Stolen goods

A quick question and please give an honest answer, I'm not looking to judge anyone, I'm just curious.

Would you buy something if you suspected it was stolen. Would you be tempted to buy a brand new TV for instance if it was a massive saving on shop price but you suspected it was stolen.

I'll give my opinion and experiences later, don't forget be honest with your answer.

No, I wouldn't purchase something I felt was stolen.

Why? Because that would land me in trouble if it was found on me or within my property. If I buy something second hand, I will generally quiz the owner but there's chances you do purchase stolen items without even knowing, such as games for consoles because all it takes is for the thief to take them to a game shop and part company with the stolen goods.

The question should be would you steal? ;) Again, no I wouldn't.

Probably not now with me being an upstanding member of the family man era, but having strong connections in the various areas of Nottingham (Meadows worked there for 16 years, St Anns Grandma moved there from traditional Sneinton and being Irish and of couse all Irishmen look for a bargain!) I may have accepted gifts in the past which I then may have given a donation towards the generous persons time!

Torrenting on a computer is a difficult one as like it or not it happens so much now it is the normal. I do use torrents and regularly download material, but if the material has a significant cost attached and after trialling it, I will buy the original eg When I tried GTA V for my laptop first, then I went and paid full price for it.

Where is all this going anyway@tonyhateley? Does this mean you have all this time been collecting info on us all as your international man of mystery guise is actually a rouse for the local plod?

I think he's planning to rob us all blind and when we try to describe him, we won't be able too and the man we've met will turn out to be some poor bloke hypnotized into believing he's Tony Hateley from off PON.

No way would I buy if I was suspicious of the seller. As Notts_joe says,it could come back to me as being a receiver of stolen goods.

I think I lied.......

Reason I say this is because, and although I haven't yet..........

There may become a time where by I do........

Purchase something reclaimed from off the police, just like the Club did with their 'grass' growers.

It's unlikely though....

Torrents are stealing from the rich. Not the same.Β

That's actually a good excuse, I wonder if it would bypass our 'Swiss Tony Motor'... Haha!!

I don't actually understand the argument against torrents,

The amount I have spent on games/music as a result of trying them out via a torrent far outweighs the money I would actually have spent if I had to buy it off the bat. Games such as Football Manager, I tried firstly via a torrent and then have bought every single subsequent release.

Music, I listen to them via downloading an album from a torrent. Then if I like them, I have spent a substantial amount of money going to gigs/buying further albums and memorabilia. -Β Spotify now fills this gap for me and I no longer need to download music torrents.Β

You don't get owt for nowt.I was tempted when working and a regular delivery driver was offering all sorts of items at ridiculous prices.(too ridiculous). He said his brother had a shop and bought the items wholesale or slightly damaged stock.I'm glad I didn't fall for his line because once when he was selling stuff on our site a couple of police cars suddenly turned up and arrested him.

@super_ram I'd love to have seen the scenario whereby you did, then ended up having to run from a police chase. It's at this point whereby I would start doing Colin Slater inspired commentary.

How would we know? It's not like some dodgy geezer in some backstreet pub these days, thieves look different.

If I suspected or knew something was stolen, no, I would not but it.Β

@super_ram would have to run fast for the commentary when it gets to the "high dropping balls!"

Right, I have no idea what Torrents are so I will bypass that conversation.

On to stolen goods, I would never, ever buy anything that I believed to be stolen no matter how cheap or how much I could save. There are always victims when someone offers stolen goods, my parents (old age pensioners at the time) were burgled whilst they were on holiday many years ago when they were still alive, it absolutely devastated them, the villains not only cleared their house out but trashed it and did all sorts of unspeakable things. I don't believe they ever really recovered from that, the thought of someone in a pub selling my mum and dads stuff off cheap and someone actually buying it sickens me.

Β

When I used to work for a living one colleague used to regularly bring things into work to sell very cheaply, mainly electrical goods, everyone thought it was great, even management joined in buying the stolen goods, I was considered a misery because I refused to buy anything off him. He also used to bring in fireworks which were stolen and store them under his desk amongst the computer wires, plugs etc., the mind boggles what could have happened if the whole lot had gone up but again this was condoned by the manager of the department, incredible.

I think decent thinking people who buy goods on the cheap don't think about how those goods were obtained, they see a bargain and maybe being short of money are tempted to buy it, so I wouldn't necessary blame them, its the thieves that are the real culprits.

Steps down from soapbox and leaves the room.

On holiday, I have an issue with those market traders who sell electrical - you know the type, the people who get on the microphone and try to do auctions. They said, you can have this item for a reduced price - "I want to save you money" but then you have to wonder, if it's true, why are they not selling it somewhere more suitable. They make it sound like a favour, turn peoples heads and what folks don't realize commonly it's either stolen or broken.

I would never buy something willingly knowing it's stolen, I am smarter than that and it's not the type of person I am.

However, if you purchase items on ebay or things like that. You have absolutely no guarantee it's not been stolen!

Nice share Tony, please take the stage soon for the PONcast. ;)

Eastgate Market is terrible for this. I've lost count of the amount of times I've heard the "I'm trying ti save you money" line, but in actual fact they are selling trash that will never work when you get home anyway.

I have found that as I've got older I've become much more cynical about such things. Ebay is a case in point. I've never purchased anything from there as I genuinely have a mistrust of here the goods came from. I have only ever sold a couple of electrical items on there as a last resort to get the cash from them.

Β

I must be turning into an elderly gentleman as I can remember being in the St Anns Inn on Shelton St, and a bloke used to come in and take orders from the customers, nip into Vic Centre and come back an hour later with said goods!!!

No, I don't remember the last time I purchased something outside of a store or online.

It's a good point about ebay, you don't actually know where the goods have come from, I hadn't actually thought of that, I'm so naive I just thought it was people selling goods they no longer wanted. I suppose car boots is another place to get rid of stolen goods, how often do you see someone with lots of bikes for sale or lots of mowers? If I was buying from a car boot which we have done in the past, I would buy from a nice looking family who looked to be genuinely selling their own stuff.
