Lets hope he is the right person for the job, I actually listened to his interview today and I can understand why you have the faith you do in him.

The reason for the PR statement was the interview with Julian Winter, whilst it was most probably the norm he, for me, came across as trying to hard to convince us that Jamie is the right man. Again we didn't sit in on the interview  so will never know just how good he was. Looking backwards anyone other than Jose Mourhino would have caused upset I think!!

Thank you once again for taking the time to have this conversation and please accept my apologies for any upset I may have caused.

Julian has been settling into role, organising quite a lot and now is the time for him the project himself a little more. Let's face it, most folk will prefer to  concentrate on what's on the pitch. If that works, you don't want to be hearing too much from us lot. It's about the football.

And no probs at all. Wasn't it you I talked grass seed, fibre sand and nitrogen levels to?

It was indeed ;-)

He comes across really well, probably me looking into it further than I should (occupational hazard...)

None of us sat in the interviews, but at some point it needs to be raised, why do Notts seem to pin so much on an interview? Which ever way you look at it, managing a football club is a one off role. One day you are a messiah, next your sacked, next your a messiah at another club again. Not many other jobs like that imo. Surely experience and a certain demonstration of success need to be put before a good interview technique?

For the last four managers we have forgone experience for good interviews and where has it got us?

I hope JF does settle and do well,  it like most, I fear it'll be another six monther.

Hi Hissing.

Why is it that you think we set so much store in interview? It's a part of the process, granted, but we don't interview everyone and it's not all we do. Yes, Jamie's interview was exceptionally good, so it was emphasised.

However, before it gets to that stage, we've received many applications, read through CVs, checked the details, had incoming calls and recommendations and we've our own contacts, too.

We have a criteria checklist before interview. Some candidates will be stronger in some areas than others, some will have gaps, but with compensating additionals.

Interview is the time to present the club's structure and plan, for them to meet us and see if they want to work with us...to dig deeper, find out their pathway and reasons for it, ask situational questions, clarify and give them the platform to show us who they are and what their values are.And much more.

References are flowed up, additional questions asked and discussed. There's an awful lot more to candidates than appears in the public domain.

How good is the fit with the club, do our plans dovetail?  It's not just about interview, but we do need to know the man or woman as a person, too.

And no, not all managers we've had have interviewed well. But this one certainly did, it has to be said.

Hope that helps?

If club structure etc...is discussed in this setting at interview, would it be remiss of me to ask then @erindoors if the highly vaulted transfer panel still exists and who sits on it going forward? We were all (as in season ticket holders paying up front) promised quality over quantity and yet we now have a very large squad in the lowest league, playing 2 members of the coaching team as first teamers! I realise this is off at a tangent to the interview emphasis!

Was the resulting over burgeoning squad Ricardos fault or Branstons?

Back on task...

Obviously the biggest concern for all is the lack of experience for the fourth time. I understand JF will be advertising for an assistant and backroom staff members. Will experience in managing and coaching be a main criteria here as I think we can all agree a guiding hand may be an advantage. But lovely though the Laurel and Hardy routine was with Shaun and Greg, I suspect, with a wiser choice as assistant, SD may have survived longer. ( But that of course is personal opinion looking on from the stands!)

Good question. Yes there is still a group responsible for transfer dealings. Its about working together and joint responsibility. No barriers: we're all there for the same reason, we want success. Of course, they'll be some we get wrong, or don't work out as well as we thought they would. We've also got some excellent players. Eddy did have a playing contract, of course, and was brought in to bring a wise head and he's done well. It wasn't what we expected, of course. Pilks is also contracted, but we do have an excellent no2.

The panel consists of the BOD, the manager, assistant, Recruitment, with input from other depts such as medical.

The big squad is partly the result of having a reserve team this season. We brought players in we thought would add value for the future, some to develop, so it looks bigger than it is. Partly because some brought in as "for the future" have developed quickly and earned a 1st team place. It was difficult last close season, with RM not having the in depth knowledge of homegrowns, and vice versa. The manager chooses the team at the end of the day though, and plays them where he thinks best.  Yes, it does need to be more efficient and we need to address that.

Re assistant. Well, JF does have his options but he's clear that it must be a unified approach. He also had the humility to state that there could well be an option within, he would want to look at that, perhaps. He has to have someone he trusts and can work with, it's imperative. It also has to be right for the club.

None of it makes any sense. Why would you spend 150k on a striker, plus what is probably quite a significant wage budget on the squad as a whole, only to appoint a massive-risk, cheap option manager? I understand you might not think it is a massive-risk appointment, but having a look back on  your previous appointments of rookies, you will see why a lot of fans think so. Surely the large outlays justify each-other.

Spending 150k on a 31yo striker at this level is only done for an immediate impact. Bringing a rookie manager in is for the long-term (You would expect, for Notts - probably 3 months).  Total contradictions.

You can almost guarantee the situation we see ourselves in 6 months. Sacked manager. Owners introducing yet a new concept, more discontent.
There is absolutely no common sense about this manager recruitment. If you are hiring rookies, the biggest thing they need is time. Yet we all know that he will not be afforded that luxury. What is success this time? Like Curle/Short was it being short of the play-offs (In L1), or will it be if he doesn't get promoted, sack him. I don't know why we bother anymore tbh, we should just go manager-less and save the money on the compensations. I wonder how many managers are still on our pay-roll.

I haven't given up on Notts, but am I as interested as I once was? Absolutely not. I don't listen to the games any longer. Football is still important to me, but I find myself watching the other leagues, even the Conference, so I'm now an overall football fan I guess. Maybe some day I'll find the love for Notts again......

I must admit that I'm the opposite, as I pretty much only watch and listen to Notts, I don't even watch MOTD that often (too much skill depresses me). I have gone through this before and totally lost interest during the Admin/Trust years, only going occasionally and preferring to spend my Saturday's golfing, but even though I find this appointment uninspiring, I'm willing to give him until the end of the season to show me that he does have a bit of a clue.

There has been a lot of emphasis on the interview, which is odd for a football manager. Many of the most successful managers in the game wouldn't have interviewed well at all - many people had difficulty understanding Jimmy Sirrel, and Brian Clough probably wouldn't have even turned up!

To return to the topic, like everyone else my interest in Notts rises and falls with our fortunes. I usually don't bother watching the highlights if we lose, life is too short for that. I'm past the age when a football match seemed a matter of life and death, but a defeat can still spoil my weekend, even hundreds of miles away. I'm really fed up with Notts right now and depressed when I look at the table. I think the extreme nature of many people's reactions is partly down to seeing us back at the bottom end of League Two. We spent several dreadful years there before Munto and I for one never wanted to see us down there again. It was more than a humiliation, it felt like we were in terminal decline and going the way of Bradford Park Avenue.

I wasn't happy with the appointment but what's done is done, hopefully the club have struck gold for once. It also offers a clean slate and a fresh chance for a number of players, particularly those who went out on loan. Maybe Bennett, Adams and Milsom as a holding midfield can make us harder to beat. Fingers crossed the new boss does well.

I'm the same, over the years I've become more of a Notts fan and less of a football fan.  I look at all the results but really the Premiership holds little interest for me.  The obscene amount of money at that level makes it nothing like the football I grew up with.  One advantage of being a lower league club is that 99% of the time you know you'll kick off at 3pm on a Saturday and 7.45pm on a Tuesday, not when the TV company tells you.

I'll usually say how dissilluisoned I am wth things and say I've had enough after a defeat, but the next day I'm looking forward to the next game. It's a drug really isn't it? I'm just dissapointed I missed out on the glory days, and it does depress me to know I'm never going to see anything like that myself
