Superstitions have become the part of every day life, some people and cultures believe in them while others think they're a load of Nonsense. So if you refuse to wear a certain colour or are a Triskaidekaphobic , lets look at some strange and in some cases Gruesome Superstitions. Most Superstitions come from the Medieval Era., for example the Colour Green is associated with Witches and poison and even today in Motorcycle Racing some riders refuse to wear the Colour Green because it's considered bad luck. The Irish on the other hand consider Green to be the Colour of Growth and Prosperity. Having Green hoops as part of their shirt colouring certainly, doesn't seem to have done Celtic any harm.
A Triskaidekaphobic on the other hand is a Person with the Fear of the Number 13. Why ? The reasons behind this Superstition is the fact at the Last Supper, there were 13 people present and Judas was the 13th Person to take his place at the table. Another story from Norse mythology states that 12 of the Gods were having a Feast in Valhalla, when Loki the God of Mischief (who hadn't been Invited) gatecrashed the Feast, thus becoming the 13th God present. Loki convinced the Blind God Hod to shoot an arrow tipped with Mistletoe at his Brother Balder. Balder the God of Happiness and Light was killed as Mistletoe was the only thing that could kill him (that's another Story). Balder's Death began Ragnarok the end of the World, and the Death of the Gods. Although it is believed if you have a Tattoo of the number 13 it can be an antidote to Bad Luck.
Friday is also considered an Unlucky Day, as Jesus was Crucified on Good Friday. So when Friday 13th comes around it is considered Bad Luck in many countries. An Antidote to the Bad luck of this day and date, is to turn round clockwise three times then Spit over your left shoulder.
In some Medieval Cultures if a Woman was having trouble getting Pregnant, it was believed that if she rubbed the Sperm from a Hanged Man into her Belly, before she and her Husband made love, this would help her Conceive. To finish on a Lighter Note, in Columbia it's believed if you sit in a Chair and can feel the body warmth of the Person who sat there before you, you'll end up with a Boil On Your Bum.

A very interesting story @Wheelbarrow repair man There are strange superstitions all over the World in different Countries with their different ways & traditions.
For instance in China, The biggest superstition in China revolves around the unlucky number four (4), or tetraphobia, due to its pronunciation being very similar to the word for "death" in Cantonese and Mandarin.
The number four can be left out of phone numbers, floor levels & product names.
Interesting Superstition @Robbie. To slightly elaborate on the number 13 in a Poll 14% of People refuse to stay on the 13th Floor of an Hotel and 9% demanded a New Room if they were booked into Room 13. While talking of my writing of this thread to a friend he reminded me of a story, from our school Days. That being one girl pupil in a cookery class Refused Point Blank to make Chelsea Buns, convinced it would bring Bad Luck to her team Tottenham.
If Notts are trying to keep Jatta, like turning down offers or asking for a big fee, then why let his agent stir things up? It doesn’t make sense. If he wants to go, just say it. It’s better to be honest than to keep everyone guessing.
I don’t get why the club stays quiet. If they said we’re short on money or need to sell players, fans would understand. But instead, it’s all whispers and guessing. Notts are really good at letting rumours fly around for ages.
I’m not saying they should talk every time something small happens. But when it’s a big deal, and loads of fans are wondering what’s going on, it would help to explain things properly.
The media is meant to tell fans the truth. But our club, like loads of others, hides behind a mask. It’s like they’d rather let made-up stuff spread than just be real with us. That’s not fair. It feels like they don’t trust us enough to tell us the truth.

2 hours ago, DangerousSausage said: Agents can't break the rules, but they're employed by players, not clubs. An agent isn't breaking the rules by trying to get a move for his client, and the player will hardly complain either if he gets a glamour move and a big pay rise out of it. It's part of the game unfortunately and there's only so much the club can do.
If the injury was fake, then the agent would be doing something wrong. I’m not saying it definitely was, but if it was made up, that’s not fair.
We don’t know for sure, but if it wasn’t Notts who said he was injured and it turns out to be a lie, then someone should look into it.
Things like this can make people lose trust, even if it’s hard to prove. It could still be possible to find out the truth.
If it’s all sorted now, maybe the best thing is to keep an eye on the agent and hope Jatta listens more to his team mates who want the best for him.
@KingofCounty, I think lots of fans believe it was the agent’s idea and that Jatta wasn’t really injured. It sounds a bit dodgy to me. His agent has been saying silly stuff, like blaming the club because Jatta didn’t go to Germany. That’s just being childish.
He’s meant to be a proper professional, and most agents wouldn’t get mixed up in things like that. It’s not a good look.
Just look at what’s happened with Alexander Isak at Newcastle. There have been rumours that his agent tried to push him into a move, though it’s only talk at this stage. Still, it doesn’t look great for either of them. If that sort of thing happened in League Two, it would be even worse. Isak’s case is more extreme, with reports saying he threatened not to train. That kind of behaviour doesn’t help anyone and makes the situation messy.

