  1. Welcome @paulnathan666, hope you like and will find time to join in with us here at Pride of Nottingham. We look forward to seeing your views, yet please don't go breaking bad on us! ;)

Care to tell us a little about yourself? You Pies!

  2. So, with last season's home win against Coventry being one of the high points of 13/14 (which was also the first Meet the Fans video). Will this game be one in which Coventry get their own back?

Will they be trying to prove something after their premature exit from the FA Cup?

Will we miss the 3 players who are away on international duty?

Fingers crossed we keep up our unbeaten run (Which is currently on one game unbeaten!)

Who is going to make the trip to the Ricoh Arena?

  3. which league  is the best in Europe ? I think the bundesliga

  4. Enjoyed reading the interview and grateful for any insight into the club, but I got the feeling he was not in a good mood when answering them. Surely he could have bantered a little, especially with the added question from TH grandson. Maybe a response of 'come back when the next tooth falls out then we'll discuss a deal!'

Link to PoN's Q/A with Ray Trew.

  9. Derry hails Carroll commitment

450098465_3042537.jpg?20140121133016Notts County boss Shaun Derry watched his side eke out a win at Coventry and then singled out goalkeeper Roy Carroll for praise.

The veteran County goalkeeper, like his opposite number in the Coventry goal, had little to do throughout the 90 minutes, but Derry said the fact it was his second game in less than 24 hours underlined the team spirit at the club.

Carroll had turned out for Northern Ireland in a 2-0 defeat in Romania the night before, but caught the first flight home and then drove to Coventry to play in the match that was settled by Garry Thompson's 72nd-minute winner.

"It was a case of planes, trains and automobiles for Roy getting to the ground, but I just think that typifies us as a football club," said Derry.

"We are very selfless people and Roy wanted to play and do a job for us."

City had just been getting on top when the visitors scored and should also have had the chance to draw level in the 87th minute when Notts defender Hayden Hollis bundled Gary Madine over in the box.

But Derry felt his side had earned that chunk of luck. He said: "I'm delighted with that - we changed our system after I saw Coventry play on Wednesday night and I thought we did well.

"It was a really tight game. I said to the boys at half-time that this was going to be a one-goal game and we managed to get that with a fantastic finish.

"We've had those decisions given against us at times this season, but they do even themselves out.

"I am happy that it wasn't given this time and I am sure Steven will tell you a different story. I can understand that.

"Over the course of the 90 minutes, I felt the best team won."

Coventry manager Steven Pressley said one defensive lapse and one poor decision cost his team at least a share of the spoils.

He said: "I was disappointed because these are games that we have to win. There is no doubt about that.

"It was fiercely-contested. Our attitude was terrific and our work ethic was terrific.

"There was a real will to win but one mistake cost us the game, especially when we were the dominant team in the second half.

"These are games we can't afford to lose, there is no doubt about it.

"It's a lesson to us as one bit of naive defending cost us and, also, a moment where the referee refuses to give the penalty.

"I've seen it again and I'm not here to make excuses but it's an absolute stonewall penalty.

"I think it was a big call and he failed to make it. I spoke to him afterwards and told him I was disappointed because it was undoubtedly a penalty kick."

    Thoughts?
  10. Former Aston Villa midfielder Stiliyan Petrov 'like a little kid' again

Stiliyan-Petrov.jpg Former Aston Villa and Celtic midfielder Stiliyan Petrov says he feels "like a little kid" now that he is playing football again following his battle with cancer.

The 35-year-old Bulgarian was diagnosed with acute leukaemia in 2012 and retired in May 2013 , but is now playing Sunday League football for Midlands side Wychall Wanderers.

Petrov's treatment is due to end shortly and he says it is "incredible being able to smile again".

Brilliant story, so sad to this happen to someone who was doing fantastically well in his career. However, as always it's good to see him turning it in to a positive. I admire the fact he's playing for Wychall Wanderers because I suspect he could go higher, perhaps just beneath the Non League.

Hope he manages to step up and end his career having one last "big" day.

  12. Indonesia Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Warning

A large earthquake has hit the waters off eastern Indonesia, triggering the possibility of a tsunami in the region.

    170814-indonesia-boat-sinking-wide-1-762
There have been no reports of casualties or major damage

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 under the sea in eastern Indonesia sparked a tsunami warning and caused residents in coastal areas to flee their homes.

The quake struck at a depth of 28 miles (46 km) near the Maluku Islands, which are about a four-hour flight from the capital, Jakarta.
There have been no reports of casualties or major damage.

Indonesia's meteorological agency said a tsunami wave of 9 cm (3.54 in) washed onto the small island of Jailolo but caused no damage.

The quake was strongly felt in several cities in eastern Indonesia, sending many people to run from homes and other buildings, officials and residents said.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hopefully this goes by without problems, it's quite lucky that the earthquake hasn't caused major damage or worse the loss of lives. I genuinely hope the same can be said for any possible Tsunami.

I'm also surprised I haven't heard anything on the radio.

  13. So, if we beat Doncaster Rovers - Notts would progress to the semi final of the JPT.

Interesting situation could then occur, as Preston or Oldham have to take each other on. We could end up with the team we survived and retained our League One status, being Oldham or we could ultimately face up against the side we kicked off our 2014/2015 League One campaign against after surviving, I.E Preston.

@Pies4u highlighted the important of this competition, it's given something to help retain form and after the disappointment of seeing the Doncaster game(s) postponed.

Well, I am just eager to see how far Notts can go now.

    In the Southern Section

    Bristol City v Coventry City
    Leyton Orient vs Gillingham FC

Could Wembley being calling? Who would you prefer Preston or Oldham? Which side do you see progressing from the Southern section?

