The sad farewell of Nottingham man Colin Pomberth, who died alone

    - Pensioner died alone and neighbours did not even know his name

    - Decomposing body discovered by police weeks after his death

    - Three people attend the 'public health funeral'

THREE distant relatives attended the funeral of pensioner Colin Pomberth, who died alone.

A short service at Wilford Crematorium yesterday was one of three already held this week in similar circumstances.

Such tragedies have led Age UK Notts, backed by the Post, to launch a campaign to End Loneliness.

The last time anyone saw partially-deaf Mr Pomberth, 72, alive, he was putting his bins outside his sparsely-furnished home in Hopedale Close, Radford, on August 14 last year.

His neighbours did not even know his name.

But one realised something was wrong when maggots began dropping through her ceiling from his flat above.

Police discovered his body. It was so badly decomposed that a cause of death could not be determined.

Very, very sad. Really says a lot about communities these days, once upon a time everyone would have known everyone but because of the way we have gone people now hide themselves a way - keeping to themselves.

    R.I.P Colin Pomberth

  3. If anyone is interested, I took quite a few crowd pics. I tend to do this for the majority of games where ever possible really, however It's only just came to me people within our community might be interested.

  8. I've been into photography for a number of years, however I have never taken it seriously. I do tend to take snaps with my mobile and the quality of those are okay, I don't claim to be a @Dan or anything.

It's just something I enjoy to do.

  9. Poinstewsrdsts to keep in your mind, when reading.

1.I have been a steward for 28 years, and the longest serving steward.

    2. We have always had to sign in for duty by 1pm.On Saturdays.

Left home a bit later than usual on Saturday, so had to hurry, was out of breath, due to the recent respiratory failure, by the time I got to the stewards room. Got there at 5 to 1, only to be told that I was to late to sign in and to go home. I said it's only 5 to. Sorry to late.

I asked If could watch the game. Yes but only if you buy a ticket. I didn't exit ground and went into Lawtons bar and had a couple of drinks, and stayed and watched game. I was fuming after being treated like this.

My dilemma is I am thinking of a season ticket. And tell them to stuff it. But the money I earn there helps towards our holidays. And I do get to see all the game. Am I cutting my nose off to spite my face.

A season ticket would cost me 220.00 pounds.

    But I enjoy stewarding.

    Can you see my dilemma.

    P.s

sorry its a bit long winded.

  11. The former Barcalona coach has today passed away aged just 45. He had been battling throat Cancer for a few years. He went to New York for treatment a few years ago, but has suffered a relapse, and retired at the end of last season to concentrate on his health. Sadly, cancer has taken yet another life far too young.

R.I.P Tito. Thoughts go out to his family, friends, and FC Barcalona.

  12. Let me apologise for not posting in the last few days. I have a severe 'gentlemens' infection. One has swollen to twice the size of its mate!

Doctors got me on strong antibiotics and off work for two weeks.

difficult to walk never mind sit up at a computer so I wont be around for a regular visit for the next fortnight.

You never know. Maybe by the time the infection has gone Notts might be in the middle of a great escape, although I wont be escaping anywhere fast. Too painful by far!

  14. I often think that 'the house that Derek built' is a slight problem for us.

don't get me wrong. I think Derek Pavis has been the best thing that happened to the club in my lifetime chairman wise. ( Sorry Ray, Dunnett and dont forget JAH and his jumpers) Put the bad issues with him taking money out of the club etc...against the stadium and team and finances during his tenure then even through rose tinted specs it looked good.

Meadow Lane needed rebuilding, no doubt, but looking at Joes Photos and the comment about RU's new ground got me to thinking seriously about the Lane.

Yes I love going there. It's history pure and simple. Would going to another ground be the same? No.

Would that be a big problem? Initially yes, after time I dont think so.

Leaving a stand virtually empty is a tragedy. I loved standing in the JS stand in my youthful days, at the back singing etc...

Now it gives a very poor impression as the camera is always mounted on top of the DP stand and the JS is, well, empty!

The pitch is poor at ML. Getting worse, not better this year and with 3 teams including the egg chuckers, its only going to get worse.

Location next to the reds has always been a slight issue.

    Parking is a big issue.

Atmosphere on a week in week out basis is not great.

    so...

Do we build a camera point on the JS to eliminate that issue?

relay the pitch for the ???th time?

    Move?

Obviously money is the issue with moving, but if the land at ML was sold, surely we could build a 10/15000 stadium somewhere else in Notts that is easy to get to?

Really should have submitted this as a blog i suppose, not a message!

