  • I was talking to my dad about it this past Monday, it wasn't looking good for him. The most recent pictures, you could see he's taken a decline, but I hope he recovers further. It's not nice seeing someone's face go like that and very rarely do you see them put the weight back on at that age.

He's a good pundit, and I have been told in the past he was a very good footballer, but he was well before my time.

I do miss watching him on Match of the Day, mind. He was one of them you may not agree with, but you could see his reasoning and generally he just seemed to love football. Whereas the standard these days it's much poorer, despite the better pay.

Good morning everyone I trust weโ€™re all sober after drinking to forget the abysmal performance by England.

What have you got planned for the weekend? We are heading home after a lovely week in the New Forest, not looking forward to the long drive but itโ€™ll be good to be in my own bed tonight.

Let us know what your doing this weekend.

  • You certainly get around @Piethagoram. Lovely pictures, Trentham Gardens is a place I think I ought to visit.

Today Iโ€™ve been gardening clearing out weeds, cutting back shrubs etc because itโ€™s brown bin day tomorrow.

The trouble is Iโ€™ll suffer for it tomorrow with aching joints etc.

We've got a couple of chicken legs Iโ€™m going to bbq later, Mrs. T is prepping a salad to go with it and Iโ€™ll have a nice cool drink while Iโ€™m cooking.

Who else would s enjoying the sunshine?

It's been a lovely day today after a bit of a misty start this morning. 24 Deg C here.

Walked my couple of miles this morning,15 miles for the week.ย

No football this afternoon at the Euros. Both matches tonite at 8 pm, Looking forward to watching Scotland to see if they can qualify.

Helped the wife with a bit of housework. Trying to do my bit since retiring.

During this election watching no TV news channels or election broadcasts, sometimes there are better things to do.

A couple of years ago, there were whispers about him coming to us on loan. This will be Julian Larssonโ€™s first proper stint at a club, and I personally believe heโ€™ll do well with Burton. They have a solid history of getting relatively unknown signings to perform impressively for them.

i have never heard of him but reading his wiki, hes 23 and does not have many starts to his name. hes certainly an unknown to me, but i do wish burton well. forests academy is pretty decent, so i am sure he will be capable.

Found this on Sam's Wiki page and I quote.

"Some analysts have labelled Allardyce aย long ballย manager, though he has disputed this perception as "totally & utterly wrong." He takes a modern technology & statistics-centred approach to tactics & coaching & has been praised for his organisational & man-management skills".

I think he has learned a lot over his 33 years of Football management and people do change.

I can remember being upset when Warnock left Notts, I was upset when Big Sam left, the same feeling when Luke left, I'm not quite over Luke leaving yet, but I will be sooner, rather than later.

All three are legends as far as I'm concerned.

I would also like to thank all PON members who have contributed with different opinions on this subject.

We may see things differently on occasions but we always respect everyone else's view. That's what makes our community special.

    @Robbie

This is what I mean an awful lot of Fans are under the I illusion that Managers such as Big Sam and Neil Warnock despite their Massive experienceย  atย  Club Management level, Can Not Adopt to the Modern Game. Really? The Strange thing is when a Club is in Trouble and face Relegation, it's this type of Manager/Head Coach they turn to and once they achieve Safety, they're usually Let Go.

And Fans Moan they're only in it for the Money, regardless of them Saving their Club from Going Down. If they're offered a good wage then they are going to take up the Offer after all if you're Good At Something Never Do It For Free.ย  Look at David Moyes saves West Ham from the drop, gets the Hammers regular top Half Finishes in the Premier League, qualifies for Europe three seasons in succession, Wins West Ham a Trophy for the first time in 43 years and he's Sacked. Why? They don't like the way his Team Play Football. The Mind Boggles. Apologies for going slightly off Topic.

    ย

i still dont see him being suited to wales, that is nothing against his management style but if he is to return to management. he needs to find a league team that he can build and stick around with. did he takeover mark hughes at blackburn? if i am right he did okay with them but he has never come close to repeating his success at bolton.

I've reserected this thread because VAR is in the news again, and I'm asking what's the point of VAR?

