IN DERRY WE TRUST; from the League Paper.
Β
SHAUN Derry never took many prisoners as a player. And as the dust settled on Notts County's amazing escape from relegation, he wasn't about to start pulling any punches as a manager. Bottom and adrift when he took charge in November, the 36-year-old has kicked the Magpies into shape, with six wins from their final eight games meaning a final-day draw at Oldham was enough to secure another season in League One.
A boyhood County fan who came through the ranks at Meadow Lane, Derry shed tears of joy on the pitch, hailing his players for saving "not just a club but a community". But in the cold, hung-over light of the morning after, Derry's elation had been replaced by a simmering anger at the state of his beloved club. "The supporters of this club have been let down," said Derry, who abandoned a playing contract at Millwall to become County's ninth manager in five chaotic years. "And that's not me pointing the finger at past managers by any stretch of the imagination. Everybody has to take responsibility for what has happened to Notts County, the board included. It's been an accumulation of mismanagement throughout and that boils down to the players as well.I've been in and around plenty of difficult situations: administrations, relegations, everything that goes with it. And I've been involved with too many managers to even list. But no matter what happens, you've just got to stick in there and keep your own qualities, your own focus. As a player, you set your own standards.
"Players are very quick to push the excuse button aren't they? And as much as we should quite rightly hail staying up as a fantastic achievement, these players have to take a very close look at themselves in the mirror this summer. They have to say 'Hang on, have I done everything, absolutely everything, to warrant being called a success?' And if they've got high standards, they'd have to say 'Probably not'."
Derry knows a thing or two about poor standards. During his time at QPR, Hoops' chairman Tony Fernandes was taken for a ride by agents and advisors, leading to the arrival of disinterested mercenaries on astronomical wages. The subsequent rifts and divisions, with the likes of Jose Bosingwa and Chris Samba paid ten times more than Derry or Clint Hill for barely lifting a leg, resulted in what Harry Redknapp called "the worst dressing room I've ever seen" and relegation from the Premier League.
"That QPR dressing room was like the wild west," said Derry. "Punchups, arguments, people not speaking to each other. Everything was wrong. And on a smaller scale, this place was the same. It's just that the Indians weren't as big as the ones at QPR. QPR was on a grander scale in terms of finances, and in terms of the characters and reputations. But even then I always had my own way, my own ideas on how I would combat that situation. That's why Notts County didn't frighten me."
And why he immediately took a scythe to the squad, shipping out some 11 players on loan by the end of January, including the likes of Enoch Showunmi, David Bell and Danny Haynes.
"I don't think we got a point for the first four games. You quickly work people out and I very, very definitely worked people out that first month. With the greatest respect, I edged away from those bigger characters and tried to bring in people who had an appreciation for the club. Of course, there were two or three performances that were far from what I wanted. But generally I felt that the fans got value for money and a group of lads who gave them everything."
Most of those players like Hayden Mullins, Jack Grealish, and Callum McGregor were loanees and have now returned to their parent clubs. And that means Derry must now set about building a squad in his own image.
"The best manager I ever played under was Neil Warnock," said Derry, who will register as a player next season 'for emergencies'."And the most important thing he taught me was that you must be able to rely on the players in the dressing room. Yes you need talent. But it's just as important to have the type of player who'll run the dressing room for you. Without that, you can never be sure of what's going to come out of it. So I need to make sure above all else that the players I bring here are the right type. New players are definitely what's needed. We need to get the most out of the budget, get players who are a lot more hard-nosed to the rigours of League One football. Because I felt that we were quite a soft touch when I came here in November. They rolled over so easily, and that can't happen. League One is a grind. It's a fight. We weren't fully equipped for that when I got here. Next year, I want to make sure we are."
And after the miracle, time to reflect on a job well done. "I never envisioned going straight from player to manager," added Derry. "But I'm glad it's happened the way it has, and that's it's ended well.
"It's been full-on, it's been frantic, I've been learning on the job. This has been some education, it really has. And as an achievement, keeping this club it's right up at the top with anything I did as a player. Now I'll have a few days off and try and look forward to next season, perhaps from a sun lounger!"

SD has said Jimmy is our new number 9 for next season. About time too. We've needed a quality forward to lead the line and JS looks the business. Good luck Jimmy.
Β
SHAUN Derry revealed Notts County faced competition for Jimmy Spencer's signature but says the forward made the right choice by staying at Meadow Lane.
The Notts boss this week tied the forward to a new two-year deal making him the first of six out of contract players to commit his future to the club.
Spencer (pictured) was superb for the Magpies as they avoided relegation to League Two, scoring five goals after he was signed on a free transfer after his release by Huddersfield in January.
According to Derry, scouts were soon flocking to check the 22-year-old's progress as he helped drive the club out of the relegation zone.
And despite several clubs attempting and failing to persuade him to leave the Magpies, Derry said his striker had made the right decision.
"This club is a great platform to play football, it really is," said Derry.
"And yes one or two clubs showed an interest in Jimmy in close season.
"But with the greatest of respect to them, I think he has made the right choice.
"Of course, I was a little bit worried about somebody taking him off our hands.
"When I looked at the scout list before every game, it was no coincidence that it was the same names and same teams every time.
"I knew who they were watching Γ’β¬β it was Jimmy. I'm pleased he has put his faith in us."
Derry confirmed that Spencer would be the club's number nine next season, a shirt that has been vacated by Enoch Showunmi who was released at the end of the season.
And the Notts chief maintains he will have a hugely important role to play next season.
"I've told him that he's my number nine," he said.
"He is the one that I am going to put all my faith in next season."

