Does Big Sam have it right when he slams modern-day ‘brainwashed’ football? Sam Allardyce slams modern-day ‘brainwashed’ football and praises surprise club for long-lost tactic WWW.GBNEWS.COM Legendary former Premier League manager Sam Allardyce has lambasted...2 points

I must admit I find the slow build up from the back pretty boring, the continual passing around by the defenders and goalie, then when it goes forward into midfield someone passes it back again and it gets passed around by the defenders once more. I’d much rather see exciting fast flowing football that gets you on the edge of your seat.2 points

The problem we have is that home grown players, who at a different time would have been good enough to play in either the Championship or Premier League are now having to go further down the league pyramid to find work. Also, home grown Head Coaches, coaches & assistant coaches are having to do the same thing to get work I personally don't think that it is a good thing for our domestic game and our national teams that this is happening.. A coach who coaches a team in league 2 still has to be as good , as if not better than a coach who coaches in the PL. The coach is still trying to do the same job no matter what league the team is in. Finish as high as possible. Dan Crowley is good enough to have played in the old first division, when most of the players were home grown, & first division teams were still winning European Cups.2 points

"Overseas" is a vastly bigger talent pool than just the UK, you're inevitably going to find better players and managers because of the sheer numbers. And Premier League clubs are wealthy enough to cherry-pick the best. Whether that's what they SHOULD be doing is a different matter. Of course we need to provide incentives for clubs to promote domestic talent, otherwise PL clubs will just assemble global dream teams and our young players won't get a look-in, hindering their development. The knock-on effect for smaller Scottish clubs is that PL clubs are taking a closer look at young Scottish players and helping themselves.2 points

You are absolutely right @Wheelbarrow repair man We've seen it at Notts, they've seen it at Southampton, trying to play the ball out from the back despite being in a dangerous situation. Why can't they do the sensible thing by booting the ball upfield or just kicking the ball into touch, or pass it back to the goalie so he can clear the ball to safety. I agree with Sam that direct football can be much more exciting than the slow slow build up that we see with modern football. And going more direct can put opponents on the wrong foot because they possibly don't know how to deal with it.2 points

Of Course he's Right @Robbie. Modern Day Football is Brainwashed So is the FA and a Large Number of Fans. Who Can't get it into their Heads that their Attitude will bring about the Death Knell of the Game We follow, all that Will Happen is Big Sam will be slammed as a Dinosaur who Doesn't understand the "Modern Game" and Big Sam's probably Forgotten More About Football, the his Distractors will Ever Know.2 points

We agree to differ @Robbie If that was the case, clubs will be playing more English players as they would probably be cheaper. The one consequence of so many foreign players, the English talent has been cascaded down the leagues. In all my years of supporting Notts, the quality of EFL2 now is the highest its ever been!2 points

@Piethagoram "the best talent, most of which is from overseas" I beg to differ on that one. There are dozens of home grown players that are very talented & should be playing in the PL, but in my opinion are being held back, just like the home grown managers are.2 points

I am very disappointed by the appointment, not because he's German but because I don't rate him as a manager. Thomas Tuchel should have been given longer at Chelsea, so it's not that, but I just don't see him as being a strong candidate for an international team. Danny Mills makes an interesting point about Tuchel missing two games before he takes over. I don't know if he has commitments currently, but I think it's negative that a manager doesn't want to jump into his position with games before - something which would help him in the longer term you would imagine? Gareth Southgate will prove to his doubters, just why he managed to have such success with England despite not being considered the level required going in, and massively being disrespected for what he did achieve during his time. There will always be negative, and mardy "fans" in football, but I do think appointing from within the U21s is a good way to go about it. I had no issue personally giving Lee Carsley longer, as I think his knowledge of playing coming up would be something useful in the long run. Anyone appointed is likely to need time, and might not be the best candidate, but it's what they bring to the team which gives me potential in their ability. Tuchel is very unknown at the international level, and I am very doubtful he will get the best out of us. As it's been stated, there's not a wide range of good candidates, but I just don't feel we had to rush.2 points

It will be a Tough Match for the Magpies on Saturday. In My Opinion Stuart Maynard has to keep his eye on the Wimbledon Coach. Great Uncle Bulgaria who's wisdom and plotting will have a tough Game Plan to try and Combat the Notts Attacking force of Jatta and Didzy. Tobermory a handyman type of Player who can make things happen and Change things around Quickly. Orinoco could be a Player Notts could take advantage of, particularly when he decides to have a Quick 40 Winks. Wellington a Quiet Player who can suddenly burst into action, could prove to be a Handful. Tomsk An Old Fashion Center Forward Big Brave and Tough, could cause the Notts Defense all Kinds of Problems. Especially From Dead Ball Situations. Bungo A No Nonsense Captain and Leader. Madame Cholet. The Teams Nutritional Guru, who is Bound to have the Wimbledon Players in Tip Top Condition. Stuart Maynard and his Staff Must Also Be Aware of the the Line in the Wimbledon Song. Defenses They Don't Notice Us, They Never See Under Their Noses A Womble May Be. I Take The Magpies To Win By The Odd Goal.2 points