i think he will only be honest in areas that wont put his neck on the line, so in terms of the players but even his comments after tranmere baffled me a little. just a few strange ways he worded things, and gave praise in areas that did not match my own eyes. i still like him, and believe he will open where possible.
Good morning it’s bank holiday Monday and the weather is supposed to be hot today. I’m going to the opticians for a check up, I’ve opted for the £10 extra eye exam too.

Good morning, it’s a lovely start to the day.
Saturday means matchday so safe travels to those making the journey. I’ll be listening on the radio hoping for a good performance but first I want to go a 5k walk with Mrs. T, I’ve paused my park runs for a while it was getting a bit much and I wasn’t enjoying it. I may start again when I feel up to it.
Have a great day whatever you are doing.
Good morning, we’ve got a cloudy day with the occasional sunny spells.
Our niece is popping in to see us on her way back from her trip to Finland she’s got a land rover that she sleeps in with two dogs, she’s a real action girl, ex army and fearless. It’ll be good to catch up.
Other than that no much happening, I might watch the red dogs against West Ham on the telly later.
Have a great day folks,

It's good you get where your parents are coming from. Years down the line you'll remember all the things you did outside and with friends, and too much unproductive time on devices will seem like a waste of a youth. I guess a healthy balance of all things is a challenge for all of us, but especially for the younger generations. When school restarts you'll get back to a normal routine
I use my phone when I just want to have a quick look or reply to something fast. It’s handy when I’m out and about or not near my computer. But I like using my computer more when I want to really get into the chats and look around the site properly. It’s way better with a big screen and easier to see everything.
The site still looks nice on my phone, which is good. But I’ll always pick my computer if I can. I’m not one of those people who’s always glued to their phone.
Also, my arms aren’t that long, so reaching for my phone isn’t super easy anyway!

Yes you would. It was a shambles.
Here's my photos from Wednesday night if you did want a look anyone: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10163780306689104&type=3
That's really shoddy @Dan, I've also heard some stories about that now. As the stadium is obviously only accessible from one side, you'd have thought they would have some proper infrastructure in place rather than just muddling through somehow.
In general I'm a fan of old grounds because they generally have that sense of history, even if the original stands are long gone. But the point of it all is ultimately to watch the game, and preferably without a restricted view. If we are going to have new grounds, I'd like there to be something unique about them.
Agreed. Give me an old ground every day of the week. I’ve been to Tranmere today, I’d choose going there every time over Anfield or Bramley Moor Dock.
Just watched the entertaining video's from todays match (vs Tranmere) on Notts County Talk.
Tom gave a run down on todays match plus his Player Ratings. However in the comments under Tom's
video , Notts Fans gave there opinions on their all time Favourite Notts Player. Of course there were many
different players from many different Era's. However one Fan stated Les Brad underneath it said Translate
into English United Kingdom. So I pressed the button and it came up
THE BRADDS.
That Really Tickled Me. For those Fans that Don't Get It. LES Is French For The, hence the Translation.
I must also mention George the other Co-Host on Notts County Talk. You also did a Good Job Mate, on Your Match Reaction Video.
I think this AI recreation of famous historical figures from the American Civil war, & bringing them back to life from photographs of the time is really cool. You also get to know a little about why they were famous or infamous, depending on your point of view.
I'm sure as the technology gets increased AI in this sort of context is going to revolutionise how we see these historical figures from the past.
I think it is a great way to look beyond what we see in in an old photograph or painting. We can just about see what the artist & photographer saw when the subject posed for them all those years ago.
For those who want to get some brief info about historical figures, through the ages it is a good learning resource in my opinion.
@Robbie and all PON Members interested in this sort of thing, there's a You Tube Channel called Royalty Now Studios. The Artist Becca is a very talented Artist who tells each subject's life story and uses AI to turn their Painted Portraits into what they would look like in Real Life and What the person would look like if they were alive today. It's just not Royal Portraits, but other Historical Figures and is Certainly Worth A Watch.

