A trip to the seaside early in the season is never bad. Hope we take a good following.
I can't say I'm too familiar with Weymouth, but they're not cannon fodder and clearly know where the net is. The players need to take fixtures against less glamorous opposition just as seriously as the Wrexhams - then I'm sure we'll bring the points home with us.
Notts finally take the lead. All that was missing was a goal and Cal delivered. Sounds like it was a fantastic free kick. Need to win this. These are the games that decide whether you finish first or in the playoffs.Β
Got to be slightly disappointed with that, strange that we went there last year played terribly, scored a fluke goal and won. Whereas yesterday the performance was better but we only got a point. Thatβs football for you though.
I donβt think we created enough even though we dominated the play for the majority of the game. Will wait to see the highlights in regards to the potential penalty on Ruben but IB thought it shouldβve been given.
Weymouth defended well by the sounds of itΒ and they had a guy in midfieldΒ Mussa who was big, strong and everywhere - Iβm sure weΒ will be tracking him now. Important now that we win on Tuesday, that way the draw wonβt feel like a bad result.
On this day in 1888, the first ever Football League fixtures took place with 10 of the 12 founding clubs facing off against eachother.Β
Although the 1888-89 season wasn't a particularly great one for Notts.Β
Biggest Home Win - Aston Villa 9-1 Notts CountyΒ
Biggest Away Win - Notts County 0-7 PrestonΒ
Highest Scoring Game - Notts County 3-7 Bolton WanderersΒ
Finishing second bottom on "goal average" had it been based on goal difference we would of finished bottom rather than Stoke City.Β
Things slowly got better for Notts though.Β

ThisΒ Saturday at 3pm, the proper leagues (i.e. those not sponsored by van hire companies) get under way. Which can only mean one thing: it's time for the PON prediction league! This is open to EVERYONE - even (and especially!) newcomers to the board. The more the merrier! And here's how it works:
At least two days beforeΒ every matchday I will post a thread withΒ eight matches to predict, two each from the Championship, League One, League Two and (from October) the Conference. You then reply with your predicted scores. The cut-off time for posting is kick-off. At the end of it all I'll then post a table with the current standings.
Scoring system: 3 points for a correct score andΒ 1 for a correct result. So if you predict Oldham to beat Bradford 2-1 and they do, you get 3 points; if Oldham win 1-0, you get 1 point. Each round you can also choose one match as your joker - any points you win for that match are then doubled.
Oh, and the reigning champion is @ARLukomski, so make sure you beat him this time Β Β
The opening fixtures:
Barnsley v Luton Town
Bristol City v Coventry City
Fleetwood Town v Burton Albion
Northampton Town v AFC Wimbledon
Plymouth Argyle v Blackpool
Bradford City v Colchester United
Cambridge United v Carlisle United
Mansfield Town v Tranmere Rovers

Slocombe 5.5Β a slight unease continues with his performances but did produce a match winning save, distribution poor, thought it needs to be quicker
Cameron 6.5 well taken header from the corner. Fouled in build up to Aldershot's 2nd
Lacey 6 So good to see him back. Marked down for passing opportunities lost
Brindley 6 Look assured moving forward, but was withdrawn at halftime following a knock
DKE 6 Energised as usual, though offensive work seemed muted
Taylor 5 Nothing seemed to go right for him
JOB 6 So many forward runs breaking through Aldershot's lines went with passes not spotted
Palmer 6.5 Quiet worker but keeps things ticking
Ruben 6 Caught in possession a lot during the 1st half, better 2nd
Wootton 6.5 Goal a game, that will do
Roberts 6.5 Match winner!!!

I was out and about yesterday (and am not allowed to see the highlights until tomorrow, thanks BT), but it sounds like quite the thriller. Delighted we won obviously, and coming back from behind shows character, but I'd have found a clean sheet more encouraging. The main thing is that we won - beating the teams that aren't in the running for promotion needs to become a habit.
Thoroughly enjoyable second half once we reverted to a back four, put Roberts out wide and brought Mitchell on. I think Mitchell could be a very good signing, once he learns to make the right decisions. Roberts has to play wide for me, he seems a bit lost inside and is nowhere near as effective.
Full credit to Aldershot as well for trying to win a game of football fairly.Β I thought Andrews took both of his goals well after totally scuffing a couple of chances earlier.
No catering facilities at all in the Family stand this week, we had to go over to the main stand in order to get a drink before the game.
Disappointed to go 2-1 down to them, but the fight to get the win was good.
I thought Roberts, Rodrigues and Lacey all did very well.
Saturday is your latest chance for PON prediction league glory - the rules are the same: post your predictions here by 3pm on Saturday, and don't forget your joker!

