Notts County suffered their first defeat of the season at Meadow Lane, falling 1-0 to Gillingham in a closely contested affair. Speaking on BBC Radio Nottingham, Notts County correspondent Mark Stallard shared his thoughts on the match, emphasising the importance of taking chances, especially in tight games. During the post-match analysis, David Jackson, from BBC Radio Nottingham, opened by reflecting on a pivotal moment in the first half when Notts County full-back Nick Tsaroulla found himself in a promising position. “My mind keeps going back to earlier in the game with the Nick Tsaroulla chances,” Jackson said, noting the team’s ability to get in behind Gillingham’s disciplined defence. “You kind of thought, well surely they'll break that down again and get a goal eventually, but of course it never materialised.” Stallard was quick to agree, recognising that such missed chances often determine the outcome of matches. He noted, “Absolutely, and again, taking your chances is key in football matches. Very small margins separate games, you know, a lot of weeks of the season. Not every week can you go and score three and four goals, even when you've got the sort of potency that Notts possess, the quality of play.” Despite Notts County’s dominance, with 70.5% possession, the Magpies struggled to make their control count on the scoreboard. Stallard singled out Tsaroulla’s chance, as well as another from George Abbott, as key moments that could have changed the complexion of the match. “When you get your chances, you have to take it. Nick Tsaroulla, and George Abbott with those two chances - had they taken that, we got in front. You get in front, it then gives a different dynamic to the game because Gillingham are behind, they have to chase something out of the game.” Gillingham, known for their defensive solidity, executed their game plan perfectly, frustrating Notts County’s attack and staying compact throughout. Stallard acknowledged their approach, saying, “Although I was really impressed with the visitors, I have to say, although Notts played well, and if they'd have taken their chances, obviously it would have been a different game. But I thought they looked solid, they looked like everything we'd expect them to be.” Elliott Nevitt’s goal in the 38th minute proved to be the decisive moment, with Gillingham making the most of their limited opportunities. Stallard praised Nevitt’s clinical finish, noting, “The composure they took their chance, Elliott Nevitt when he got his opportunity took it really well.” The first goal, according to Stallard, was always going to be crucial in such a tightly contested match. “That first goal may have changed the game completely,” he said, suggesting that if Notts County had struck first, the outcome could have been different. Had the Magpies taken the lead, Gillingham might have been forced to abandon their defensive posture and play a more expansive game. Stallard’s analysis also touched on the overall resilience of the Gillingham side, who showed why they have one of the most formidable defences in League Two. “You can only play what's in front of you, Gillingham played the game well and kept Notts really at arm's length,” he concluded. Ultimately, while the defeat was a setback for Notts County, Stallard’s analysis served as a reminder of the small margins that can define football matches. Despite their best efforts, the Magpies were left to rue their missed opportunities as they look to bounce back in their next fixture. i dont think we need to dwell on the missed chances, but mark stallard is right and goals change games. just like poor officials which was the real talking point. i was hoping that would be pointed out when i came home after the game listening to the radio but it seems only bbc radio nottingham discuss controversial moments when its forest. its a bit disappointing, but mark stallard is right with his comments. i know he spoke about it during the game, but it was absent at the end.5 points

It’s always tough to see a game slip away, especially when Nick had such a golden opportunity. We dominated the match and created plenty of chances, but Nick’s miss was particularly unfortunate. Stallard is right about Tsaroulla and Abbott needing to take their chances, but Nick’s miss stands out. Gillingham made it difficult for us, and once they scored, they shut down any openings. We have the quality to break teams down, but today just wasn’t our day. The most frustrating part is knowing that Nick’s chance could have been the difference. These games are crucial in a promotion race. Still, it’s a learning experience, and hopefully, we can take those lessons into the next match.4 points

Gillingham weren’t that good. Defensively, they blocked some chances, but it was critical at the cost of our attacking play. Notts were unlucky at times. It’s easy to miss some good opportunities when playing in a high-tempo game. It happens all the time at the top levels, so I don’t think we need to worry about those misses. The main thing to rethink about this game is how we handle poor officials. I think if Jodi Jones hadn’t gone off, we would have scored before Sam Austin’s ruled-out goal.4 points

