What's Behind the Delay to Appoint a New Head Coach?

Featured Replies

It looks like Steffen HΓΈjer is becoming a real option. Right now, he seems a much more likely choice than bringing Luke Williams back. HΓΈjer’s work with young players might be a key part of it. It could explain why the club is shaping the coaching setup the way it is.

Seems very plausible to me. In which case we'll find out next week at the earliest - Denmark are in the quarter finals after winning their group and play France on Sunday evening.

Reading steffen HΓΈjer's wiki & what he is doing as Manager of the Denmark under 21s who he's guided to the Euro under 21 Championship quarter finals, & with the opportunity of going further, I would be very happy to see him as Head Coach at Notts.

But are Notts really in the running? If they are it would be a great capture.

Would the club really take this long if they'd already made the decision after the AFC Wimbledon match to part ways with Stuart Maynard? It seems likely the board knew what they were going to do before the game, depending on the result.

It wouldn’t make much sense to wait this long for someone who’s out of work. That’s why it feels more likely that the new head coach is still under contract elsewhere. If that’s the case, I’d like it to be Steffen HΓΈjer. I was hoping for someone with experience at this level, but managing Denmark’s under-21s suggests he knows what he’s doing. There must be something about him.

Could the restructuring of our footballing department mean that the new head coach will focus on developing young players and improving them technically and less about picking the team and tactics. Allowing for an assistant to help with team selection and tactics. Steffen HΓΈjer would certainly fit the bill.

There are a few reasons floating about, and we’re all guessing what seems most likely. There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s good to have some ideas about why it’s taken so long. If we’ve actually got the Danish Under-21s manager, then the announcement could be quite something.

The longer we await an announcement of the new head coach the more it seems likely they know who it is but can't yet announce it. Add to the fact that the statement released when Stuart Maynard was sacked said "our work is well underway to identify the correct coaching team" could possibly indicate it's Steffen HΓΈjer. If not him someone else whose contract will end in the near future. Whoever it is, lets hope we are pleasantly surprised!

I'd love to see Denmark’s U21s give France a good thrashing. That kind of result is always fun to watch. At the same time, it would be good to get some proper news about who the next head coach will be. The wait is dragging on now. It looks like Luke Williams isn’t in the picture anymore. Seeing him working at Bristol’s Airport pretty much confirms that for me.

That makes it even more likely that something else is going on behind the scenes. Otherwise, I don’t understand why it’s taking so long.

It does seem like the next manager might already be working elsewhere. It would be great if Notts could bring in someone from a strong setup like the Danish Under-21s.

As long as the new coach is given proper support, I think they’ll have every chance to get the best out of the team we’ve got.

If it does turn out to be Steffen HΓΈjer, I wonder how everyone would feel about it. For a club like ours, it would be a big achievement to bring in someone with his background, especially after doing well with the Danish Under-21s.

I’d be more than happy if he got the job. While EFL experience would be useful, a good coach should be able to adapt. With Notts looking to reshape the coaching setup, it does seem possible they might be going for someone who fits into that new structure.

Martin Peterson set to be named new boss. Ex Burton manager. Thoughts anyone?

Very underwhelming. Either way with Denmark seemingly now out of the U21's, we'll find out soon.

Not someone I would've predicted and it'll feel underwhelming given the search has been this long. A lot of people will look at the very short spell at Burton and yes it's poor but it's maybe not the best way of judging someone. I think what's more telling to me is how he’s been part of Michael Duff’s coaching team both at Swansea and then Huddersfield and that style just doesn’t really fit with how we play, it's far from fluid attacking football that's for sure.

I think Huddersfield played something like 6 games at home without scoring before Duff was sacked and given Patterson used to be a forward I'm sure he'll have been heavily involved with the attacking coaching...

Given all the talk about HΓΈjer, the timing is a really strange coincidence. I wonder if he was originally going to be the main man in our new setup. But chances are nobody knew anything and it's just chance.

He was under contract at Huddersfield, so maybe they were angling for compensation. But then what's the point in holding onto him in June, when everyone is on holiday anyway?

I do think it’s a bit poor that it took this long to make what feels like a low-key appointment. Still, as I said, Martin Paterson should get our backing. As fans, we need to support the club through this. If not for the board, then for Notts and the players who gave everything last season.

Martin Paterson, will he be the saviour of the Pies or the creator of our demise???

Personally I think he deserves all loyal fans getting behind him 100%. Welcoming him and his team with Notts County's open arms. He has a difficult enough job to do without all of us on his and the teams back's. Let us judge by the long term not the short fuse.
