My concern .

Hi everyone not been on for a while, but this is really bugging me, anyway here goes.

Firstly let me say i am really happy with our transfer dealings, and yes there is a lot
to be excited about.

But my main fear is the CM, where is the ball winner the thug you need at this level,
because as good a ball player Vaughan is, he his not a Yates, O'Connor, Harding, Bishop,
feel sorry for Hewitt the poor guy can't do it on his own.

It's no coincidence last year we was bombing up until January, when Yates left and we
never replaced him, maybe because they thought O'Connor would be fit, i am just hoping
that young Will Patching might do the job, but we have not seen him play yet?

Maybe it's just me.

Don't think this is too much cause for concern mac. Understand where you are coming from but Hewitt I think will turn into that type of player but with a different style of play I don't think well be giving the ball away too much this year and if so we have Vaughan who has the experience to know how to stop counter attacks etc.

I think we will do ok .. I have a feeling there will be further editions to the teams maybe 1 or 2 we have the mix of youth and exspirence this season which should balance each other out rather nicely

I am not that worried.

The club can work on molding a player to be a ball winner, and to be fair each player on the field needs to take responsibility for defending but I understand your point. The midfield does need a general, some to lead and organise the players. I think given the chance David Vaughan will prove his worth.

i think we have to see how the players do against their own level, i dont think i have the same concerns. im more worried about the defence and if the club gives duffy the armband.

I agree 100%, no ball winner and most likely an incapable defender as captain.

Valid concern but we have to give the squad time to settle together.

Based on Fitzsimons performance against Derby I would be nervous, but these concerns could disappear. It was probably nerves more than anything.

Vaughan will come good, he got stuck in against Derby after awhile. The whole squad lacked awareness for marking, but it will only get easier.

It's not a concern I share at all.

There are playing who could do this, Elliot Hewitt never gets the praise he deserves for doing the gritty side of the game. Curtis Thompson used to do much of the same and him signing for Wycombe proves he was wasted and undervalued at Notts.

Will Patchings is said to be a good defensive player, who knows?

I think the defence should be able to do better than they typically can.

I think the squad now is much stronger on paper than when we had Ryan Yates on loan, there will be a player that will step up no doubt but everyone needs to be responsible for claiming that first or second ball.

@macpie Good post, I have fears to on this matter after Saturday. Early days though.

Championship team isn't it, Luton will be more of an eye opener.

I hope its not too late to adjust things in time for the new season but the squad seems to be there.

What I would say that it is best to play pre season against higher opposition as that can highlight the sides deficiences. Hopefully we can learn from the Derby match

Well Notts does usually play a decent standard, it only seemed like we did when we landed ourselves back in League Two.

I'm not concerned about this issue at the moment, it's neither wrong or right for me. I think some of the flack David Vaughan has gotten on social media is a bit unfair by a small majority of fans. He started slow, yet picked up and was for me one of the best performers in the first half. I think he'll do a job fine, each player must attempt to get the ball back - if we are to base anything from the Derby friendly, it would be Enzio Boldewijn isn't a winger (or is somewhat lazy in games where he feels it's perfectly fine to look like a headless chicken).

I think the squad just underestimated Derby, one team wanted to win and the other treated it like a day trip.

There are capable players in midfield who can do enough, problem for me is organisation and the captain who can get the best out of players performances. Jon Stead does absolutely nothing in this role.

All clubs need five things to be successful on the pitch.

1) a solid keeper

2) good strikers

3) a good captain

4) a team that works well together

5) a commanding midfielder who can win back the ball

Most of these can be achieved with training if the right players have been signed, let's hope Kevin has at least three midfielders who can pick up the play and win back the ball for Notts.
