Why do we let ourselves get so attached to our pets?

Our cat Denzil (Denny to his friends) has been with us for 16 years, recently he had started to go downhill and lost weight dramatically until he was literally just fur, skin and bones, then he started walking into things. Yesterday on the advice of the vet we decided he'd had enough and he was put to sleep.

He is now under our garden in his favourite sunny spot, we felt so sad and I was actually very emotional digging his grave.

RIP Denny

I know exactly how you feel. A mother cat brought us her 2 kittens last July. One was a lovely ginger Tom. We called him Brian. Brian decided he quite liked us and the dog. His nickname was small Brian. Small Brian never seemed to grow and we were of course worried but telling each other, I'm sure he's fine. The day came for him to be neutered. The vet found quite a few tumours in Brian. They were there from birth so that's why he never grew. Brian had to be put to sleep. I still get quite sad when I think of the little man.

Pets add so much to our lives IMO.

Sorry about your loss @tonyhateley.Are you getting another cat? RIP Denzil.

I won't say never but not for a while certainly, he would be hard to replace. Having said that we've always had a cat the garden at our old house was full of dead cats, most of them got run over, we now live in a house that is better for a cat with no road sense as it is not near a main road.

I can't see Mrs. H. lasting long without having a cat but it's a bit soon at the moment.

Sorry about your sad loss @tonyhateley.RIP Denzil. You could perhaps take one of the 10 or so cats that that treat our garden as their own.

if you got a new cat would you be allowed to name it?

We could have a competition on here to suggest a name if Mrs H ever decides to have another cat.I'm not sure we'd come up with a name she'd like though.

Definitely, I'll start with Barry.....

Sorry about the loss, its never the same afterwards and you cannot replace them but you have the memories.

@Dripsey3 thanks for sharing, thats a very sad story.

When people ask what 'American Pie' is about, they're missing the point. The song isn't about the lines themselves - it's about what is between the lines. The song is about what isn't there.
