Strange for him to retire so early in the season, but I wish him luck in his retirement.

Will he go into coaching or punditry? I wish him all the best; he's had a good career.

He looks different without the wig!

I never liked him. I thought he could be a dirty striker and overly physical. It’s not terrible news that he is retiring, but I would say good luck nonetheless.

Matt Smith has been a decent striker at various levels. I thought he played dirty against Notts before, but retirement is a sad time for any player. I hope he finds something to do with his spare time.

Good luck to Matt Smith. When he left Salford, he said it was with a heavy heart, and now he’s retired. I wasn’t aware he came into football late, at 20, I think I read.

I'll reserve my thoughts of him as a player, instead choosing to wish him well in retirement and acknowledge that he has been a good player for those he played for. He certainly scored some good goals in his time.

I am surprised that Matt Smith has retired. But he could be a bit dirty. He was a good striker but had his tricks, such as elbowing defenders.

It’s sad when players retire. I wish him all the best. I miss Jim O’Brien more than Michael Doyle.