As you go through Life Don't you get asked some Daft Questions? For example. When you go to the Doctors, what the first thing a Doc asks you? Hello how are you today? And you can bet you answer or have answered. Fine thankyou. They why the hell are you at the Doctor's? You're off on holiday, as you go through Customs they ask As anybody you don't know put anything in your bags? I Don't Know anybody I Don't Know. Or as a Stranger given you anything? I once went on a Stag Weekend to Amsterdam. So what's the Daftest Question, You've been asked?3 points

I think this match really shows how football is often decided by small margins. Notts controlled possession, but it felt like Gillingham were always comfortable. They didn’t allow many clear chances, and when they got theirs, Nevitt was clinical. It’s a hard pill to swallow, especially since we looked the better side for long spells, but possession doesn’t win games, goals do. Stallard’s analysis of Tsaroulla’s chance is spot on. That moment, along with Abbott’s, could’ve changed the entire dynamic of the match. If we take the lead, Gillingham would’ve had to open up, but we just couldn’t take advantage. It’s something we need to work on if we want to stay in the promotion race.3 points

Excellent from Mr Stallard as usual. I still think Platt should have slid in with a block rather than staying on his feet. We move on.3 points

I love to hear Mark Stallard's analysis. He is so good at picking through the Notts performance post match. I think he is absolutely correct with his analysis. Notts didn't play poorly in this game, they didn't play to their best, but any other day they could have easily won this match It was unfortunate that the chances didn't fall to Didzy, Crowley or Jones otherwise I'm sure they would have buried those chances. I won't dwell on the goal ruled out for offside & the penalty that wasn't given, but another day & another Ref things may have been different. There are positives to take too. The Notts defence was solid again, Bedeau showed that he will be a big player for Notts this season. And Notts did create plenty of chances against a side that will be up there at the season's end. Onwards we go to Morecambe next Saturday.3 points

As @Fan of Big Tone is on holiday, I've continued his chat thread for him this week. Good afternoon everyone. It's a miserable murky Monday here with occasional rain, & a little windy. Looks like being an at home day. Maybe watch a DVD later. Just bought an Errol Flynn collection. Think I'll watch "The Adventures of Robin Hood" I good old swashbuckler film will brighten up the day.2 points

i have no issue with harry kane and if he is selected to play, when hes not doing well then its a managers problem. england fans like to pick at players, support is not easy to give by some but the moment success is had, then they love it and try to shower themselves in the glory. its silly. we should encourage and support our players, no matter what.2 points

Very disappointing result, though as a team we played ok. Looks like sometimes we are our own worst enemy with some decision making, especially in the final third. But overall it is a slight knock back and I'm sure the cohesion will come.2 points

I wish Jodi Jones all the best. I don’t want to speculate on his injury as I’m worried it could be serious. I’ll wait for the news to be shared, then come back to share my thoughts. It didn’t look good at all.2 points

I hope he will be okay. I am sure whatever injury it is, we’ll look after him and he will come back stronger. We looked after Cal Roberts. Jodi will want to return to playing when ready, I am sure.2 points

So I'm chatting to a Neighbour and he says I'm having Sex at 66. I live at 64, but I'm having Sex at 66. So I'm in the Pub chatting to this very attractive Young Lady. And What's your Name? I asked Carman. Oh is that name from your Mum's or Dad's side of the Family? Neither. I made the name up because of the two things I Love Cars and Men. What's Your name? she asked Beer P***y.1 point

I hope you enjoy watching the DVD, Robbie. I keep thinking about watching something at night, but I tend to struggle to find something that interests me. One thing that keeps jumping out is - "Trapped in Paradise". I'm taking today, a little slower. I need to finish off my prints and I forgot to publish a Notts Alumni yesterday. So, I'll reset and start again on the Sunday coming up. I don't feel unwell, but I have done something to my throat as it's sore, and I sound croaky. I think I need to rest my vocal cord. A weekend of shouting, chanting and singing (at home too) hasn't been a smart choice.1 point

