Managers swearing

I was interested to hear one caller on Radio Red's Matchtalk Programme say he had taken his son to watch the Accrington match and he sat behind the dugouts, (which is where I normally sat but wasn't for this particular match), he said he was appalled by the foul mouthed language that both managers and their assistants used in the dugouts particularly when speaking to the 4th official. He said he wouldn't want to expose his son to that kind of language again and the managers should be ashamed.

 

I have noticed this too and have wondered about the wisdom of letting my grandson hear the language but I don't think he is really old enough to understand yet.

 

What do others think, should managers set an example, not only to the players but also the young fans who look up to them? Or is it a part of everyday life that youngsters should get used to these days?

One of the downsides to sitting where I used to in the Pavis was the fact you would hear managers, coaches and even the players which were not playing swear. I've shouted at a couple not to do it, 3 managers have responded by swearing directly at me but I will be honest, I thought it shown how tied up in the game they was but that said I don't appreciate it and I was with Jake and Ellie when those times happened.

Steve Evans I've found to be the worst.

I felt he was going to have an heart attack the rate he was going and he made my brother @william1984 appear a saint when it comes to swearing.

Every word, literally "F" this and "F" that.

Also, I heard a lot of comments re the swearing of Stanley's manager. He should be ashamed of himself!

Derry is bad for it in the heat of the moment.

I think managers should set an example, swearing is not clever and we are a family club, are we not? Then why use vulgar language. Its not acceptable and FA and/or the football league should do something to tackle it.

I don't like excessive swearing, but you're going to hear it at the football like it or not. The school playground is full of swearing children trying to show how cool and grown up they are, and it wasn't any different in the late 80s/early 90s. Unless you're going to completely cut off kids from the outside world, you aren't going to stop them hearing it. However, you can stop them using it.

Oh Steve Evans , don't get me going about him again. One of the most obnoxious managers I've seen at the lane.

 

I agree with @upthepies that Derry is as bad, he swears a lot but I suppose in his defence it is in the heat of the match but he ought to be able to control it and be a bit more professional.

The thing for me, do managers swear whilst giving interviews?

I heard Carroll swear at Mike Edwards, Mike didn't reply he just smiled and put his thumb up enough to say "Okay, whatever". This lead to someone shouting at Carroll from the crowd, which Carroll just gave a long stare. To be fair, there are many fans who swear and I heard a lot more in the Pavis stand when I used to sit there than I do in the Kop.

There are some prolific swearers in the Kop but it's more tongue in cheek, than aggressive.

I agree with @DangerousSausage - My children know I won't tolerate hearing them swear.

I think you all should be focusing on the game, I pay little attention to what anyone says to me during games ask my better half.

Well I for one think it should be cut out, you can accept the odd time but in this professional sport it happens far to often for me.

Shaun needs to find suitable words to replace the chosen swear words he says, perhaps we can suggest it in the next meet the fans? @Cobby Go on lad, ask everyone what words our management could replace for the swear words they use.

The thing is its pointless, a lot like booing your side.

I have not noticed or heard shaun swear, i sit in the pavis near the away end and i could hear accringtons manager doing it, as i could some of the coaches but i consider this to be normal. When we played ipswich the other mccarthy was swearing, as was poyet a few years back and whoever the manager was of posh before furguson returned.

They do it all leagues, it is apart of every day football.

I am sure if you watched us train you would hear swearing, as you would if you watched manchester city or perhaps chelsea. Its sadly become accepted, nobody really batters an eyelid and i suspect nothing will change with that regards. Please gentleman no swearing seems quite dated now, all managers/players/fans do it.

Unfortunately you hear swearing all the time, in a lot of workplaces, not that that makes it right.

a professional sport with bad language? it is not uncommon, i've seen dart players swear, cricketers, hockey players, basketball, you name it they all do it but i do feel it should be controlled better.

It depends how much and who, a little is hardly a problem but if it's all they do the football league should hand out fines.

That would give the 4th official something to do.

I'm one of the old school when it comes to swearing, it's probably a bit old fashioned now sadly but I never swear in front of women or children but when I worked I would swear in the workplace with my male colleagues.

It was something like that @GrannyPie, he was certainly very audible, especially when he turns round and faces the bench, you not only can hear him loud and clear you can certainly lip read took, he was not a happy bunny.