This picture was taken by our friends B&O Press Photo - Epic photography! Brilliant for getting people in the spirit of the greatescape game at Meadow Lane!

  16. So if you had the chance of taking one player from the Premiership and putting him in your team (no matter who you support) who would you pick.

My choice would be Steven Gerrard, I think he is fantastic and I would love to see him in a Notts shirt at Meadow Lane. I can dream can't I?

    1. 1. Should David Moyes be sacked???

      • Yes. He's had enough time now to bring them down a peg or two!

      • No where enough time yet. Give him a break.

Interesting one for me this one. I'm torn between yes or no. Anyone following Ferguson was doomed to failure. Anyone. maybe a new slate with a new manager for the new season will be what they really need as Moyes will be forever called Fergusons choice rather than the best man for the job.

Manchester United manager David Moyes could be sacked within 24 hours, according to Sky sources.

The club are currently refusing to comment.

Sky Sports News presenter Charlie Thomas says that in itself is "significant" after a season that has been "very disappointing" by United's high standards.

143252584-1-522x293.jpgSir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes in 2012, when Sir Alex was United manager

He added "all the indications are" that Moyes' tenure is coming to an end.

The Scot, who replaced Sir Alex Ferguson last May, has endured a miserable time in the Old Trafford hot seat.

The reigning Premier League champions are currently seventh in the Premier League table and will miss out on Champions League football for the first time in almost 20 years next season.

moyes-1-1-522x293.jpgFans initially backed Moyes but support has waned as results have worsened

The Red Devils slumped to a 2-0 loss away to Everton on Sunday - the club Moyes left to take the United job.

The club's share price on the New York Stock Exchange has dropped amid the rumours.

Louis Van Gaal, the manager of the Dutch national team, is the early favourite to take the job if Moyes goes.

cegrab-20130512-182038-389-1-522x293.jpgThe post-Ferguson era has been a difficult one for United so far

He was given a six-year contract after being handpicked by Sir Alex as his successorwhen he retired after 26 years in the job.

When Moyes' appointment was announced, Sir Alex said the club had "unanimously agreed" he was the right man.

"There is no question he has all the qualities we expect of a manager at this club," Sir Alex said.

Sir Alex's time at Manchester United established them as the dominant force in English football, with a string of league titles and cup successes for fans to celebrate.

Moyes described the opportunity to follow in Sir Alex's footsteps as a "great honour".

"I know how hard it will be to follow the best manager ever, but the opportunity to manage Manchester United isn't something that comes around very often and I'm really looking forward to taking up the post next season," he said at the time.

  18. It is getting to that time of the season again!

Who do you think Notts should keep in the squad, sell/let go and who would you like to see signed down at the Lane?

  19. Just found this on the ladies website:

Ellen White is facing a spell on the side lines after picking up a cruciate ligament injury in Notts County's pre-season campaign.

The England international suffered the injury in County’s last pre-season friendly against Durham Women, and scans later showed the Magpie’s worst fears as it was confirmed that the striker had injured her cruciate ligaments in her knee.

Notts County manager Rick Passmoor said “It’s bad news for us, everyone is aware of Ellen’s ability, we’ve had a great pre-season and we were all ready to go. It’s a set back but it gives the opportunity for other players to step up into the role. Jess Clarke has started really well for us playing up front, she’s got three goals already. It’s a blow for us, and for Ellen, but we’ll be working hard to get Ellen back to fitness and we look forward to welcoming her back into the team.â€

  20. As I said in another post we have a workman in the house doing our bathroom but is it just me who notices that workmen always seems to leave all the doors open because they are nipping out to their vans to get tools and equipment, it's been bloody freezing today in our living room, I kept shutting it but next time I looked it would be open again.

Having said that he is a really nice lad and works really hard, he has a radio on all day (don't they all) and it is smooth radio, I must say they have a good mix of my sort of music on there, I wouldn't have thought it would be to his taste, he is in his twenties I think, perhaps it depends who he is working for and because we are old fogey's (in his eyes) he sorts some appropriate music.

He certainly clears up after him, hoses down the drive, vacuums the carpets etc., I am impressed so far.

He says I might get my garage back tomorrow when he starts to fit the bath and toilet, its in the garage along with the tiles and all his tools.

  21. Looks like you can avoid the drop especially as your last home match is against away day strugglers Swindon Town.

But  ..... will your team be nervous, will your fans get on their backs or will you perhaps have an off day?

We have more than matched (just) your recent revival and still have (mathematically) something to play for.

Should be a lively encounter do you not think Joe?

    Best wishes to all,

    Mickeyr
