What are your experiences of tipping. Do you tip for services received, if so who do you tip? Have you ever had a job where you received a tip?

I generally leave a tip if I’ve been to a restaurant with waiter service but not if it’s a place where you order at the bar and give a table number.

On the cruises we have been on tips are charged to your bill to save you the bother but at £7 per passenger per day it works out a fair bit of money depending how long the cruise is. If you prefer you can have the tips taken off your bill and tip personally.

Any thoughts on tipping?

i only tip if the service has gone beyond someones job, otherwise i dont think its really warranted. the only exception is if the person is friendly or i have seen them do a nice act for someone else.

I think you are forced to tip in American? I think its better the way we operate, customer service in the UK is very poor IMO.

I never tip, I would rather give my money to beggars who are drinking alcohol.

The difference in the USA, the waiters etc rely on tips to make their salary...i.e. the restaurant owners pay such staff very little as a basic salary. I far rather have the UK slant of restaurant owners paying their staff a good wage. Any tips given then is a result of exceptional service

I believe you also have to tip a percentage of what your order costs in America, at least a couple of people have told me this.

Having worked in hospitality and the catering trade for a considerable number of years, I never tip. In my first job as a waiter I had management take my tips and even gave me warnings for keeping my own tips. In another unnamed restaurant, the general manager refused to allow 'pot washers' have any share of the tips raised and all the tips people got went to all the front staff.

The Chefs complained and they ended up taking the majority between them, so the smaller jobs never received anything.

In the same environment but working in the hotel staff was allowed to keep the tips, yet you had to declare what it was and anything over £10 had to be rejected otherwise you would get a disciplinary strike.

It's very common for tips to end up in other peoples pockets these days, it all depends where but you would be surprised how widely common this thieving behaviour is. @Magic magpie should be able to tell some tales like this himself, as a chef who's spent most of his life working in the trade.

I don't tip people, not even if they go beyond their job description. I just thank and praise them to the management/managers.

PS. I also once gave a £5 tip to an elderly waitress in the Wheelhouse Pub in Wollaton, she made a fuss of Jake on his birthday and fetched candles etc. I asked her before I tipped her if the money would go to her, she said it did but it ended up in a gar for the kitchen staff. I'll never tip for these reasons, I'd rather praise and be kind.

As I am a waitress, it does not really bother me if I get a tip or not anymore, as it gets put into a pot and at the end of the shift and gets split between the people who was working that shift. Before hand, I used to keep all my tips in my pocket and at the end of the shift we had to count it up and give 25% to the kitchen. (Some customers did not agree with this and some did). 

But, as a customer I hardly ever tip if at all but on this occasion me and @ARLukomski did. We went to pizza hut, and our waiter was so nice and very patient especially with me having questions about the food, taking my time reading the allergy book and also me noticing a mistake in there.

We find that the staff on our cruises are absolutely fabulous and will do anything for you to make sure you have a lovely holiday, they are mainly from India or Philippines, I don't think they get paid a great deal so because of their friendly, helpful attitude we generally don't mind tipping for the exceptional service they give. The tips are added to our bill and shared between waiting staff, bar staff, kitchen staff and cabin stewards. 

Does anyone tip barbers or hairdressers? My wife gives her hairdresser a present at Christmas, I have my hair cut at home by the wife but I don't give her a tip.

I have never thought about tipping anyone, I guess its something to consider but I would would if the person I wanted received the money.

Tipping and paying for items here is a nightmare.

You have to add tax to the prices and then tip if you eat out, so bring your wallets filled with cash if you ever visit the states.
