Mike Edwards leaves the club

Notts County strength and conditioning coach Mike Edwards is leaving the club.

‘Eddy’ enjoyed two spells with the Magpies, racking up well over 300 appearances and forming an important part of the backroom staff in recent seasons.

And the former Magpies captain, who was part of Steve Cotterill’s side that lifted the League Two title in 2009-10 and went on to enjoy a testimonial year, paid tribute to the supporters for their backing throughout his career at Meadow Lane.

“This place will always have a special place in my heart and the supporters are one of the main reasons for that,” he said.

“I’ve got too many special memories to mention but I have absolutely loved my time at Meadow Lane.

“The time has come for me to move on but I wish the gaffer, the lads and everyone connected with the club all the best for the upcoming season.”

Notts owner and chairman Alan Hardy added: “Mike is a legendary figure in these parts and we are very sorry to see him go.

“He has represented the club with consummate professionalism both as a player and staff member and leaves with everyone’s utmost respect.

“Mike will always be welcome at the Lane and I wish him all the very best in his future endeavours.”

Proud to be a Notts County Supporter for over 60 years.

I'm gutted to see him leave, he's a great person to have around the club and has been devoted to Notts for many years.

I wonder what's happening with regards to his position and what his future holds, I hope he finds a job in football that enables him to keep doing what he enjoys. All the best to him. Thanks Mike!

I agree, he's been a great servant to the club and will always be fondly remembered, it's always sad when long serving players leave the club but that's football, who knows he may return as manager one day, stranger things have happened, Tommy Lawton for instance although he was a far better player than he was a manager.

im shocked to see him leave, i really hope its because hes moving on and that its not because we are trying to save money. hes been a great servant to the club and he is one of those people who always engages with us fans.

its sad to see him go.

I was not expecting that, so Alan Smith and Mike Edwards have gone?

Who's going to do the coaching and stuff now? Looks like we are heading into another new era at the club. I would wish Mike Edwards all the best, as a player and a coach he did his uptmost for the club.

That's something out of the blue right there! I would not have expected to see this happen and I agree with those before me he will be hard to replace. We have struggled to fill his boots in defence, let alone as a member of the coaching staff.

Thanks for your great service Eddie.

Good luck to him! He's definitely one of the most recent icons that Notts have had.

His type of loyalty is hard to find and I didn't think he would come back after he was forced to train with the youth team, then ultimately released.

I think we owe a bigger debt to Mike Edwards than we might realise.  In the dark days of struggling to preserve league status he stood out as the one player who maybe made the difference between survival and non-league.  A real 100% player, just the type I like and I can only send him a big thank you and best wishes for whatever he does in the future.  The report on the official site suggests it was his decision to leave rather than the club's.  I'm sure he will always receive a really warm welcome at Meadow Lane whenever he returns even if it's for an opposing club.

What right do you have to tell me I'm wrong?  You're not my Granddaughter.

I agree with @Elite_pie, he has done a lot for the club and he's been a great player/coach. He was one of the first Notts players that I actually liked and looked up to.

Oh oh oh ohhhhh, everywhere where we go, watching super County putting on a show!

I wondered at the time when Lee Taylor departed under Derry's managerial reign, then Edwards took over his job. Lee was a top quality fitness guy and couldnt understand why he left? May have been a budgetary decision?

Isn't it always something like this?

At the bottom most are on the same level I would imagine, Mike's been a good servant but his wages could help the squad (if they are needed). It wouldn't surprise if others left.

When people ask what 'American Pie' is about, they're missing the point. The song isn't about the lines themselves - it's about what is between the lines. The song is about what isn't there.

@AmericanPiemost clubs now have a strength and fitness coach....would expect a new appointment soon