The whole system needs a total revamp, because in it's present state, it is not fit for purpose. The authorities should even consider suspending it.

Every match that uses VAR there is controversy over a decisionย  by the Referee or the VAR team.

There is confusion over interpretation of the VAR rules.

VAR is missing critical events in a game, then the authorities say VAR cannot rule on that incidentย

VAR is becoming a total farce and changes need to be made.

I believe VAR should be either allowed to rule on more incidents and the VAR officials given more powers, otherwise trim VAR down to goal line decisions and ruling over yellow and red cards only.

World football really needs to address the VAR problem and the FA need to be leading on this too.

  • We had the first big VAR controversy in EURO 24 in a group match between Netherlands and France last night when the Netherlands had a goal disallowed because, the Netherlands player, who was clearly in an offside position, was deemed to have interfered with the French goalkeeper trying to make a save from a shot by a Netherlands player.

The controversy was because there was disagreement whether the Netherlands player was actually interfering with the movement of the French goalkeeper or not.

All the pundits at the BBC post match analysis thought that a goal should have been awarded because the player didn't appear on the replays to be close enough to be interfering with the French goalkeeper's movement.

The other controversy was the time it took the British VAR Referee's assistant to make the decision. It was about four minutes.

The point to all of this, if there had been no VAR, the Linesman would have put his flag up for offside, the online Ref would have made an instant decision, and that would have been the end of it.ย

But with VAR, the goal is scored, the team and crowd celebrate, then the Linesman put the flag up then it goes to VAR.

Then VAR analyse it but there is no information or what the VAR team & the Ref are discussing for the players or the spectators.

That is the reason most critics like myself dislike VAR. Players & fans celebrate a goal, then 4 minutes later it is ruled out and players and spectators don't know why. This is not what football is all about.

Also, Ref's should have a microphone connected to the PA system so that players and spectators can be kept in the loop regarding contentious decisions.

VAR disallowed a Lukaku goal due to this fine margin, a toe end.

Is this decision to disallow the Lukaku goal the right decision or is it the wrong decision?

I think the decision to call offside is wrong because the naked eye could never determine whether Lukaku was offside or not.

And that is just the point. The offside law was never meant to be judged in this way by freezing frames like this.

It was meant to be judged by the naked eye of a linesman in true time.

In my opinion, we didnโ€™t really give him ample opportunity to progress from his loan periods. Itโ€™s challenging for young players, as they are still in the learning phase. Their improvement largely depends on the team they play with and their personal experiences. Nonetheless, I wish him the best of luck.

i hope he settles down for hereford because his wiki seems to be full of moves, which is something i dont think helps players. hes now old enough to do well given the time and if he settles. he should do just fine, if he wants to play higher he needs to work for it.

Another player who was signed by the Magpies, but hardly played for the First team, being Loaned out Season after Season so never got the Chance to show his abilities, then was realised by the Club at the end of his Contract. That seems to be the Lot of many Academy Players at Notts repeatedly Loaned out season following season, not given much of a chance to play first team Football, then moved on once their contract is up.

Despite the Fact that the Head of Recruitment insists that he wants players in the Notts First XI who have come through the Academy. Unless he gets his chance this season Tiernan Brookes may be another player on his way, once his contract ends.ย

good luck to him, the national league south is a difficult league to escape from but that applies for the north and main division. i just hope he enjoys his time there and does well. i always thought he was okay at notts, nothing amazing but reliable enough.

So what do PON members think about the latest performance of England after their latest group game against Denmark.

Are you happy with this team, their shape and the tactics of the Manager?

  • Show previous comments  21 more
  • At present, England appears to be a team that slowly builds momentum, relying on things going right to play with confidence. This is surprising given the talent within the squad, but talent alone doesnโ€™t necessarily create a great team. I believe some players are getting caught up in their own hype, yet they fail to perform on the international stage. This leads me to think they are overrated by a significant portion of our fans.