Seems a bit of a strange appointment to me given his talent for falling out with people. At least no one can accuse the FA of appointing a "yes man" this time! It's also a bit sad that we're having to appoint from abroad again. Have English coaches so little to offer? As coaching the England team is very different from being a club manager, I'd have been happy with a "no name" coach who knows the setup and can organise and inspire the players. Whether Carsley would have been an option I don't know. But of course I hope TT does well!2 points

It seems counter-intuitive but the article makes an important point - as clubs can no longer recruit players aged 16 and 17 from the EU, they're increasingly looking north of the border instead. Some of those young players will no doubt benefit from the superior facilities and coaching on offer, while many more will fall by the wayside. And of course Scottish clubs are finding it more and more difficult to hold on to young talent. All the familiar disadvantages of the academy system - in which the big clubs hold all the cards and can entice youngsters for a relative pittance - come into play, Scottish clubs are just more exposed to it than they were before.2 points

Game 12 - The Wombles (H) Team: AFC Wimbledon Date: 19/10/2024 Where: Meadow Lane What line-up should Stuart Maynard opt for? What will be the key areas for the Magpies to get a victory? Hi all, back in 2010 I purchased 1 of 100 commemorative bottles of whisky celebrating 100 years at Meadow Lane. It's in the loft for the grandchildren. Has anyone else got one, there were 100. Has anyone opened it? Is it a decent dram? I've done a search online and there's no record out there.1 point

I completely agree with you @Wheelbarrow repair man why on Earth would he want to go back to all the stress of being a manager of a top football club again at 82 years old, for goodness sake enjoy your retirement Fergie, go on a cruise, play with your grandchildren, tend your garden, just do whatever you enjoy in the time you have left. I can never understand people who want to work after retirement age I couldn’t wait to retire.1 point

Spot on @DangerousSausage @Wheelbarrow repair man The Premier League is sold around the world, because the world audience want to see the best talent, most of which is from overseas. That's why the "product" is in demand and television audiences around the world pay the big bucks to the Premier League. Unfortunately the Premier League kept the 100% of overseas television rights, rather than proportion it down , like the English television deal, where the allocated sum is dividend down as 80% championship, 12% EFL1 8% EFL2 This is , with due respect, a ludicrous comment "Another Foreign Coach who almost ruined an English Players Career Pep Guardiola, look what he did to Joe Hart Destroyed the Lad's Confidence, repeatedly loaned him out and Why? Because he struggled playing the Sweeper Keeper Role. " Pep soon realised that Joe Hart didn't fit in the sweeper keeper role, so effectively got rid. I am still surprised Slocombe is still at Notts, as he is no way good enough as a sweeper keeper too. Perhaps what is telling Burnley signed Hart for only £3.5m. One can say his Man City career had been seemingly littered with errors. Even Mancini had serious questions over Hart. Just to reiterate, the article is in the Sports section of The Herald. Ireland own football clubs, are also faced with the same dilemma, as the old existing Treaty with the UK, allows for continual free movement between UK and Ireland.1 point

@Wheelbarrow repair man At the end of the day the FA just wanted a big name didn't they. Whether he's the best coach is open to conjecture.1 point

I think you should appoint Harry Kewell as your manager, things are bound to improve then.1 point

@Robbie Manchester United Can't Pay Him what England are supposedly Doing £5 Million A Year. That sort of Money wouldn't Reflect back Very Well on Jim Ratcliffe, after all the Cuts He's Making At Old Trafford.1 point

I don't get it when people say that the best Head coaches / Managers are in the PL. Phil Parkinson of Wrexham looks like he may have three promotions on the bounce when this season ends, & yes his Club has money, but the big six in the PL have 20 times or more finance than Wrexham. So what's wrong with Phil Parkinson being considered, or for that matter, any other Head Coach in the lower leagues?1 point

I'm surprised Tuchel didn't take the job. I think the Head Coach role at Man U might have suited him much better rather than the England role.1 point
-
I am surprised that he's been appointed because he doesn't seem the sort of chap that will accept being a yes man to the FA. I've read up on him, & he seems to be a strict disciplinarian & can be divisive too. I read in the spectator that he had bust ups with players & higher ups. So it will be interesting how the FA's relationship with him will develop & how the England players warm to him. There is no doubt that he is an excellent coach, & a successful one at that. He knows all the England players well, & will be familiar with many top players in the PL Now he's been chosen I think we need to all get behind him & give him a chance. World Cup qualification will be his focus, then hopefully winning the tournament.1 point