    Discuss folks. :)

  14. Chairman reserves special praise for popular goalkeeper...

Notts County Chairman Ray Trew has praised the attitude and commitment of goalkeeper Roy Carroll, after the custodian returned from international duty with Northern Ireland to play for the club in the 1-0 victory at Coventry City on Saturday.

Carroll, who joined the club on a free transfer this summer, has proved a revelation for Notts, putting in some eye-catching performances and establishing himself as a firm fans’ favourite for his passion and commitment.

However, rarely has that been more evident that when the 37-year-old turned out for Notts on Saturday, putting in another superb display, just hours after representing his country in a UEFA European Championship qualifying match away to Romania on Friday night.

The big keeper’s efforts have not gone unnoticed amongst the Notts hierarchy, with Chairman Ray Trew saying of Carroll: "I can’t praise Roy highly enough today, what he did went well above the call of duty, but epitomised everything that is right about Notts County at the moment.

  15. As it is the 11th of the 11th, I thought I would repost this poem, which is Notts County related so appropriate for this forum.

I will be taking a few moments of silent reflection today at 11am, its the least we can do for those that gave up their future for us.

This Poem Was Written By An Unknown Soldier During The First World War and Shows That Even In Those Dark Days Humour was Apparent, Besides Which Everyone Was Football Mad.

    THE BURNING QUESTION

Three Tommies sat in a trench one day,
Discussing the war in the usual way,
They talked of the mud and they talked of the Hun,
Of what was to do and what had been done,
They talked about rum, and-tis hard to believe,
They even found time to speak about leave,
But the point which they argued from post back to pillar,
Was whether Notts County could beat Aston villa,

The night sped away and zero drew nigh,
Equipment made ready all lips getting dry,
And watches consulted with each passing minute
Till five more to go then twould find them all in it,
The word came along the line to get ready!
The sergeant admonishing all to keep steady,
But out rang a voice getting shriller and shriller,
I tell yer Notts County can beat Aston Villa!

The earth shook and swayed and the barrage was on
As they leapt o'er the top with a rush, and were gone
Away into Hun land through mud and though wire
Stabbing and dragging themselves though the mire
No time to heed those who are following en route
Till stopped by a strong point they lay down to shoot,
Then through the din came a voice " Say Jack Miller! "
"I tell yer Notts County can beat Aston Villa"

The strong point has gone, and forward they press
Towards their objective in number grown less
They reach it at last and prepare to resist
The counter_attack, which will come through the mist
Of the rain falling steadily, dig and hang on
The word for support back to H.Q has gone
The air charged with moment grows stiller and stiller---
" Notts County's no earthly against Aston Villa "

Two " Blighties ", a struggle through mud to get back
To the old A.D.S down a rough duck board track
A hasty field dressing a ride in a car
A wait in a C.C.S., then there they are
Packed side by side in a clean Red Cross train,
Happy in hopes to see Blighty again,
Still, through the bandages, muffled "Jack Miller,
I bet you Notts County can beat Aston Villa! "

  16. A warm PoN welcome to @pokerpie, I hope you enjoy being part of this great community. Please come and tell us about yourself if you have time, it's great to get to know new members.

  17. Onwards and upwards.  Whilst a bit of gloom surrounded meadow lane on Sunday evening, and not all of it was post-bonfire-related, things could be worse...

Fans of the Sky Blues have been through the proverbial in recent seasons, and - despite being "sent to Coventry" having positive connotations since their return to the Ricoh - their FA Cup exit at home to Worcester must rank as a new recent low.

Was that their "Havant a clue" moment?

    So - links between us two clubs, think there's a few, so I'll start with a trio;

    - Brian Kilcline

    - Leon Best

    - Dele Adebola.

    Over to you...

  18. This is so cool.

Wonder what a Comet has to offer.

    Anyone else interested?

  19. The welcome to @DangerousSausage thread, has had me reminiscing about bygone days, and I have just relived a trip we often took on a weekend.

Starting off in Krefeld Germany, we used to go on a pub crawl to Dusseldorf. Some distance and not a drink driver in sight.

We would have a couple of scoops of beer before jumping on a tram bound for D-Dorf. Fortunately there were plenty of stops along the way, so the journey was to alight at each stop, and as luck would have it, there was always a bar or outlet within sight that sold beer.

Off we would go, have a beer, use the facilities and then keep an eye out for the approaching tram... this would continue all the way to the Altstadt in Dusseldorf, where the party would continue in earnest with a fine night on the town.

The only flaw tot he plan, there were plenty of sleeping squaddies on the Dusseldorf Station platforms waiting for the first zug back to Krefeld the following morning.

    Those were the days indeed...

Does anybody have any other mammoth pub crawls they do, have done?

  20. As it says, ex Pie Ben Burgess has qualified and become a teacher, some points in this article do him credit...

Walking away from a contract, rather than warming up the physio's couch... how many would have taken the money option?

Fair play to him, and I hope he does well.

  24. Alan Johnson Won't Run For Labour Leader

The former Home Secretary says he will not challenge Ed Miliband, who insists there is no crisis over his leadership.

Alan Johnson says he won't fight for the Labour leadership

Labour MP Alan Johnson has ruled himself out of any bid for the leadership of the Labour Party.

The former Home Secretary used a column in The Guardian to explain why he would not challenge under-fire Ed Miliband.

"I have never stood for the leadership of my party - and for the avoidance of doubt, regardless of the circumstances, I never will," he wrote.

"Ed Miliband is entitled to expect our loyalty.

"I believe that he is the only party leader who can promise real and lasting change, rather than a return to business as usual. He is the only political leader who can stop a retreat from the consensus of decency that has traditionally characterised Britain’s role in the world."

Oh Dear. Not sure Ed is up to the job. In fact I don't think I ever was. Another stint for David C then...
