Kamikaze defending. Sublime attacking. No balance whatsoever. It's been a crazy ride up to now!4 points
-
@Fan of Big Tone .Stal mentioned the balance of the team. it may not be just the defensive problems. Players not tracking back when they should.Too much space for teams to exploit. We've seen that all season. One positive thing. We didn't give up and we showed character to come back. And a point on the road, stopped the consecutive defeats on the road. .4 points

What the hell was that I’ve just listened to, our cat nearly hit the ceiling when I celebrated Didsy’s late goal but then we conceded again! We’ve got to get the defence sorted out it’s ridulous to score 5 away from home and not win the game. It must have been a great game to watch for the neutral but my nerves were really on edge.4 points

Yeah, I'm not saying the defence are perfect but when you have just 3 natural defenders in the team what do you expect... It kind of seems obvious now. Even Man City play with 4 defenders and then they have Rodri who is very defensively switched on. We've stepped up a level in terms of opposition now so moving forward for the tough away games and home games we absolutely need to think about making tweaks to become more solid. One of the CM's to just focus on providing protection for the defenders and it might be painful to do but I'd even think about sacrificing one of Nemane or Jodi for a more defensive option in Tobi or Chicksen. It's about balance really and we are almost overloaded with attackers. I think just a few small changes could have a big impact. And as for the game itself; Painful, madness, speechless. I honestly was thinking at half-time Grimsby will score within the first 10 minutes of the re-start; 7 minutes it took them. I should’ve put some money on it. But to let them score just 1 minute after we claw it back to 3-3… I felt sick when we got it back to 4-4. And at 4-5 I thought at least we’ll get a point at worst now! BUT I WASN’T ACTAULLY BEING SERIOUS. Bloody hell Notts. And I know our defending is bad, but we basically scored the same goal 4 times, JJ crossing it to the back stick for a tap in! Someone got that Spiderman meme for the Notts and Grimsby ability to defend…3 points
-
This is very true. The back three have been criticised a lot, but you're supposed to defend as a team. They've been left hanging by their teammates too often this season. Witness Stone frequently playing short passes to Baldwin when he had a Grimsby player right behind him. We've prioritised players who are comfortable on the ball and good going forwards for years. It was a calculated risk that worked and got us back into the Football League, but we're going to have to re-learn the art of defending if we're going to mount a serious promotion challenge at this level.3 points
-
True @Fan of Big Tone, but I'm also pathetically grateful we didn't lose after letting in five! The first half hour was absolutely shocking and it looked really bleak for a time. And I've learned not to get too excited when we take a one goal load... Time for a lie down!3 points

Sven played a part in encouraging the Pride of Nottingham? What a man. He wasn't treated very well when he took charge of England, but my respect was earned for all he did for Notts. I found the news to be very sad, but at least he has spoken confidently and has said he will live every day to the fullest. I wish him well, despite the awful news.3 points

Very sad news intensified by the local and personal connections.I wish him and his family strength at this very difficult time.3 points

I saw his interview on East Midlands Today. He looked quite different, and it was horrible to see just how much he had changed. I know, he's 75, but he's always looked rather healthy. It's such a shame; I really wish him and his family all the best. I don't feel it's appropriate to share an image of him from the interview, but for anyone who saw it will understand what I mean. It's awful! When I worked at Harts Restaurant and Hotel, I met him many times and due to our first encounter whenever he was in - he would ask to say hello to me. The first time I met him, I froze and thought that I would be sacked instantly because I was working as a kitchen porter. I had to fetch something from the store room and, the general manager hated kitchen staff being seen in the lobby areas, but there was no other way to access it. The head chef used to pop his head out of the kitchen door to see if the coast was clear for us 'unseen workers'. It just so happens that I was wearing an old Notts shirt (plain white), I was coming down some stairs as I noticed Sven walking from the direction of the men's room. I was overwhelmed and a little starstruck. We're not supposed to interact with dinners or guests, he walked up to me and said "Hello", I didn't reply. He said, 'Oh, I see. You support Nottingham County;. I replied. 'Yes, I support Notts County.' He asked me how long I had supported them, he replied 'I like Nottingham and Nottingham County. He also enquired about Forest, which is where I politely mentioned that it is Notts County and Nottingham Forest, informing Sven that people wouldn't like it and would pick up on it. He thanked me and asked if I would be watching the next Notts game. I told him I would be working, but I do make games when my rota is free. A little side note, one of the other times Sven spoke to me, I mentioned that I was floating the idea of taking my Notts forum more seriously. It was him, who told me to do it. I called @GrannyPie on my break and told her about this, briefly speaking to @super_ram. In 2006, I started a basic forum under the domain notts-county.co.uk. It was just family and select friends, quite a simple setup. It merged into the Pride of Nottingham. I'm very thankful for the kindness Sven showed me because it proved what a gentleman he is.3 points

This is disheartening news. Sven did Notts a massive favour when he attempted to find a buyer and forgave the money he was owed by the fraudulent Munto. I hope he surpasses the expectations.3 points