I've got to admit, the underr17 boys were fairly good especially against the Dutch. Beautiful save BTW we might do well in penalties if we get to the WC 2018.
I know it's four years time, and that the majority of the players probably won't make the England team or the premiership. But there is a few that you have to keep an eye out for:
Tafari Moore
Taylor Moore
Lewis Cook
Josh Onomah
Dominic Solanke
All these players were exceptional today.
Well done boys

I hope for the next few days this board is quiet as we should be enjoying the sunshine out there. Just finished blowing up the paddling pool for the kids and filling it. After 30 trips with the hot water bucket and the garden hose it is a nice temperature for a change!

I took Grandson George to watch this match yesterday. It ended 0-0 and to be honest I wasn't overly impressed at the football on offer.
Without being derogatory to the ladies it made me appreciate watching the men's team. Anyone else go? Am I being harsh?

Matt Derbyshire has been released by that lot across the river. He'd score goals in League One. His wages might be an issue though.Β
Β
Ismael Miller. He went on loan at Yeovil and did well. Fell out with the manager and was sent back to that lot across the river. He will get offers from Championship clubs I guess, but he'd do very well for us. Again wages may be the stumbling block.....
Β
Stephen Pearson. He was released by Bristol City yesterday. He missed 6 months due to an ankle injury, but is fit now. 31 years old, played for Celtic and Derby. He has a terrific attitude. He'd be an asset at any club. I think we could have a genuine shot at getting him if we wanted to.Β

My children overheard a modern take on the classic the other day as we walked around Tesco, whilst I upgraded the site - I watched music videos with my youngest daughter Ava. After watching Dear Jessie (literally 5 times!) I decided to play some of Weird Al's parody's. White & Nerdy, Amish Paradise - all quickly got shakes of the head and a couple of lite smacks to measure (I assume she doesn't like rap music). Anyways, I clicked this just to test it and she loved it.
Anyways I could share a tone of his songs but any Star Wars fans should find this to be pretty funny.

George: "who do you support Grandad?"

George: "Well I'll support the overdogs then"

Where are you sitting next season?
I will be returning to the Kop, both myself and Jake miss the stand. I learned to appreciate the Family Stand, I wasn't very keen at first. Very quiet and awkward to sing/chant but by time the season was over I had people joining in and I think the results went along with that. However, it's got to be the Kop.
What about you?

As expected, Man City have broken the FFP rules. The sanctions look harsher than I expected tbh. I expected a small slap on the wrist. It's not a major issue for them, but it is a fly in the ointment for them.
Β
Β
Manchester City face a ΓΒ£50m fine and having to limit their Champions League squad to just 21 players next season, instead of the normal 25, after breaching Uefa Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules, Sky News understands.
Under sanctions which the club are contesting, City will also have to cap their spending on Champions League players so spending does not exceed this year's total.
The reduction in the size of the Champions League squad to 21 could hit City hardest, as they will have to continue selecting eight "home-grown" players in the squad.
City are contesting the Uefa sanction, but if they do not agree to the sanctions, set out in an initial "settlement offer", they face even stiffer penalties.

Final confirmation of the sanctions is expected on Friday, two days before City's title-deciding game against West Ham at the Etihad.
Under the FFP rules, clubs are not permitted to lose more than ΓΒ£37m over two seasons unless they can show that losses have been incurred by investments in club infrastructure, including youth development, academies and stadium development.
In the two seasons tested by Uefa 2011-12 and 2012-13, City's combined losses were almost ΓΒ£150m, with losses of almost ΓΒ£200m in 2010-2011.
While some of those losses can be legitimately written off - for example City are building a ΓΒ£100m playing campus next to the Etihad Stadium -Β Uefa have concluded not all of their losses are legitimate under the terms of FFP.

Uefa also examine sources of revenue, which cannot be from "related parties" if they are to count as income for FFP accounting purposes. City's ΓΒ£40m-a-year shirt and stadium sponsorship deal with Etihad, the Abu Dhabi state airline, has been scrutinised, though City says it was done at a fair market rate.
It is understood Uefa found some of City's accounting in their original submission to be less transparent than expected, which has prompted a closer look at all the figures.
City have been on collision course with Uefa over FFP ever since the club's Abu Dhabi owners embarked on an unprecedented spending spree after buying the club in August 2008.
Since then, they have spent more than ΓΒ£600m on transfer fees, winning the FA Cup in 2011, the Premier League in 2012 and the League Cup this season. They require just four points from their remaining two games to be almost certain of winning the league this year.
Paris St Germain, backed by Qatari wealth, have also fallen foul of the FFP rules and face similar sanctions.

If Notts had gone for a more experienced manager when they sacked Kiwomya, there were three other managers who were available at the time if memory serves me well, Nigel Clough, Steve Cotterill and John Gregory.
Β
Clough went to Sheff Utd., and they just missed out on the play offs finishing 7th after being down the bottom with Notts, Steve Cotterill went to Bristol City who ended up finishing a very creditable 12th and I think John Ward was available and he went to Crawley who were also near the bottom and he steered them to safety and a finishing position of 14th.
Β
So had one of these managers been appointed would we have had an easier time at the end of the season and not had the nail biting finish we did have?
Β
Not that I would change anything because I think Derry has done a fantastic job.
