New head coach Martin Paterson

Featured Replies

Martin Paterson is a bit of a surprise after all of the speculation & conjecture, but the owners have appointed him, so I guess we should all get behind him & give him a chance.

My concern is that although he has a lot of EFL experience as a player, he hasn't had much experience as a Manager/Head Coach.

No disrespect to MP, but he couldn't have been our first, second, third or 4th choice. The head coach role at Notts is limited. I couldn't see a high profile coach taking the reigns. I wish MP all the luck in the world. He's going to need it.

I don't think we can speculate if Martin Paterson was our first or whatever choice, because we don't know how the board thinks; it's certainly never as straightforward as we do ourselves. The appointment is a bit lackluster, but all we can do is hope Paterson can prove himself. The Reedtz haven't really made a "bad" appointment so far, so we should give this some time to see what happens. Besides, nobody would have predicted Ian Burchnall or Luke Williams as our head coaches; Paterson does seem to fall within this background.

It's why I don't get my hopes up about potential incoming players or head coaches, because you are leaving yourself wide open to feeling disappointment.

I am fully prepared to give Paterson my 100% support; I will acknowledge that he might need time to fully get settled, but I am hoping we see early signs of a strong leader. I can't sit here and write anything that makes it seem like I want him to fail, because I don't. I am slightly disappointed, because part of me thinks we could have just stuck with Stuart Maynard since we gave him such a long contract. Yet I am hopeful that Paterson will prove to be decisive during games and try to win them, not being afraid to make those important changes.

Let's try to reserve our judgment.

He needs a lot of luck as his track record is patchy at best and has only 20 matches at Burton as experience.

Let's hope he gets off to a good start before the keyboard warriors star to circle.

Fingers crossed 🀞 he's a rough diamond that just needs a little polish.

Let's not forget. Sam Slocombe as been appointed to a coaching role along with Andy Edwards.

Sam will be First Team Coach & Andy will be Assistant Head Coach.

I'm really pleased for Sam, he deserves it and I wish him lots of luck. Dam staying gives the coaching department continuity & I think he can be a good bridge between the players & Martin, the new Head Coach.

Andy Edwards has been coaching the England under 20s so he as plenty of experience, so the coaching team is being built under Martin, which gives a lot of encouragement.

So I’ve just sat through the Denmark v France U21 game for absolutely nothing, oh well.

I really do think that after the statement the board put out a couple of weeks ago that they had a more exciting candidate lined up and for whatever reason that didn’t happen so now we have dear old Martin, well let’s wait and see I will back him 100% and give my full support as always while he is our head coach but am I excited? In truth no, but time will tell.

Martin Paterson’s Black and White Army!

Good luck to the new man and welcome back Sam Slocombe - he wasn't gone long was he?

I feel pretty underwhelmed with this. While Burton in L1 is a tough gig (and, despite the less than stellar record, he did keep them up), there's nothing in his record that gives me confidence that he'll be successful as HC. But then, the same was true of Luke Williams, who even had a relegation to his name. Hopefully our new DoF has made a good call here.

Other thoughts:

  • Given some of the names that were being bandied about online, someof our fans would have been unhappy whoever was appointed. Part of our supporterbasehascompletely lost touch with reality.

  • Given ask the speculation about Steffen HΓΈjer, the timing of this announcement, within seconds of Denmark U21s going out, is curious.

Good luck to him but could we not have done better?

I'd argue Notts are in the top 50 or so clubs in the country in terms of fan base, profile, history. Not a huge boast. Take the Premier league clubs out of that equation as that's really a world league with very few English managers, same goes for the top clubs in the championship. So we should be able to attract one of the top 25-30 English coaches. Is Martin Paterson one of them?

Andy Edwards should be the assistant. It feels like the sort of help Stuart Maynard should have had when he was here. I’m not sure this is the best choice we could have made. Still, I’m glad that Sam Slocombe is staying on as a coach.

Let’s just hope Martin Paterson doesn’t think it’s going to be a walk in the park and puts in the work to get the results we need.

Andy is Assistant Head Coach & Sam is First Team Coach.

All a bit weird, no idea what to think because it really is so unexpected. Just on Paterson alone, I would never have picked him. When Luke joined, he was part of a very successful team at MK, then Swansea and he had been coaching since his 20s. Equally with Stuart he’d over-achieved with a part-time low-budget Wealdstone team. I don’t feel like I’ve got much to go with Paterson. It says he kept Burton up, but they were 17th and 5 points clear when he was appointed. They finished 20th and 2 points clear in the end so it was more a case of the teams below were just worse…

Then we’ve got the formation of the technical board… That could well have put some coaches off as it could come across as a tad overbearing, especially as it now features Chris and Alex. I thought the best thing about them so far is how they've seemingly been able to select pretty decent coaches and then let them get on with it, now it sounds like they are going to be involved a lot more than they have been before.