We can`t seriously expect our attackers to score three, four or even five goals each game to win. Today we needed six!2 points

@Robbie I agree, we won't agree on this, but it is refreshing to have a considered intelligent debate rather than the rabid slanging matches which are more common on this subject. It's a good discussion. I think that Brexit was the result of austerity. It created a large group of people who felt marginalised and worse off who were looking for someone to blame. The right wing press fed the anti EU sentiment and Farage and Johnson brought the popularism which tipped the balance - along with a fair sprinkling of breaking electoral rules and blatant lies. Still, it is what it is, The trouble with Global Britain is that we have gone from being a captain on one one several battleships in a large fleet afloat on the sea of international relationships, to the Admiral of a fleet of 1 frigate trying to steer between the fleets of China, the US, and the EU. We need to change our behaviours internationally to reflect this if we are to be successful... we are more of a New Zealand than an international power these days. We are not in a position many conditions on trade deals and will have to accept what we are given - increased migration from India for example, hormone injected beef from Australia and chlorine washed chicken from the UK. To trade with other countries you have to comply with the prevailing rules in the market into which you are selling, but if you can't impose your domestic laws on your trading partners then you have to accept theirs - the idea of making your own laws in isolation is a fallacy.. This is what made the single market work and kept costs down and standards high, everyone agreed on the rules of engagement and the block was big enough to impose or at least resist attempts from other countries to change EU law. Unfortunately this was presented as Political Union, but it was simply agreeing ground rules. In my field of work, we were adept at taking an EU directive and then making our own set of regulations which were different to say those in Ireland as they suited the UK economy. We would often bring in additional requirements over and beyond those required by the EU.. That is why we will need to accept lower food standards, environmental standards, removal of working rights and freedom of movement and a lower standard of living. This is actually what we voted for, it was just dressed up as independence. There is no such thing in a globalised world.2 points

This is tragic news for Sven, his family and friends, I can’t imagine getting a diagnosis like that it must be awful for him. More here Sven-Goran Eriksson: Former England manager says he has cancer and 'best case a year' to live https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/679429432 points

After some feedback, I have decided to shake the forum categories up and structure things differently. I will be amending each section's description to make it clearer what should be posted within each area, as a means to remove any confusion. Also, we could consider creating forums for different sports apart from football. Should we opt for a general sports forum or split them up? I'm still very much in the process, but as always feedback is important.1 point

Notts County 1 Southampton 0 August 1991 featuring our great defender, Dean Yates.1 point

On Saturday Notts travel to Grimsby, how many links can we find between the two clubs. My offering is Gary Lund one of my favourite all time players. He started his career at Grimsby and played for them between 1983-1986, he arrived at Notts in 1987 via Lincoln and stayed until 1995 making 248 appearances scoring 62 goals. How many more can we find? Over to you.1 point

I hope Sven enjoys his remaining time, it’s sad he’s ill but he can now make the most of his days. He’s had a good life.1 point

I am like a broken record.. We had the 2nd worst defence in the NL last season, based on the 30% time we didn't have possession... I am sure Luke said in an interview the whole team needed to be kept together... It really hurts to concede in injury time...1 point

Walsall's recent 6-1 away win there sets the bench mark! ( on just 33% possession stats) I agree with @Robbie I would like Brooks and Macari to start. We await defensive reinforcements but we should continue with the possession based game1 point

All the media and interviews coming from Notts this week has been very positive, I think (hoping) the players will want to prove a point that it doesn’t matter who’s in charge, they are good enough to do well at this level. Jim’s got a slightly tougher job picking the team, after the short break we should have more players available, surely we can’t have picked up anymore injuries! The real issue for Jim is can he justify picking himself No idea if the new keeper will be straight in, I guess Tom Weal will guide him there. I think the experienced pros are more likely to get the nod, maybe even Rawlinson back in for this game? And I’m hoping to see Robertson at some stage too. David Artell hasn’t really changed Grimsby’s form too much, only achieving 2 wins from his first 8 games. They did just get drubbed 6-1 by Walsall at home in their last game, but like us they’ve had an extended break too so they’ll have worked on improving things and making sure that doesn't happen again. I’m slightly more nervous about this game as we are in a slightly unknown/in-lingo period, a win would obviously be great but I’d be more than happy with a solid performance and point! (Cue drab 0-0 now LW has gone).1 point

