ???? @Robbie.

Member(s) of the Month goes to: @menzinho and @Piethagoram.

Team Member of the Month goes to: @TheSkipper

Congratulations to the four members! This is a fantastic achievement worth celebrating. So, many excellent contributions and posts during December and, we go again in 2024.

Please take a moment to wish everyone well.

I’ve been chatting with @super_ram on another topic about quiz shows so I thought I’d open up the discussion on its own thread. Do you watch quiz shows? What’s your favourite?

We regularly watch Pointless which is different in that you have to come up with an obscure answer. We also like Tipping Point on channel 4.

Whats your favourite?

  • Player of the season so far: Dan Crowley

    Best performance: Morecambe (H)

Best team we've played: I can't comment on Mansfield, but I thought Wrexham did well against us.

Worst team we've played: Bradford City quite easily, although they did better in the second half.

Best away day: Doncaster was very enjoyable.

Who'd you appoint as head coach: I'll leave it to the board and Reedtz brothers.

I have had limited time watching this season -  just 4 game, so I'll base this on those 4 games - Sutton (a), Gillingham (a), FGR (h) Wrexham (h).

Player of the Season:  Jodi Jones

    Best Performance: Gillingham

    Best Team played against: Wrexham

Worst Team:  Sutton - just thugs

Best Away Day: Gillingham - it was my birthday and my partner had my name read out over the tanoy at half time and we took all our children.  Great fun!

New Coach:  Pep or Klopp, but if they are busy or aren't careful with the step up, then I would go with anyone who can keep our identity going whilst introducing some steel in our defence.

    Player of the sesson:  Jodi

    Best performance: Donny away

    Best team played: Mansfield

    Worse team played: Donny

Best away day: Donny in the sun

Who'd you appoint head coach?: DOnt know, leave it to Chris & Alex.

  • I won't be buying an EV anytime soon, they are expensive to buy, the range is pathetic, they are dangerous, (liable to set on fire), the 2nd hand value is terrible, the insurance is extortionate, there are not enough charging points, and people just cannot afford them new.

They are very heavy too and are churning up the surfaces of all our roads, causing widespread damage such as potholes etc. And, they are putting up the cost of insurance for every road vehicle user.

The date to scrap petrol and Diesel Cars should be suspended and people have the choice to buy what they want, for as long as they want.

woah - I'm in the wrong business,  I used to take mine to a really good body shop, but they now take written off commercial vans with some cosmetic damage, repair them and then sell them on. They say there is no money in just doing the accident repairs as the mark up on the vans is vast compared to the repairs.

@robbie Things have moved on... EVs have much longer ranges these days.  My current EV has a range of 120 miles, which means I stop every 2 hours so is no bad thing.  The new one I am looking at is over 400miles.. although if I get the 'performance model' it will be closer to 320.  The charging network is better, but you are right it is much harder to charge than fill up with petrol.  However, with the longer range I would be able to mostly charge at home so that would be less of a problem.  A new car is eye wateringly expensive though.. and somewhat unnecessarily so, as they are far simpler than an internal combustion engine - the same goes for servicing.  All they need to do is check the resistance on the cables, brakes, steering and tyres etc and yet they charge the same as for a full service on a petrol or diesel car. Insurance is also very high, probably as a result of profiteering as the Insurance companies have all the information to show that EVs do not catch fire as often as IC cars which they present as the reason for high premiums. The setting on fire issue is simply not true ( the risk is about 10x lower than an internal combustion car - Australian government, Norwegian and Swedish government figures show this.  Our government doesn't produce figures).  I can't comment on resale value, but I am looking to sell mine soon, so I will be able to tell you.  One reason is that people think that the batteries degrade, which they do and they are expensive to replace, but mine has done 70000miles and I have noticed no degradation at all so far.  The range is pretty much the same as when I brought it nearly new, maybe 2 or 3 miles less per full charge.

My EV is a lot lighter than the lorries that use the same roads as me so I am not sure how much damage I do in comparison.  Cheap, poor repairs is more likely the cause than EVs - water gets into the gaps around a poor repair and this then causes more holes.  Chronic underfunding is the cause of this problem, not EVs, however, it suits the current governments anti-green agenda to push this as it provides cover for their failings.

I have a feeling you may not buy into climate change, but if we are to continue to allow people to use fossil fuels, then there should be some levy to cover the costs of adaptation  - flood defences, drought measures etc.  Likewise, there needs to be something done to drive costs of green technologies down to make them accessible to all.  I don't know what they would be, as grants and subsidies only result in price increases by manufacturers and suppliers.  It is a tricky one.

Luca joins Notts till the end of the season. Welcome Luca.

  • I don't think Jim will be the person to drop Aidan Stone for a loanee. I also believe that when we hire a manager, he will value experience and probably try to bring Sam Slocombe back into the fold more. I doubt he will be given the chance to sign a better replacement, and I think this lad and Tiernan Brooks are far from being ready to start regularly. It's a bit of a lacklustre signing.

Stone is not good at distributing, a key Notts area, he cannot command his area well, and he's just average at shot stopping.

They will probably keep with Stone for the next 5 important matches, but afterwards there needs to be a rethink. Either change the way Notts play out from the back most of the time, or change the goalie to someone  who will be comfortable with our existing playing style.

We’ve got two new players, but no centre back yet. Maybe the club thinks the new manager will alter the formation? I’d like a CB to join, but it might take time. Luca Ashby Hammond might have to wait for his debut, but I hope it proves his signing was wise. Otherwise, it could end up like the Ollie Tipton territory.