@Robbie we had a thing for signing players related to famous players, in some form or another. he was very poor from my memory. only good relation i can remember is thomas ince. he looked great and i wished we could have signed him whilst his dad was the manager. paul was a rubbish manager tho. jack barmby was good, his dad was a very good player. it did not pass down.1 point

its a good signing for boreham wood, issue for me is not his ability or how he performs but he just has not settled. the aberdeen move seemed like a dream move, but i think it happened to early for him. he would have done better to sign for a league two team, get minutes and more experience and stay settled for a few seasons before making the step up. he never seems to settle, so how does consistency come? stockport did not really make use of him, same at colchester. this is his chance to do that.1 point
-
Just 98 appearances for 8 different clubs over a 7 year period. That statistic demonstrates to me that he was never fully settled at a club or simply wasn't good enough with the clubs he played for. Lots of youth players look very good at youth level but never go on to make it at senior level. His time at Notts was unspectacular too.1 point

It was a nightmare at times, the chances Notts had that just wouldn’t find the back of the net. Then Gillingham scored and the game started to fall apart. Notts played well. Sam Austin’s goal furthered the horrible dream-like feeling as I noticed nothing wrong and to see it disallowed is just crazy.1 point

It is a worry with several players injured already. The squad is definitely stronger and therefore can counter the impact of injured players better. But still, after watching yesterday's game, it still seems that the key players to hold the ball and drive forward are few, such as Jones, Crowly and Tsaroulla and with one of them potentially out for a bit, do we need more players to take up this mental and attitude of driving forwards?1 point

From the beginning of the match, Worcester piled on the pressure for long periods in the first half, however the Notts back line held firm. Worcester had a couple of chances they could have done better with, but Notts women are much more organised this season & they demonstrated grit & determination to keep Worcester out in that first half. Notts came out in the second half & Qaintance ratted the nar for Notts in the 47 th minute & Notts were on top at that stage. Notts got the deserved breakthrough in the 65 th minute when substitute Russell crossed for HARDY to volley home. Notts got a 2nd in the 78 th minute when KNOTT got the final touch from a corner by Brooks. Worcester got a goal back in the 81 st minute. There were some nervous moments before the end, but Notts held out & get their first away win this season. This was a very good win on the road by Notts Women against a spirited team that had been promoted last season.1 point

Wasn't there questions asked about the attendance in Notts match at Bradford Last Season? Stating that there was No Way that many fans were present in the Official Attendance Figures. And the answer was that Bradford had added all their Season ticket holders the match figures regardless of those fans being there or Not?1 point

I have looked back at the tackle, which was a fair challenge. The Gillingham player won the ball, but he did go through and clatter Jodi Jones, which you could say was reckless. I think it was knowingly done, but well-timed. I can’t complain about it. Jodi was holding his lower leg, and his socks were pulled around the area he was holding. It looks quite serious, but we can only speculate. I think he will miss several games if we are lucky. The worst scenario is that he will be ruled out longer than Curtis Edwards has been.1 point

I think we should have played Jevani Brown from the start. He might not have made much difference on goal, but there is every chance that he could have worked well with David McGoldrick. How poor at times was Didzy on the ball? He almost got us punished before Gillingham had scored. It wasn’t his best performance, and I feel it shows why he can’t play week in and week out. Although, we didn’t have many options, and it reinforces the belief that we need more support in the attacking department. I think our passing at times wasn’t all that good, which Gillingham capitalised on. I don’t think they were class, just a very good team that defensively hung onto a lead I don’t think they deserved. I do feel their goal was offside, but what can we do? There was no need for the Gillingham players to confront the assistant who later flagged Sam Austin’s goal as offside. The officiating was that poor, I wouldn’t blame people for thinking some sort of match-fixing was going on, but I don’t think it was that. I think the officials crumbled to everything Gillingham wanted and went against us when given the chance. Some odd calls throughout the game, but Austin’s goal was perfectly fine.1 point

@Turkey_Twizzler mentioned this: Firstly, I hope Jodi is okay. He looked concerned and barely able to walk, he wasn't as such just limping but not walking on his left foot. The support will most likely help with compression and support. The crutches will just help him avoid putting too much weight on his injury, or putting his other leg/foot in danger due to compensating how he walks. We can't really read into this, just as to how serious the injury is. There's more negative signs from how he got up, dropped to the floor. He sat for a moment before attempting again, only to hobble afterward. It could be a potential sprained foot/twisted ankle. It didn't seem to be the actual "leg" which is a potential good sign, even though this isn't ideal.1 point
