Can you speak a foreign language?

Just curious how many multi lingual pies we have in our community.

I assume @DangerousSausage can speak German. I can speak a little French thanks to our many trips to that country.

Anyone else admit to knowing another language?

I confess!

I speak very fluent German and bits and pieces of other languages, although I'm not really proficient in anything else. I'm currently learning Turkish, remember some French and Italian from school and learned some Russian at uni. I also know the Czech word for salt sticks.

Everyone should learn at least one other language. It helps you understand other nationalities, broadens your horizons and helps you understand your own language better.

I used to speak French, German and Italian semi decently.

I preferred Italian myself, seemed easier but now compared to when I was at school it's pretty confusing. My teacher used to laugh when I spoke German, not because I didn't speak it properly but because he said it matched how serious I could be (I would tell him to stop laughing). haha

There's an advert on the Radio of Jose speaking about BT Sports. Quite amusing :P

I'm learning German. I've got the hang of a lot of the words, absolutely useless at the sentence structure/formatting of the language though.

So I can speak cave-man German

I can speak passable French. As I've mentioned on here before our French teacher at school once asked -'How am I supposed to teach you French when you can't even speak English'-referring to my Derbyshire accent.

American English is the most dominant language in the world and has the capability  to grow as new words are introduced, such as broadband - computer - website -

despite the efforts of some countries to protect their language it will eventually seep in as it is with English English. and the majority of people will soon speak a form of English.

so I will just sit back and let the world catch up with me.

I speak German, although I have probably forgotten plenty of it... I am passable in French, Italian, Spanish ( for directions, shopping, eating and minor conversations)... I used to at one stage be able to read and speak just a spattering of Kurdish and at one point somebody thought it wise for me to potentially learn either Russian or Arabic.... that one didn't quite work out... I am glad in some ways, but there could have been so much fun!

Erm... why?!

If you want to travel, having the barrier of only visiting english-speaking countries (first language) is a hell of a way to limit what you see of the world.

I can speak 13 languages, half of which I could quite comfortably hold down a conversation.

@Super_Danny_Allsopp Why not? Leave the lad be, if he prefers countries which only speak English so be it. Many are bilingual in the first place. In fact, I have been to parts of Germany where English is a very common sub language.

Sub, maybe. However, he said first language. So that limits you to USA, UK, Ireland, Aus, NZ and Canada.

South Africa? @liampie mentioned wanting to visit there in a previous thread.

I can name an additional 3 countries which speak English as their first language actually over their mother tongue. Yet again, this is besides the point because I think some people enjoy learning languages, yet others prefer to be themselves.

Each to their own...

Indeed, I just named the ones that came to mind. You can pretty much visit most of the world and get by with using English, I just didn't see why someone would not visit a country if the people there couldn't speak it 100% fluently.
