Cambridge United (A)

We face another ex manager on our next game. Shaun Derry is settling in as Cambridge manager.Β

Cambridge are 17th in the table (3 places below Notts). They have 23 points from 19 games. They have scored 27 goals (one more than Notts) and conceded 30 goals (3 more than Notts). Their recent form hasn't been great. They did manage a 1-0 win at home againstΒ Basingstoke in the FA Cup but that hardly inspires confidence. They have won only 1 of their last 4 league games and that was a 4-2 win away to Morecambe last night which is impressive to be fair.Β

SD seems to have settled for a straight forward 4-4-2 formation. From what I've seen and that isn't much I'll admit, SD has them playing the ball on the ground. That will suit Notts just fine.Β

Their main threat is Barry Corr. He has 9 league goals. He was on the bench last night so I don't know if he'll start. Williamson & Donaldson both scored last night so they may get the nod ahead of Corr again. Harrison Dunk is their main supplier. He has 6 assists so far.Β

This is a game I think we should be winning. Cambridge are in transition and are there for the taking. I'll go for 2-1 to Notts. Stead and Noble.Β

It really depends how they play the ball on the ground, if they're remotely physical - that is enough to cause the defence problems but as a whole, the confidence of last night should surely be something to encourage our players?

The difference from previous games compared to last night, Notts actually passed the ball around with a direct approach. It looked like they was confident, that they had a purpose and generally unafraid to move into areas which had opposition players occupying ground in abundance. We just cut throw them like they didn't exist, yet I don't expect a repeat against Cambridge.

If we attack, that should be more than enough provided we get shots on target.

It would be nice if we could keep up with the momentum but it's progression based, I fully expect the occasion to make it somewhat difficult. Derry will be keen to set his squad up correctly and have them play to our weaknesses - it's another game I just cannot call but despite yesterday's win, I am just not confident. My heart says this could be goalless.

I don't think we was that bad one goal took a huge deflection of Edwards other goal should have been a 3-4 man wall.

Β

I think also when McLeod plays up top with stead despite McLeod looking lazy he takes a lot off the defence with him.

Jon steads goal shows this Campbell gets the ball both defenders get round McLeod as they all see him as the danger man which gives stead space so that works in our favour toΒ

The second goal should have been cleared before the deflected shot. Too hesitant. The defence needs to be more aggressive. The 1st goal was a case of everyone leaving it for everyone else, including the Barnet players, so we'll give the defence the benefit of the doubt on that one.Β

Yeah but will Notts go into hiding? A good performance followed by stuttering or slowness.

Cambridge will be up for this, I think the game could go either way and most likely it will go to whoever wants it or avoids making mistakes. At this level it is all we can expect from the game.

I think we'll do well this weekend, bout time we went on a run of wins. Plus our away form as to improve and why not do it against SD, there's no sentiment in football.Β

If Izale could bag just one goal it would be good for his confidence, when he arrived he seemed certain to prove my comments wrong about him being the goalscorer we require but now he's very much struggling.

I would like to see us go for it away from home, it's there where our results have to pick up and as someone told me yesterday - the Christmas period will define our season. So, we will either turn a corner and push on or things will stutter. Personally I think we are confined to 8th-12th now but winning Cambridge and many of the attractive features could turn things around.

Notts looked more aggressive and up for it last night, hopefully that will continue on Saturday.

Can we put a repeat performance in so soon? I hope so myself.

I am wary about the changes Moniz may make, I do not like commenting before hand about scores because his baffling squad selections can change all this. I do think we will be able to come away with a win.

Unless Cambridge get the better of us.

We do have a squad capable of winning the majority of games but something needs to give.

I am in the same boat as those who cannot see where the next win will come from. This is more down to tactics and I also would like to echo that it is our away performances which need improving. We can play scrappy at home and win, yet it just does not work at away games.

Notts XI - Carroll, Smith, Snijders, Noble, Hewitt, Campbell, Burke, Audel, Edwards, McLeod, Sheehan.

Notts subs - Loach, Valencic, Milsom, Hollis, Sprockel, Swerts, Murray.

Thoughts?

hope it's a 441 with Burke sat behind McLeod but looking at the base of it more a 451 which hasn't worked before.

I know Stead picked a knock up I'd be tempted to maybe play Campbell next to McLeod but more then enough attacking players thereΒ

I am surprised by the changes made by Cambridge, it would seem its because they want to inject quality into their play and I wouldn't be surprised if this is because of how fast we can fade when we struggle.

Hughes and Corr are quality players for them.

Lets see how things go.

I can't wait to see the highlights, I had gone down stairs briefly and I could hear the melee but we have quickly fallen apart.

We need to stop this and cut it out, it's costing us points.

I accept mistakes, yet despite the out cry from the 'awarded' goal - why didn't Carroll use his experience and play it smart? I'm not being funny or blaming him, yet I think when we realise the bigger picture. We may stop avoiding giving games a way, as I write this they have just scored again! I am sure people will blame the referee and this might be rightly so but I just want our club to wake up!!

normality is resumed I'm not gonna give you all my views you know what I'm like when I'm angry so I'm sure you all have a idea tho.

Β

Sorry but beating Barnet has proved nothing they were terrible and to lose to a side who were below us.

Hate to say it we ain't going anywhere above 14th this year end ofΒ
