Shaun Derry says some Notts County fans got 'too carried away' with super start to season as Chesterfield inflict eighth home defeat

Shaun Derry: "We can only play one way with the players we have at our disposal."

Shaun Derry admitted Notts County's glorious start to the season in League One has skewed expectation levels at Meadow Lane after Chesterfield deepened their troubling home form.

A freak goal from Caolan Lavery condemned the Magpies to a 1-0 defeat as Haydn Hollis' clearance smacked him on the chest and looped over Roy Carroll.

The defeat was the eighth Notts have experienced on home soil this season and their record is in stark contrast to that on the road.

But Notts boss Derry (pictured), whose pre-season aim was just to see progress after avoiding relegation last term, believes the run to the top six had left some fans "getting too carried away".

To be honest and open, he's been making comments like this for awhile but he's been 'careful' with how he says it.

Right now I think we need that togetherness which helped us avoid the relegation last season, I am not remotely afraid currently but a loss on Tuesday (which I expect) will even the scales up a bit. I do think that he shouldn't make any reference to the fans, as enough people told me and expressed wanting him out. This is their honest views but it's surreal, we don't want that.

In my honest opinion Derry's starting to panic, you can see this in his decisions.

Fans will always voice their concerns and opinions, they should be able to do so. It's down to the people listening to weigh up the amount of point made, personally when some fans just rant I turn on my 'mute' mode. Ask @Cobby about the fans screeching on about Derry during the game and came bursting across as we left declaring Derry is a fool.

We can only play how Derry allows and the players perform, if we did well at the start of the season - I don't see why we can't.

Yet I do think SD needs to show some of that 'realism' he mentioned. There's absolutely no signs we can mount a good enough run to make the play-offs, you never know but in my opinion we'll be safe. Mid table, accept defeats and peoples views.

Enough said from here.

Nobody in their right mind wants Derry removed from his post but I do think the pressure is starting to show and cracks are appearing. He turned on a fan behind the dug out on Saturday and repeatedly told him to shut up and get behind the team, this isn't good he needs to develop a thick skin, easier said than done.

He's still the right man for the job in my opinion he is still inexperienced in management and he will make mistakes we should expect that.

Derry needs to take a step back and think things through, he's open to criticised and largely should appreciate that. No fan should abuse him however!

He says we are not good enough to pick up an easy three points the radio reports.

How can we mount a run good enough to make the playoffs? I just don't see, though I agree that he needs to watch what he says and if Tony is right about what Derry did, then he needs to relax.

Not acceptable, we pay the wages.

I don't like saying this but SD is beginning to come over as a bit of a miserable sod.I don't think there were many Notts fans who seriously believed in a top 6 finish. The optimism of a really good season was there, but promotion? There's no doubting SD's sincerity and commitment but he needs to lighten up a bit even when fate kicks him in the teeth.

We had a decent side before Christmas. Now we have an average side at best. I'd take Cassidy over Bajner any day of the week for example......

I agree with him, the squad isn't good enough to challenge for the play-offs. However, his insistence on 'look where we were then, look where we are now' is coming more and more unstuck the more we drop down the league.

If we end up in a relegation scrap, we are in the same position as last season.

I believed we might have been on the verge of something special, there's a difference between quality and getting results.

Yeovil never really had the quality to go up, or the budget, however they did and that is the testament to a hard working squad. Leyton Orient almost became another side, however again Rotherham United is that squad! They've changed their fortunes and quickly, they have put many things in place which helped them progress but each teams different.

Personally I feel I brought into Derry 'optimism' early on, when things started to change so did he but this isn't a negative.

Fans just want to be where we was, everyone I know and speak to see this as 'progression' and it really is. We can dream but keep in touch with where we would like to be. Thing is Derry is still saying we could get back into the play-offs, so perhaps he should accept the situation as mid table himself? It would allow the squad to focus on getting points, rather than worrying about relegation or promotion.

Consistency really, I don't mean this seem to be negative if it's taken that way it's not my aim.

I saw & heard that too. SD sounded really p1ssed off. I was scared for a little (10 secs) while that SD would come up into the stand & remonstrate further with the fan. You may be right Tony that looked like a good sized crack appearing.

Just to be clear I don't think the fan was abusing him personally merely having a good moan about playing one up front and calling it "defensive crap" he didn't direct his moan at Derry in particular.

@tonyhateley What did Derry say?

His interviews and attitudes been quite poor when we have not been doing that well. You can see the difference, yet its pressure nothing more. In Derry we trust!

What's going on right now? All progress made seems to be unraveling. I dont get it all, typical Notts.

He told him to shut up and support the team but he looked really angry.

With the greatest of respect, how do you reason that? Cassidy made Andy white look good. At least Banner has good feet, a good head and positional sense. He needs game time to get match fit and a goal to get his confidence going.

I noticed that Shaun has stopped applauding the fans after games, don't get to away games. When was the last game he did this.

Bajner flatters to deceive. He looks the part but rarely if ever delivers. His miss on Saturday was shocking. There are many many players I'd take ahead of him. I can't believe he's the best we could get our hands on. Ipswich must have been laughing.

he still does but he seems quicker to exit the pitch these days, you probably miss it. i would not say he puts that much effort into it these days tho. keep the fans on side that is what i say.

especially the people who dont feed off the club.
