Gary Johnson: Yeovil Town's Nathan Smith has bruises to prove Notts County challenge.

Yeovil Town’s Nathan Smith has the bruises to prove he had been hurt by a hefty challenge at Notts County, according to manager Gary Johnson.

The athletic full back was felled in the first half by Magpie Gary Jones, referee Stuart Attwell harshly deeming the challenge to be worthy of a straight red card.

Although the official acted before Smith had received lengthy treatment, he was subsequently booed whenever he touched the ball thereafter, with the away dugout also receiving a rough ride from a boisterous crowd.

Smith has since been subjected vile abuse on Twitter with individuals labelling him a “cheat” and a “disgrace”, with some even hoping he receives a career-ending injury. His Wikipedia entry has even been altered to document his role in proceedings.

Jones’s red card has since been rescinded on appeal and Johnson said his Jamaican left-footer had the character to weather the backlash.

“Everybody that understands football that saw it realises that if you look at the pictures of our technical area, none of us threw our hands up in the air or got involved,” said Johnson.

“Smithy was obviously hurt. Judging by the mark on his leg, he was obviously hurt, but none of us were brandishing imaginary red cards.

“If a player’s hurt, he’s hurt and it’s up to the referee to do what he wants to do. He (Smith) wasn’t trying to con the referee by any stretch of the imagination.

“If the crowd decide to take it out on the player, he’s got to be doubly professional and to be honest he was. He didn’t make any comment or say anything back, he just got on with the game.

“It was important that he and the team stood up and played cleverly – one mistimed tackle could have been disastrous.”

Johnson continued: “When people are disappointed after losing a game that they were hoping to win, little things always come up through their disappointment.

“I felt that we deserved to win the game with the way we played, whereas their manager felt that they deserved to win despite going down to ten men - differing opinions. We have had a good look at the review and the DVD and we’re very happy with our performance.”

I find this quite funny, it's like someone telling a teacher after being caught bullying that they was self defending themselves to avoid being told off, despite the teacher having seen and witnessed it.

The bruises could have been caused by him flopping to the ground or rolling around. LOL

Thought?

Perhaps time to rethink the next time he floors himself?

He could not have been that badly hurt, he got up quick enough once Jones had been dismissed and ran around like rabbit for the rest of the game.

What is a bruise in professional sport anyway? Man up Nathan Smith.

I admire Derry for being honest but safe.

The yeovil manager is like all the rest, moaning but they got the points. If only he could keep silent!

It was laughable how he kept falling over and rolling round every time someone came near him, he was obviously trying to get someone sent off, if that's the way Johnson likes his team to play that's up to him but hopefully it will come back on him one day.

Going Down!!!

They might not have been bruises, they might have been mud spots where the chatty get had been rolling.

Hopefully somebody will take Yeovil and Mr Johnson to the cleaners (dry)

If causing bruises was a red card offence, at the end of every game only the keepers would be left!

You know when a team are struggling when they play to get others sent off, very very poor tactics

he only stayed up when he was able to go pass, time and time he again he dived.

there was many near the touchline because when one of our players went to clear the ball out, he would just drop and roll. we had a couple of free kicks because of this and other yeovil players did the same. dirty cheats!

Perhaps he kept collapsing in agony due to the terrific pain of his injuries?

Wonder how many bruises Michael Petrasso had from all the fouls on him, before Gary got sent off. Bet he's covered in 'em.

Probably threw himself down the stairs.

Silly sod.

That's what his wag tells him to say to the boss! ;)

There is no correlation between whether he was hurt/has bruises etc. and whether it was a foul.

I'm happy to believe he was hurt, and that it wasn't a foul or a red card.