From the statement this sounds like this was always going to happen and it's just now is the time. So far all the data and the model has definitely aided us, but it can’t replace a good coach. Someone who gets on the grass, communicates, motives and actually puts in structures, the way of playing and ultimately makes the players better.

It’s going to go one of two ways, it’ll work we’ll be amazed and I’ll never question the Brothers again or it’s going to be a case of data overload and we’ll have a poor season.

It is what it is, and there’s not much we can do now. Everyone deserves a fair chance and the support to do their job. This might not have been the choice people expected, but even if the club had gone for someone like Des Buckingham, there’s no guarantee he would’ve been the right fit. I just hope the decision to bring in Martin Paterson was properly thought through, and not something rushed after missing out on someone else. I’m sure that’s not the case, but there is that doubt.

The timing of the appointment seems a bit odd to me, it was announced just after the Denmark v France u21 match finished, as soon as I saw an announcement I thought it was going to be the Danish u21 manager as they had been knocked out of the competition.

When I read the announcement I was very disappointed.

Martin Paterson’s Black and White Army!

Like I’ve said, when we’re being linked with the likes of Luke Williams, the Danish Under-21 manager, and others, it’s always going to feel like a letdown if the final choice doesn’t match what fans were hoping for. The Reedtz brothers haven’t let us down, though. Every time people question them, they keep pushing Notts forward. They’ve built something special.

Maybe the one thing they could’ve done differently was back Stuart Maynard the same way they’re backing Paterson. But that’s easy to say now, looking back. It could even be that they’re putting more focus on the coaching team this time because of what happened before.

The success of Denmark’s Under-21s might have made Notts think again, and maybe the new head coach was their back-up plan. But I don’t really believe that’s how it played out.

You’d hope people would give the new man a fair shot. It’s only right to see what he can do before rushing to judge.

It’s baffling how quickly some people leap to doubt the Reedtz brothers, often throwing out wild assumptions before the dust has even settled. Sure, the new managerial appointment might not match every fan’s wishlist, but casting judgement before a single ball’s been kicked feels premature. I get it, there’s a natural anxiety that comes with being a Notts County supporter, especially after all we’ve endured over the years. Still, we’ve got to give people a chance before writing them off.

What really grates is how swiftly the mood turns against the owners. Anyone who’s been following their stewardship can see they’ve been putting in the graft for a sustainable future. It’s valid to wonder whether this decision was financially driven, but branding it as a sign of decline does them a disservice. The progress we’ve made, climbing out of the National League and competing to return to League One, has been built on the solid foundations they’ve laid. Let’s not lose sight of that amidst a bit of uncertainty.

I still feel like the club or media team has caught us off guard by announcing the appointment just after the Denmark game ended. It doesn’t sit right with me. It’s a strange time to do it, but I’ll still back Paterson. He deserves the support now he’s in the role.

What annoys me is that if this had nothing to do with Steffen HΓΈjer, the club could’ve waited until tomorrow. There didn’t seem to be any rush.

Good luck, Pies.

I hope this appointment works out better than it seems on paper. It’s hard to judge without proper experience, but Martin Paterson looks like he understands the game well, and that counts for something.

He always came across as someone who wanted to win. If he can bring that same drive into management and get the team playing with confidence, things could really click.

The team was already exciting to watch, and with his approach, you might see even more attacking football this season.

I've had chance to think about it and if you push past the swathes of negative reaction on reddit or on the bbc because he didn't have a very good win ratio with a poor Burton squad, he hasn't had a chance really. Burton took a punt on him in a league above us, so he at least deserves a bit of time here. People will calm down after being somewhat blindsided and if he gets a couple of wins and a couple of players in that we all can get around, it will be quickly washed away.

Martin Paterson just might bring the fight, determination wining mentality we've been lacking. This video when he was at Tampa Bay Rowdies as a player seems to indicate this might be the case.

Burton Albion looked the most likely to be relegated from League One, they were very poor and never looked capable of staying up. Their fans are being quick to dismiss that Martin Paterson played any role in that, putting it down to other teams losing, but he managed to get the points from a team that looked very unlikely to pick anything up. Notts aren't a struggling team, we are making progress in League Two, and it's been steady.

I would have liked to see the board appoint someone who would be less divisive among the fans, just as a way to get back the unity.

Paterson still deserves a fair chance, and so far he has shown interest only in our club. We have to try to give him time and avoid early judgment, at least to the point of getting behind him. Every new manager deserves the support of fans from the outset. I hope we see positive signs early on in the new season.
