Tranmere Rovers 0-0 Notts County: Magpies Dominate Possession but Settle for a Point at Prenton Park

PON_News

The 2024/25 League Two season began with a goalless draw between Tranmere Rovers and Notts County at Prenton Park, as the Magpies controlled much of the game but were unable to convert their dominance into a winning goal.

Stuart Maynard's Notts County side took control from the outset, enjoying 65.4% of the possession, yet found themselves frustrated by a resilient Tranmere defence. The hosts, however, started brightly, with debutant Cameron Norman providing an early scare for the visitors. His dangerous cross after 15 minutes forced the Magpies to clear the ball from close to their goal line.

Tranmere's most threatening moments came through Luke Norris, who tested debutant goalkeeper Alex Bass with a sharp turn and shot in the 18th minute. Bass, one of four debutants for Notts, reacted swiftly to keep the effort out, underlining his importance in securing a point for the visitors. Tranmere managed eight shots during the match but found the target just twice, with Bass dealing comfortably with their best opportunities.

Notts County grew into the match as the first half wore on, crafting their best chance just before the half-hour mark. Matty Platt's precise pass found Adam Chicksen, whose knockdown presented Cedwyn Scott with an opportunity on the edge of the area. However, his left-footed effort was blocked, one of several instances where Tranmere’s defence stood firm under pressure.

The second half saw the Magpies continue to assert their dominance, with Tranmere managing only 34.6% of the possession. Despite this, Tranmere looked dangerous on the break, and Josh Davison had a golden opportunity on 65 minutes after being played in by Norris. However, Bass was again up to the task, making a comfortable save from close range.

Notts County responded quickly, and their best chance of the match came moments later. Dan Crowley delivered a superb cross into the box, but Alassana Jatta could only head over from six yards. The Magpies registered 11 shots in total, though only one of these efforts tested the Tranmere goalkeeper.

As the match drew to a close, Notts continued to press, winning eight corners compared to Tranmere’s five. However, despite their relentless pressure, they couldn't find the breakthrough. Robbie Cundy came closest in stoppage time, glancing a header wide from a Crowley corner, much to the relief of the home supporters.

Discipline was an area of note, with Tranmere committing 13 fouls and receiving one yellow card, while Notts were penalised five times and also had a player booked.

In the end, despite their superior possession and the increased number of shots, Notts County had to settle for a point. The Magpies can take heart from a dominant second-half display, though they will undoubtedly feel they deserved more from a game in which they controlled large periods and created the better chances.

i thought it was a very promising performance, tranmere made it difficult to score and i thought both teams gave a good showing. with tranmere being more physical, it was always going to be an issue to break them down. i think the subs helped to give us more chances, i just think within time we need to be more direct on goal. defensively, notts were superb. alex bass looks a brilliant keeper.

We certainly had the lions share of possession and we looked very good defensively, credit to Maynard for the second half substitutions all of whom fitted in seamlessly, in the end we could have nicked it as we looked stronger towards the end but I guess a draw was a fair result.

I think a draw is a fair result, even though we had the better chances and more possession. Tranmere defended well and kept us from scoring, but we also showed a lot of promise. The team looked cohesive, and Bass did an outstanding job in goal. It's early in the season, so there’s plenty of time to work on our finishing. If we continue to play like this, I’m confident we’ll start putting away games soon. Our midfield was especially strong, and it’s clear they’ll be a crucial part of our game plan moving forward. A bit more work in training, and we’ll start seeing the results we want.

Solid defense by Tranmere, not what I expected. Good point for Notts though.

I thought we were the better team out there today, despite not scoring. The midfield was excellent, keeping Tranmere on the back foot for most of the match. It’s just a shame we couldn’t convert our chances. Bass was impressive in his debut, looks like a solid addition to the squad. There’s room for improvement, especially in the attacking third, but if we continue to control games like this, the wins will come. The second half was a masterclass in keeping possession. We just need that cutting edge to turn a good performance into a great result.

I feel a bit torn by this result. On one hand, we played some beautiful football and controlled the game. On the other, we didn’t get the win we probably deserved. Bass really impressed in goal and made sure we didn’t go behind. Our attacking players need to sharpen up a bit though; 11 shots but only one on target isn’t good enough. It’s positive to see the team playing with such confidence though, and the new signings seem to be settling in well. If we can turn our possession into goals, we’ll be in for a great season. A solid start, but improvements needed.

What a performance from our lads, even if it did end in a draw. We completely dominated the game with over 65% possession - you don't see that too often in an away match. Tranmere's defence held strong, but they were lucky not to concede. Our debutants showed great promise and Bass in particular was a standout. If we keep playing like this, the results will come. Maybe just a bit more sharpness in front of goal and we’d be talking about a win today. Not concerned yet, as it’s early days and the team is gelling. Looking forward to seeing more fluidity and goals in the upcoming games.

It’s a bit frustrating to see us dominate possession and not come away with all three points. Tranmere’s defence was really solid, but we had enough chances to win the game. Bass was fantastic in goal, making key saves when it mattered. Our debutants showed promise, and there’s definitely potential in this squad.

What we desperately need now is a goal scorer who can capitalise on all these chances. I’m optimistic about our season given how we played today, but we can’t afford to drop points in games where we dominate so much. Here’s hoping the next match sees us more clinical in front of goal

Although a goalless draw isn’t the best way to kick off the season, there’s a lot to be optimistic about. The lads controlled the game from start to finish and were unlucky not to score. Bass made crucial saves and we had several near misses. Tranmere’s defence was hard to crack, but our team’s overall performance shows we’re heading in the right direction. Let’s hope Maynard works on our finishing for the next matches. COYP!

We dominated the possession, but need to be more clinical upfront. Still, a promising start!

I am not downhearted. I think it was a spirited performance, and Notts looked very composed at the back. Going forward, all it takes is for one clever moment to open up the play, but I am encouraged by the display.

I can’t say that anyone who watched the game should have gone home unhappy. Notts tried, and it was a task to get a glimpse at goal without a Tranmere player or two blocking the path. I thought we showed some very creative passing, which could have led to a goal. I think the squad did well, happy defensively and encouraged with the way we attacked the game. A few more efforts on goal would have been great, but it’s reasonably acceptable.

Quite frustrating, but the team showed promise. Bass was brilliant in goal.

By all accounts, the draw is a good start. I think if a goal had gone in, it would have forced Tranmere to attack us more. I think a point is a good enough start. If we win on Saturday, we could be well on our way to starting a nice streak, which early on could be a massive thing.

I'm very pleased with the performance.

To get a clean sheet in our first away match compared to conceding 5 last season marks a big sea change for me.

Standouts for me are Alex Bass & Jacob Bedeau who I believe will be big for the club this season.

Special credit for the whole team & substitutes for working hard, keeping it tight, and nearly stealing the match at the end.

Stuart needs a mention too, for picking his starting eleven and the substitutions that he made in the second half that nearly proved a game changer.

That's what Notts were missing last season. Players that can come on and make a difference. That's another big sea change.

Let's not get too ahead of ourselves but first impressions are very positive.

Doesn't it show that most fans just want to see the effort and will praise the players for that, even if we only managed one shot on goal? Tranmere made it almost impossible by parking the bus, especially during set pieces. It wasn't a boring draw, like some have said.
