I hope this never happens in football, I think that some people can't handle their drink as it is without having access to it in the stands during the match, I can see some folks keep popping up and down to fetch more drinks and disturbing people around them while they get past them.

This seriously did happen, some fan took it in.

If they serve it at half time, I see no difference? If Stewards maintain authority and watch the signs in fans behaviour, I see no reason why not. I just hope if the decision is to ever be changed, they trial it in one stand before making it stand wide. For me no alcohol should be sold in the Haydn Green Stand at all.

@notts-joe, I agree with that should it ever come to pass, no alcohol in family areas! The DP seems the obvious place to trial it at Notts, as allegedly they have a more civilised clientele than the Kop

No, football hasn't learned.

There should be no drinking at all in my opinion. Only before or after the game, keep it simply and avoid danger.

I just think if fights break out over something being spilt on them, which seems to be a one off. I just would be mindful of becoming more than just that, try it in the Pavis. Last thing we need is to hire more stewards, no point in making their job more challenging.

@tonyhateley I often wonder about turning the DP to rubble and starting again, something with electric chairs, that require a certain amount of singing to stop them giving the occupant a shock

Unfortunately there are enough idiots attending matches now who only need the slightest excuse to start trouble.Give them unlimited access to alcohol and god knows what the result would be.

Not sure it would work in British football.

However there needs to be some change. I like a few pints when I go to the football, and normally I would like to get one at half time. However, to queue for 15 minutes and then tip a flat/warm carlsberg in a plastic bottle down my neck as fast as possible..... it doesn't really make the experience enjoyable.

Oh come on you lot. Have you ever been in the crush around the bar at a pub or club before? People regularly spill their drinks on each other and it usually doesn't end in a brawl. Likewise at rugby. Likewise in German football (there is a hooligan problem here, but it isn't drinking in view of the pitch that's the problem!). Why should British football fans be any different? For some reason we're still seen as a threat. This is the same mentality that saw fans watching their football in cages in the 80s. The fences came down, the sky didn't fall down. Why would being able to hold your pint a few yards closer to the pitch result in anarchy and punch-ups galore?

i think the points with football, not pubs.

i have seen fights break out between people who are in pubs and watching the game on tv, its a sport where emotions tend to always get the better of some idiots.

if this was ever to happen, it should be trailed and clubs should require a license which is accessed when they pass. it would cut down the clubs that see it enabling money making and then it would make sure its properly policed. i think its a dangerous mix myself! mainly because of the idiots who just like to fight and cause trouble.

Do emotions not break out in rugby, or in football in other countries? I occasionally have a beer on the terraces and I haven't headbutted anyone yet. I used the example of pubs and clubs because they are full of tanked-up, antisocial idiots, yet the vast majority know when to rein it in. Only at the football people drink a lot less - most people won't be up and down every few minutes because they're there to watch the match. If they were just interested in drinking, they'd be in a pub!

 

Like any other businesses that serve alcohol, clubs are already subject to licensing laws - only in our case the rules are much tighter since we're all animals who can't be trusted. It's one of those silly little things that sullies it for me.

I know Mr Trews often mentioned he liked rugby because you can drink, it's almost relaxed but I do feel football needs to change a lot more. Germany allow it right? They've probably learned how to cope with it and isn't in their culture to enjoy a drink/become merry? I think we as a nation are different but we should learn from others.

I'd be interested to know too. At my local club you can drink in the stands if you want to. Yon't actually see many people watching the match with a beer in their hand, there are one or two finishing off a pre-match or half-time beer, but you don't see people dashing out to get one beer after the other. In any case, they only sell beer with 3% alcohol.

 

It's in English culture to enjoy a drink too, there's little difference. There will always be some people who can't handle their drink and become aggressive, these individuals just get their fill before kick-off (in Germany too incidentally, most people don't want to spend the match stood in front of a urinal). Preventing people taking their drinks to within a certain distance of the pitch isn't the answer and never was.

 

If the thought of working class people with beers in hand is so frightening to the powers that be, maybe there should be a trial period first.