14 hours ago, Feral Fox said:Well worth the point tonight imo. Resolute defending as a team. Cameron steadied the ship superbly. Massive improvement from Saturday. Hopefully now the Torquay game has gone, heβll produce like he did tonight. Plus the insightful running into the middle helped beef up in the centre of the parkβ¦which is the weakest point I think. Francis isnβt convincing me so far, but prepared to give the benefit of the doubt.Β
R and R had no impact at all. Hope they rest up and are rearing to go by Saturday.Chicksen came in and did well. Again.
Great header by Woots. That goal was Premiership worthy. Heβll be attracting attention sooner rather than later.
Slocombe. Poor again. I said pre season he was a weak link and the mistakes so far reinforces the point. We wonβt change the keeper, but I do hope he settles and becomes a bit more dominant in his box.
Β
And as a parting thoughtβ¦ban towels on the touch line. So much time wasted (which I know probably worked in our favour in the end!) and itβs not a good look waiting for him to grab his towel everyΒ Β throw in. We dealt well with the long throw ins, but I suspect other teams may give goals away because of it. Itβs a weapon so I suspect that was the reason he was signed for them!
Slocombe won't command his box if he was 10ft tall

Unfortunately true...
1 hour ago, allardyces tash said:Mistakes will happen at our level, that is one thing some fans can't comprehend.
Both teams have gotten off to a good start, a draw for Notts isn't bad. If anything it puts Wrexham in an awkward as they will be expected to win with the signings they've made. The draw shows Notts can compete with good teams and handle heavy pressure. All of which is useful in order to improve.
I'll take a draw.
A good point. When you look at the stuff stacked against us last night...their first home game (which makes last weekends point a poor one!) with fans in, TV cameras, hollywood owners in attendance for first time, bucket loads of cash thrown at players and lots of them on display...
Mistakes will happen, just depends on the threat from it. Eg. JoB was a bit messy last night and gave a few silly passes away and occasionally put us in danger. Slocombe on the other hand, he should be better than the two mistakes in two games which have led to goals. If it had been a young up and coming player, then fair nuff. He is supposed to be the mainstay keeper. And as mentioned above, no commanding of his area unfortunately.
its a good point, i dont think the blame falls solely on slocombe but the defence too.
i know hes a good keeper and things will improve, not sure if people are obsessed with brooks or just pointing the finger but nobody can single him out. notts played a completive game and gave a good account of themselves.
Slocombe - 3 - Oh dear. Howler a game at the minute.
DKE - 6 - Looked like a dear in the headlights first 20. Settled after.
Rawlinson - 7 - Handled the aerial bombardment well.
Cameron - 8.5 - As per Rawlinson, but with a fantastic assist.Β
Brindley - 7.5 - Looks so at home in that role. Defended well.
Taylor - 7 - Put in a lot of running up and down that left wing. A lot better defensively than I was expecting, with a couple ofΒ minor lapses in concentration.
Francis - 6 - Game seemed to frantic for him, but got up to speed eventually.
Palmer - 7.5 - Class act again. Even under pressure, just seems to make the right choice, repeatedly.Β
JOB - 6.5 - Worked tirelessly as always.Β
Wootton - 8 - What a header. Makes that look so easy when it's anything but.Β
Mitchell - 7 - Was actually impressed with his touch and running the lines.
Rodrigues - 6.5 - Never really affected the game a deal.
Roberts - 6 - No real impact.
Chicksen - 7 - Defended well and we didn't suffer from the lack of height.