On paper, we should be dominating the group and we certainly have some real talent. Itโ€™s hard to understand why this squad wouldnโ€™t be expected to be in contention for the Euros, but their current style of play makes it difficult to see that happening. I donโ€™t think itโ€™s fair to place all the blame on Gareth Southgate. Some are quick to blame the manager at the expense of the players. Once the players step onto the pitch, they should be capable enough to figure out their opposition. Tactics are more of a guideline, so itโ€™s harsh to blame Southgate entirely.

What I would like to see from Southgate is a starting squad where players are playing in their strongest roles. Perhaps someone like Jude Bellingham could drop back and allow someone else to play further up the pitch. Phil Foden might benefit from this switch, but our real strength lies in our wingers. Bukayo Saka seems to focus more on his frustration with being fouled than on getting on with the game. He has the ability to take on players, but so far he has repeatedly made poor decisions when attempting this. He has been very disappointing, as he doesnโ€™t link well with anyone on that side of the pitch. I would be curious to see if he could link up with Trent Alexander Arnold, who our fans seem to be experts on, but who does perform better out wide.

@CliftonMagpieย I agree with much of what you have said, however I don't agree regarding Southgate.

Southgate is the Manager, he picks the players, he also has to take responsibility for shape, style, tactics and how the team is playing.

Southgate has had plenty of time to know who is strongest side is, but I don't believe he does know even at this stage of the tournament.

The buck has to stop with the Manager and if he cannot get the performance out of such a talented squad like he has here, then it is very fair for the press and the fans to question his tram selection and tactics.

Is the Goalkeeping coach the most underappreciated member of the technical team?ย

The Goalkeeping Coach is a relatively new position & many fans are unaware of their importance to a modern football team where the role of the goalkeeper has changed to what they were expected to do in the past.

Notts have a Goalkeeping Coach and he has become a very important member of the Coaching team.

The following article discusses the role of a Goalkeeping Coach & how they work within modern Coaching Teams.

good experienced coach, i was not aware keith downing had played for us until i read one of the tweets from pon about him. he seems to have had a wealth of experience, it makes me wonder why he has not tried to manage a team.

Iโ€™m not well-acquainted with him, apart from his involvement with the England team. I believe it was the U19s where I saw a video of him with the โ€œfutureโ€ England players a while back. A move to Blackburn seems like a positive step for his coaching career.

Welcome to Pon @Callumpie

With the Stories of the Players Notts have signed and the progress of England and Scotland in the Euro's I thought I'd take a break from Football and tell a Story not football related. And hopefully PON members will come on this thread and tell us all, a Story that they know. It doesn't have to be funny or Football Related. It can be about Hope or a Kind Act or just something that either happened to you or some one you know. A story that's stuck with you for years and hopefully you will be willing to Share with other members. Here's mine.

My Mate Paul told me this story. A few years ago a family moved into the Big House (as the locals called it) next to the estate were he lived. Paul got to know the kids and hung around with them. One Day he was invited to the House. He told me all about the House, I wont bore you with the details. Outside the back Garden was massive, Paul had never seen anything so big. There was a big lawn to play on, and at the bottom of the Garden was a Fish Pond and in this Pond, Paul's mates Dad kept Koi Carp. Everything my Mate was told took second place to their Dad's Koi.

One day the Kids Dad found a Heron stalking around the Pond, thankfully he managed to shoo it off, before it did any Damage and ate any Fish. Not wanting to lose any of his Expensive Stock, the Dad sort advice and was told to get a Fake Heron a model and place it near the Pond, so any real Heron who saw the Fake one would think that, that was the Fake Heron's territory and would leave the Pond Alone.

So with the Fake Heron in place everything went smoothly for a few months. Until the Night of the Big Storm. Torrential Rain and High Winds battered the area and finally once the Storm was over ,the Koi owner went out to inspect the Damage. There were a few tiles missing off the Roof, garden furniture had been blown over then the Dad went to inspect his Koi pond. The Plants around and about had been Damaged by the Winds the water of the Pond appeared murky and the Fake Heron had fallen over, and it's head was under water. On picking up the Heron the Koi owner, found that the Fake Heron hadย  impaledย  his most expensive Fish (about ยฃ800's worth) on it's metal beak.

Notts win the toss and will bat first.

ย

i just wanted to wish @Fan of Big Toneย a happy birthday, its really good to be celebrating your day with you. i hope you have a good one.