Oh Dear Oh Dear Oh Dear. Poor Choice it Doesn't Matter what the Guy has done at Club Level, being a National Side Coach is a whole Different Ball Game. And Coaching the England Team and Being German is Going to throw up a load of Unique Problems, some of which I've touched on, on here. If like it's been stated Tuchel isn't a Yes Man, then he's Not Going to last long with the FA, plus the Fact one of his Major Problems at Chelsea was he couldn't Handle Prima Donna Players, then he's going to have his work cut with some of England's so called Stars. Eddie Howe should have been Chosen. It's a Dark Day when an Englishman isn't picked to lead his Country. Sean Dyche is another Manager who like Howe had taken an unfancied Team (in his case Burnley) up into the Heady Heights of the Premier League and like Howe Knows how to Mold Players Together and Get Them Playing As A Team, something the Present England Team are in Dire Need Of. I await the Media Headlines when Tuchel's England Team Suffer It's First Defeat.1 point

@Wheelbarrow repair man Even though the defence have improved no end since last season, Notts are still conceding goals. If Stuart is seeking continuous improvement, it should follow that he will surely try to improve the defence even more. It could mean replacing Macari with McDonald seeing that McDonald is regarded as an excellent centre back.1 point

The more options there are, the higher the chance that one of them will make the grade. I am hopeful that this will be the generation that starts to progress from the academy, through the youth ranks to the first team. It’s exciting to see them signing new deals with the club, and the brief glimpses of them during pre-season are encouraging for the future.1 point

Callum McGregor has done superbly; I am glad he has enjoyed success at Celtic and that he managed to avoid being sold. I think he is a player that has put his own mark on the club, and watching him play with his smile brings back memories of him here.1 point

It’s great to see so many flourishing youngsters sign. I do have the feeling that Luke Williams will start to implement some into the first team in the right circumstances. With 7 substitutes compared to 5, it’s much easier, and if we are in cruise control in some of the games, then that makes things easier and tempting to throw on a youngster for the last 20 minutes.1 point
-
After what I would say was a successful pre-season from the perspective of the young players, with two remaining friendlies, it shows that the club has faith in them to continue their careers. I am delighted with this news and wish each of them well. I hope they all make the most of their time being involved with our setup. Just because the likelihood of being a regular for Notts is slim, it does not mean they cannot move on when the time is right and drop down to work their way back up.1 point

I would prefer to focus on PON, but I have considered joining. I wasn’t aware until recently that you had to have an Instagram account, so it’s unlikely I will until that changes. I just hope some of the idiots on Twitter don’t make their way over and ruin it there.1 point

I had hoped for a back that wasn’t entirely white, but the teaser seems to show that it will be. I think it might have a bit too much white for my liking; stripes never look good on a lot of white. They look better when they’re equal or slightly different.1 point

I’m hoping Luke Williams brings in a centre-back. If he can double up as a left wing-back, that would suit us. I know we have Richard Brindley, but he’s better out wide for me.1 point
-
I don’t know, I’m worried that only Kyle Cameron will sign. I wonder if Jim O’Brien will have thought he could retire and spend more time with his family. He is a great player and a leader, but maybe he feels he has done enough for the club. I hope he stays but I respect his decision either way.1 point

Sam Slocombe seems to receive some harsh criticism that previous keepers managed to avoid. I don’t understand how it’s easy to defend Ross Fitzsimons while blaming Slocombe when he works his gloves off to keep us in games.1 point
-
Chesterfield did well, I thought they approached the start exactly how a team should. It's lucky for us that they grew tired after chasing the game but Notts did well to get back into the game twice. The penalties were something I didn't want to watch with my own eyes, very stressful trip to Wembley but worth the outcome.1 point
-
Who cares wether we played well or not. We didn't but got the job done.1 point
-
I'm both surprised and not surprised at the same time. I voted for Sam Slocombe, who has had to work hard at times this season. While it's true that when Notts plays well the keeper has little to do, there have been spells where Slocombe has single-handedly kept games a win or a draw. Very rarely has he been at fault for conceding. He's a solid player and deserves recognition for his efforts.1 point

Well, that’s just peachy. Hey, we’re all about collecting trophies. And by trophies, I mean their tears. So do not screw up on Sunday and let them score on you like it’s prom night - you don’t want to play catch-up with them. Unless it’s ketchup. Then I’m in.1 point

I prefer to vote anonymously, but I would be happy with any of the six listed candidates being named Player of the Season. They have all had outstanding performances and have contributed greatly to the team's success.1 point

The Hillsborough disaster was a dark day that affected not only those at the match but people across the United Kingdom. It's tragic to think that so many deaths could have been avoided if common sense and care were taken. Allowing fans onto the pitch when it became clear that there were too many in the stands could have saved lives.1 point