Well that was an anticlimax. At least we didn't lose. A good result on Monday night and it'll be quickly forgotten.
I only listened on the radio, but for all the possession we had after the sending off, we didn't seem to test their keeper much. Of course the timewasting from Torquay was annoying and at times ludicrous, but let's be honest with ourselves - if the roles had been reversed, we'd have wanted our players to do exactly the same. We brought it on ourselves by falling behind to an unnecessary goal.
I was a bit confused by Charlie Slater saying "the man" in the second half, until I realised he was referring to Nemane. Maybe I'll just call him The Man in future to avoid confusion.
Good performance by both teams, that made an exciting game in all fairness.
Torquay came out looking to score early on, Their build up play at times was very good but lacked the end product.
Notts started sluggish and lacked directness, but people should understand it's simply due to how high Torquay pressed. The main issues in the first half, was the high balls to DKE - it'sΒ ridiculous and anyone who genuinely blames Dion for this issueΒ needs to get their heads checked.
I felt the chances Notts created in the first half were actually much better than Torquay, yet they are few and far between. It was a decent first half, I don't think anyone can really say it was awful or rubbish.
I'm starting to believe that the signings and, win over Barnet is starting to cloud some peoples' judgement.
Much like Don Masson's comments at half-time has got people all in arms over us playing the ball out from the back, it was difficult for me to hear exactly what was said, but I made the jist of it. I just wasn't sure if Masson was trying to claim Slocombe couldn't hit a free kick to our striker - if so, this is nonsense.
In the second half, Ian Burchnall actually addressed some issues from the first half.
However, I think it's completely unfair to blame DKE for his performance because he did fine with the ball at his feet.
Nemane made a huge difference, but he needs to avoid doing to much. I mean when it works, it's exciting, but it does seem wasteful when theirs better options available.
O'Brien seems revived and keen to play a bigger role in the squad, he was a real bright point when he came on. His movement and ability to get forward, it made a huge difference.
With Roberts and Nemane pulling strings over on the right side, it forced Rodrigues to drift to the left and I think he would've been more effective if he could have stayed central. O'Brien went to the left often enough, but Chicksen didn't really support O'Brien. He seemed more interested in taking players on and, getting the ball into the box.
Chicksen played okay for me, he did some exciting things, but largely I feel he could've worked better with others.
The decision-making wasn't always ideal from Notts, I do agree at times it could've been much better, but the game was good.
Torquay knew the pressure would mount on them. They slowed down and took to dropping to the ground to kill any momentum or simply to hold onto their lead. Their keeper should've been booked earlier than he did, and still managed to time waste beyond a point where he could get away with it in my eyes.
I got the impression the referee didn't want to make any more bookings after a certain point with Torquay, as he looked to hold out and 6 minutes for all the antics was short. Yet, I accept it because a draw isn't the worst result.
Notts played some exciting football in the second half, Burchnall needs to make sure we maintain the same level of intensity and directness.
If a team decides to park every player in their penalty area, we need to draw them out with the creative players that we have - Roberts did well in this regard, he tried to draw people onto him, and it often created Nemane time to get a cross in. Unfortunately, Nemane's crosses was hit-and-miss. This needs to be improved, but I don't think people suggesting we should shoot from outside the box understand anything about football.
You've got to have a clear target, or see a way for your ability to get something in on goal - this won't happen with 3-5 bodies all in your way.
Honestly, I left happy and felt we could've won - yet I will always take a point in games like this.
It could've easily turned in favour of Torquay, although Notts really should've made the most of them having 10-men. I don't think it's worth criticising and, moaning because it's very early in the season. Just because we won Barnet 5-0, it doesn't mean we'll batter every side [unlike people on social media seems to think].
We were too predictable at times. Right to left is all well and good, but we all knew what was going on and who the next pass was to. Sometimes, you have to put the ball in the mixer to keep them guessing and we never tried that, until Chicksen did it and we scored. Strangely, we never tried again.
Very frustrating game in the end. Torquay are a one-dimensional side (lump it to Wright and hope for the knock-ons), who time wasted but ran themselves into the ground. Ref should have punished them for the antics but bottled it because of the red already given. I see yesterday they were thumped 4-0... probably as a direct consequence of the effort they put into defending against us, or the cramp - if you are to believe it.Β