I’ve had a very very authentic sounding call from o2 offering me 40% off my current bill, I actually fell for it at the beginning. They seemed knew my email address and sent a text message with a code, they then asked me to tell them the code which stupidly I told them then they sent an email with a link to reset my password this is where I got suspicious and terminated the call. I switched my phone off and back on again to make sure they weren’t still on the line and immediately phoned o2 who checked my account and advised me to change my password, they also said they’d never ask for a code number they’d sent in a text which I should have known.

Luckily they didn’t get into my account but if I’d gone ahead and changed my password from their link they would have been able to access the account and buy phones etc.

I think because they knew my email they were able to try to access my account which sends an official text with a code to my phone which because it was definitely from o2 I was happy to give them. Thankfully the warning bells sounded when they asked me to click a link to change my password.

I am normally very wary of calls like this but this was very clever and very believable so please beware if you are an o2 customer.

Some good news to report to begin the week.

On Saturday Notts travel to Grimsby, how many links can we find between the two clubs.

My offering is Gary Lund one of my favourite all time players. He started his career at Grimsby and played for them between 1983-1986, he arrived at Notts in 1987 via Lincoln and stayed until 1995 making 248 appearances scoring 62 goals.

How many more can we find? Over to you.

Game 27 - The Mariners (A)

Team:  Grimsby Town

Date: 13/01/2024

Where: Blundell Park

What line-up should we opt for? What will be the key areas for the Magpies to get a victory? What do you think the final score will be?

Have your say below, join in with the Pride of Nottingham match discussion.

  • Yeah, I'm not saying the defence are perfect but when you have just 3 natural defenders in the team what do you expect... It kind of seems obvious now. Even Man City play with 4 defenders and then they have Rodri who is very defensively switched on. We've stepped up a level in terms of opposition now so moving forward for the tough away games and home games we absolutely need to think about making tweaks to become more solid. One of the CM's to just focus on providing protection for the defenders and it might be painful to do but I'd even think about sacrificing one of Nemane or Jodi for a more defensive option in Tobi or Chicksen. It's about balance really and we are almost overloaded with attackers. I think just a few small changes could have a big impact.

And as for the game itself; Painful, madness, speechless.

I honestly was thinking at half-time Grimsby will score within the first 10 minutes of the re-start; 7 minutes it took them. I should’ve put some money on it. But to let them score just 1 minute after we claw it back to 3-3… I felt sick when we got it back to 4-4. And at 4-5 I thought at least we’ll get a point at worst now! BUT I WASN’T ACTAULLY BEING SERIOUS. Bloody hell Notts.

And I know our defending is bad, but we basically scored the same goal 4 times, JJ crossing it to the back stick for a tap in! Someone got that Spiderman meme for the Notts and Grimsby ability to defend…

Our defence was weak, but a new manager could fix this. It was positive to stay in the match and nearly score. Grimsby has similar problems, but we’re better placed to improve. I’m content with the draw, hoping we’ll have a new manager for our next match.

A warm welcome to @magpiemad I hope you enjoy being a member of our friendly community.

Ok folks the weekend is here, who’s got some exciting plans? Whose plans are not so exciting? Let’s talk in general about what you are up to or have been up to this weekend.

Tonight Mrs. T is cooking one of her famous curries a lovely chicken Passanda then we will watch the latest edition of The Traitors on BBC 1.

Tomorrow it’s the Park Run my son is volunteering to be a bar code scanner this week so it means he’ll have to go early so I won’t get my usual lift and have to drive myself. ☹️ I’m usually inackered afterwards so it’ll be a slow drive back.

In the afternoon I’ll be listening to Radio Nottingham on the Notts match at Grimsby hoping Big Jim can rally the team and get a win.

Sunday to be confirmed.

What are you up to this weekend?

My plans are 100% not exciting.  I am going to try and put a side panel on my bath (having changed the plug and air blower for the spa bit)in the week.  All that, keeping an eye on my partner following yesterday's chemo and also getting a couple runs in - a long one on Sunday and maybe a Parkrun tomorrow.

Just like to wish everyone on PON a Happy New Year.

Our boss is super excited and has asked me to make sure if our members are subscribed. If not, are they okay with me manually adding their emails to our brand new newsletter database?

We’re really eager to include most of the active members of our community. Of course, we wouldn’t dream of adding anyone’s email without their permission. If you’re okay with it, just leave a comment below to let us know. No need to share your email address here - if it’s different from the one you use for Pride of Nottingham, just mention it and I’ll send you a private message. This way, we can avoid any unwanted spam.

Please be aware that this doesn’t cover the mass emails sent through the system with updates or alerts. It also doesn’t include the occasional in-house email that our gaffer sends out. This is strictly for members who love PON, want to hear from former players, and look forward to receiving a monthly newsletter.

  • He looks like a player of the right age, just waiting to fit into a team like Notts.

If he settles in well and works hard, he should prove to be a good signing. I have heard he's got a bit of a bad attitude from fans of his former club(s). I usually wait to make my own judgement, but it's always interesting to see what people say.

    Personally, I think it's a good signing.

He looks quite stocky for a young player, so if he is physically strong that would be a blessing. It seems like a good signing, but until we see him on the pitch, we won't know for sure. However, I am more than ready to give him time if he doesn't start brightly. If he starts well, even better, but it may take him time to find his natural place in the squad. Welcome to Meadow Lane, Scott Robertson.

When do you take yours down?

I don’t go with all this twelfth night business, I’m not superstitious, we took ours down today as we hate to have them around in the new year so they are now banished back to the loft.

Welcome to Pride of Nottingham @samantha louise