I do not know whose job it is to make a decision, but may I suggest Notts playย Movinโ€™ On Upย by Primal Scream before or after each home game.

A well-known song with gospel connotations that has worn well since it was first released in 1990.

The lyrics epitomise Notts County and the journey we are on as weย Move On Up, with the owners commitment to getting into the next league, and the nextโ€ฆ

The lyrics reflect the transformative love that we supporters - old and new, young and old - have for our ancient team.

I really think it could become something. A statement of intent.

Please listen

Primal Scream - Movin on Up (Lyrics) (youtube.com)

Lyrics

I was blind, now I can see
You made a believer out of me
I was blind, now I can see
You made a believer out of me

I'm movin' on up now
Gettin' out of the darkness
My light shines on, my light shines on
My light shines on

I was lost, now I'm found
I believe in you, I've got no bounds
I was lost, now I'm found
I believe in you, I got no bounds

I'm movin' on up now
Gettin' out of the darkness
My light shines on, my light shines on
My light shines on

my light shines on
(My light shines on) my light shines on

  • Securing this player is a remarkable achievement. Itโ€™s a testament to our ambition that he would choose us over a team moving up to League One. Iโ€™m hopeful weโ€™ll bring in a few more players to bolster our squad. With added depth, weโ€™ll be well-prepared to face the challenges of League Two.

From what Iโ€™ve gathered, Crawley supporters hold him in high regard, which is often a positive indicator. His rapport with them suggests heโ€™ll quickly adapt to our team. The atmosphere at Meadow Lane is already electrifying, but the roar of the Kop in full voice is truly extraordinary.

I can imagine quite a few people agreeing, sadly because there's a lot of people who are against Gareth Southgate (perhaps lack a real understanding of the game).

There are some points which I would agree with, but I feel the video is pandering to those who have no clue.

Southgate wasn't the issue as to why Serbia grew into the game. No changes were made after we scored, changes if anything happened too late and at a point where our players allowed the game to become more pressured for them.

Yes, he went defensive when Serbia started knocking on the door.

It's a fair point about not subbing Harry Kane, however, Kane plays because he's a quality striker and just needs one chance. The issue was the lack of him. We could have switched strikers, but that wouldn't have resolved the creativity issue.

Phil Foden was very average, as were some of the players who were inconsistent as the game progressed.

The criticism is laughable.

"I'm not wrong." Oh boy. How deluded do you have to be to think you're the sole answer? Yes, Gareth Southgate is frustrating but every manager is. I wouldn't have taken Harry Kane off; I would have switched formations to bring on another striker. Southgate isn't afraid to make changes. He sees things differently, but it's not his fault we haven't won something. It's down to him that we have been more successful, asking the media to put pressure on him is such a clueless thing to say.

Our press does it by default...

  • Show previous comments  10 more
  • It's the players, perhaps Gareth Southgate could work on the formation but I would safely assume this is fine during training. It's easy to blame just one person, but it's the players who make poor in-game decisions. The passing hasn't been good enough, we are not direct enough. So far, Southgate has tried to inject energy and a bit more fight.

It seems to be having an impact, but I believe we are a very nervous nation - that over thinks every aspect of our play (from the players perspective). Which the players just need a bit of confidence.

We are setup to not be easily beaten, but that doesn't stop poor passes - that leads to interceptions from going into the back of our net. However, our weakest area on the pitch is the defence.

England supporters could learn from Scottish fans, who show unwavering passion and support for their team. Criticising in such a public manner is all too common among England fans. They need to consider the effects of their words. The teamโ€™s uninspiring performances are a let down, and Gareth Southgate needs to broaden Englandโ€™s approach beyond a narrow, defensive mindset.

I agree @BromPieย that England's recent performances have been uninspiring, but the fans shouldn't have need to criticise if the team played with passion & commitment in the second biggest tournament they will ever play in.

If they can't play like that they shouldn't be wearing the England shirt.

Just remember these players get millions of pounds in wages every year. We must expect much more from them and the Head Coach.

    ย

This is a very interestingย  and revealing stat that the Notts squad were clearly lacking the top three when it came to squad League 2 experience.