JoBs approach seems to have been to keep the ship steady and don't change things about. So I would expect to see Robertson in for Gosling, The new goalkeeper for Brooks and maybe Macari for Brindley, but I wouldn't expect many changes and probably quite a flat performance.1 point
-
Grimsby won't be the same that we played at Meadow Lane, they will be more switched on now, and I can see the game unfolding similar to Tranmere Rovers. I think they will want to be direct and take the game straight to us, I can't see them being passive on the ball. If I were Jim, I would approach the game mindful of our defensive issues. If we do play Luca Ashby Hammond we do need to be cautious of this because it's very much an unknown and matches are very different to training. Defensively we need to be tight, on the ball ideally creative and forward-thinking. With us taking our chances on goals which present themselves, a good all round performance will be a good sign. I'm hopeful that the departure of Luke Williams is a smooth transition for us, as it will help whoever comes in if we can maintain a level of good form.1 point
-
i think this is who we are after and i think the reason its taking longer to appoint someone is because we are looking to hire someone who is currently already hired. compensation is probably the main reason reason, as i feel the reedtz will have already compiled a list of managers well before luke williams had left. if we are going outside of this, i still quite like gary rowett as i think he would do well with our squad.1 point

PS. @ChrisI posted an article on Nottingham Panthers in the Granny Pies Gen Discussion Forum. Wonder if that post should go into the other Sports now?1 point

Yes, Notts Women's team now has a forum for all their discussions - including any match based ones. So if it's related to the ladies team, that's where it goes. I have also added a general sports forum. Thanks, @Robbie. ---- Additionally, I have updated all the forums descriptions. On the community index page, Notts forums are at the top, followed by PON, then All things related to sports. English, Domestic World Football, International and the 'Sports Stage'. https://prideofnottingham.co.uk/community/forum/27-the-sports-stage-everything-outside-of-football/ Admin announcements are at the very bottom, partly to encourage people to view the bottom end of the site and because I like using the announcement feature to pin important posts, which makes it more convenient to have the section out of the way. As suggested by @Burnz3r0, I will also rewrite the welcome message new members get sent automatically - along with updating the introduction section.1 point

Yeah it's interesting the brothers clearly don't just look at win percentage, neither IB or LW had particularly great records before coming to us. I'm not too fused if the new guy is in a similar situation. The more I think about it the more I can see it being someone like Brian Barry-Murphy, in that he had 109 games in charge of a Rochdale but his record on paper doesn't look that great. However look at where Rochdale are now, they've just bombed since he left so it was clearly not a well run club he was managing at. This is the kind of thing the Bros will look into and they'll find out how he really did there. There's clearly much more to it than just win %. But it is an odd thing that some people do get hung up on. I'd imagine a lot of other owners do and wouldn't have thought much had Luke Williams applied at their club. Now they all know it was a massive missed opportunity as he was available for a couple of months before we got him!1 point

Some other names that have featured with the betting sites that haven't been mentioned on here yet are: Ruaidhri Higgins - Current Derry City manager. Scot Lindsey - Current Crawley manager. Daniel Stendel - Former Barnsley manager and current Hannover 96 reserve team manager. Cameron Toshack - Son of John, last job was a first team coach at Leeds. And interestingly he has spent a lot of time coaching at Swansea. Matt Gill - Former player (I don't really remember him, so he clearly wasn't great) current Southampton Assistant Coach. And he took over LW role when he left Swansea for us...1 point

@DangerousSausage I think Phil would be a good choice too along with other possible contenders. It's refreshing that Notts always tend to keep these things under wraps. I'm sure lots of work is going on, as I write, to find, interview & appoint a new Head Coach, but Notts won't rush it. We will probably be taken by surprise once the Reedtz brothers' choice is presented to us.1 point

We tried to get Altrincham's Phil Parkinson before we appointed Williams, so the board clearly rate him. I wonder if we'll have another go? We're a division higher now, so might be a more tempting proposition. He signed a new two-year contract in the summer, so there would be compensation (which we could pay with the compensation we received from Swansea). But does he want to leave?1 point

@Piethagoram i was like who is that at first but i have listened to two interviews from him, one from a tour and this. i think he speaks well but would he come to us for a chance to gain first team managerial experience? i am not so sure.1 point

There are some really good shouts here. Maynard would be interesting as he's had Wealdstone punching well above their weight. We might have beat them comfortably last season, but their budget was a world away from ours. Whoever we get, we can be pretty sure that we won't be getting a celebrity appointment. It may well come from leftfield, as the board does tend to look at their track record as a coach rather than as a manager.1 point

My site manager, who's a Birmingham fan, messaged the group chat earlier with the message directed to me as "Rooney's available mate " Whoever the Reedtz decide to bring in as Luke Williams replacement, I trust that they'll make a good appointment.1 point

Dear @Robbie "Clueless." So Notts supporters who support Brexit are clueless?"...I was IN NO WAY saying that. I was inferring to those Brexiteers who say we must move on, but in reality, they are clueless as to how to fix Brexit reality into today's political, social, economic environment where there are inbuilt conflicts, which say for example, conflict with international law. Chris Grey's blog discusses the post Brexit narrative quite well https://chrisgreybrexitblog.blogspot.com/2022/11/cant-pay-wont-pay.html Again, I repeat, freedom of movement helped deliver the Danish brothers as owners of Notts. We may not have a club to support if it wasn't for them. Just think about the possibilities of Notts scouring Europe for rare gems of talent that could drive Notts further up the leagues. Joining #EFTA maybe the half way house as a way forward. COYP0 points