I think that it clearly shows that we need to recruit experienced League 2 players for next season, to have a much better chance of being promoted from this league.

ย

  • Show previous comments  13 more
  • No, we must sign the right players, not just those with League Two experience. Quality surpasses league experience, and some players simply need time to adapt. Players of higher quality are more likely to progress with the club than those with only League Two experience. Often, players stay in a division due to their skill level, which is what Notts should focus on when assessing. Statistics can be misleading and shouldnโ€™t be the sole factor.

    @Robbie

You can't fault the signings Notts have made so far, on Paper anyway the Magpies have a Good Look about them. I wouldย  however like to see the signing of a Experienced Player in the Jim O'Brien Mould, someone in the 29-31 year old age group, who's been around the Leagues, who can keep a Cool Head in Times of Stress and Pressure, who knows how to game manage and be a Calming Influence to the Younger Players in the Team. Someone Players Can Learn From and Respect.

Notts are bringing in more players from League Two who not only have experience but also the potential to play at a higher level. The team seems poised to develop significantly over the next two to three seasons. Itโ€™s an exciting and very positive prospect!

Tobi Adebayo-Rowling has been released and I don't think Chicksen will play a big part next season, even if he hasn't been transfer listed. Will Randall has been transfer listed and I wouldn't be surprised if he went back to Sutton.

That leaves us with Aaron Nemane and Jodi Jones to play RWB and LWB respectively. Whilst they are predominantly attack minded, it is obvious we need some wing-backs who are more adept defensively and can offer some more balance to the side. They have to be comfortable with defending, especially one-on-one, but also provide the necessary supporting going forward. They can't be too attack minded like Jodi but not too defensive minded like Chicksen.

Wing-Back stats.PNG

More stats can be found on Wyscout, but as said before, I'm not prepared to take out a mortgage to pay for their services, especially as their prices are going up. *Ryan Burke's stats are taken from this season's Irish League due to the fact he was in the Irish 2nd division last season with Waterford. I have thus, only taken his stats from his current games in this years League of Ireland.

RWB - Archie Davies, Joel Senior, Gus Scott-Morriss, James Clarke, Connor Barrett, George Wind

LWB - Nick Tsaroulla, Ryan Rydel, Ryan Burke, Bartlomiej Kukulowicz

My top 3 for each position would be Archie Davies, Joel Senior and Connor Barrett. Davies would command a fee, Senior is out of contract and with Morecambe's financial issues, it could be wise to move in. Barrett is out of contract and will likely be of interest to EFL clubs this summer. I think Clarke is more comfortable as a RB or in the right side of a back 3, rather than wing-back. I can see Scott-Morriss staying at Southend, because they've got a great chance of going up next season. George Wind has been linked with Notts and also has interest from Stockport and Barrow, but it's whether he can make that step up 3 leagues.

My top 3 for LWB is Nick Tsaroulla, Ryan Burke and Bartlomiej Kukulowicz. No doubt Tsaroulla will want a starting place but it would be a great signing. Ryan Burke was on the books of Birmingham, before moving to Ireland, where he won promotion last season and has started the majority of games for Waterford this season and is comfortable at LB or LWB. Kukulowicz is a younger option but his stats make for good reading, despite not starting as many games. He can also play on both flanks. Rydel is a more ambitious one. He hasn't played as much at Stockport this season due to injury, but I would imagine he would want to start, which is unlikely with Jodi at the club.

  • Do you think it would be sensible to make another defensive signing? If Connell Rawlinson were to leave on loan or as a free transfer, it could potentially create some room. Personally, I wouldnโ€™t oppose bringing in someone like Lewis Macari, who could be a promising addition for the future.

On 21/05/2024 at 13:39, Simon Clark said:

A bit of context to that tweet from Tom Williams. We scored 4 that day, should have had double that and Colchester were shocking defensively.

So were we, which is why we let in 5 and should have let in 10.

this is spot on, it was one of those games where both teams knew they would score but it was a matter of who would out score the other. i thought it would be a draw at one point but colchester pushed for the win. defensively both teams were a real nightmare.