Ollie Palmer: Swindon sign Wrexham striker on two-year deal
- Show previous comments 6 more
I’d say it’s more about his wages than his age. He might be seen as too expensive for us. It’s one of those things where we see other teams doing well after taking a chance on a certain player. They go for it, and sometimes it pays off.
Meanwhile, we try to be clever with who we offer bigger wages to. Players like David McGoldrick are seen as worth it, while others aren’t. Then when we are trying to save money, we won't renew their deal with an amount that suites both parties. With Didzy, it was almost like here you go, that's our offer, take it or leave it.
Ollie Palmer or Paul Mullin. I don't care where players come from. They are proven goalscorers who I would welcome if Notts could afford them. But unfortunately at this moment, Notts clearly can't or won't.
We had a ready made proven goalscorer in David McGoldrick at the club, who hinted & hinted that he wanted to stay but Notts just let him go. For me, letting him go defied all logic after spending a considerable amount of money on a Hybrid, Pitch.
I doubt he'd have cost more than McGoldrick. He wasn't exactly in keeping with the model either, but we signed him when we had the chance.
Wild speculation mode on: how does anyone know we weren't in for Palmer? Perhaps Jatta had a move lined up that was dependent on us signing Palmer? It's a bit of a coincidence that Jatta is suddenly available for selection again the moment Palmer signs elsewhere, but I'm probably reading too much into it.
Last night I had a call on my mobile from a lady with a very strong foreign accent, I nearly hung up thinking it was one of those scam calls but because she mentioned my name I continued to listen, she was from Virgin Media and said my contract was soon to expire and because I had been a loyal customer for 9 years they were offering me a special deal, I was very suspicious still, for a few pence more on my bill, they were offering me a bigger television package to include sky sports, sky cinema and Netflix, a faster broadband and unlimited landline calls instead of just weekends.
I was still suspicious but because they weren’t asking for any money up front I went along with it and it turns out it was indeed true I’ve checked online and they’ve changed my package, I was paying for Netflix separate so I have cancelled that saving £6 a month, now I’m getting more telly, faster broadband and more landline minutes for less monthly payment.
I’m very pleased, how many companies reward loyalty these days?

@piedestrian . That is the same question I asked when the Doctor was appointed, How was the Doctor going to stop players getting injured? It was the wording of the Club's statement that gave the impression that's what the Doctor had been hired for and I have made my comment in the same vein, to show how poorly worded the statement was. Why hire a Doctor to sit on your Technical Board when surely the Notts medical Team should be capable of doing the same job? How much is the Good Doctor costing the Club? Because it he ain't going to be doing it for nothing. It seems that if the club get some extra Cash, instead of keeping it to help run the Club, they seem quite content to Spend it on some Frivolous Idea.
I think the Bromley game showed us how much we will miss Platt in defence. He is what we have missed for so long, a no nonsense defender who guards the goal, clears the ball, joins up with the midfield, and critically inspires confidence in his colleagues.
I'd go far as to say that Bromley's first goal was the sort of clearance he'd have dealt with, giving is all three points.
I think McDonald is a decent defender, as is Bedeau. Alijofree shows potential, but i want to see more.
It all shows how vulnerable we are.
Whilst, we are talking about injuries, Refs need to be protecting Jodi better. he's being targeted, by players who are having a free reign. I fear an injury will take him out again, unless he is given more protection.
Mai Traore’s injury seems odd; it’s never mentioned, and even when there is talk of injuries, it seems he’s become a ghost.

Hello, @DublinPie.
Welcome to the Pride of Nottingham, I am very pleased to see you.
The site can be overwhelming for some, and I don't know if people think asking for help puts people out or if they feel self-concious about not knowing. There's no need, we simply want fans to feel at home when browsing the site.
I will try to get updated guides on the site to replace when is now pre-dated, sorry @True Magpie.
But please do ask if you are unsure about something, we can throw things at you and it might not be all that useful. My starting tip would be to make the most of one of these pages.
Dashboard: https://prideofnottingham.co.uk/dashboard/
I created the dashboard because I felt PON needed a central hub, so the page has everything in one place. It's not there to discourage members from browsing the site, but more of quick glance.
Topicfeed: https://prideofnottingham.co.uk/topicfeed/
This is very useful if you want to get stuck in to posting, you can read, react and comment on discussions from this single page without ever needing to come off it.
Please do reach out if you have any questions, even if you ask here.
20 hours ago, Joshua said: Do you have "DublinPie" printed on your Notts shirt, and were you at the Bromley match at Meadow Lane last Saturday? I saw someone with that name on their shirt heading towards a car parked across from the club shop, and I did wonder if it might have been you.
I believe that's a fan called Brian, mate. He doesn't live in Ireland now, but does have DublinPie on his shirt.
Welcome @DublinPie! Take a little time to visit some of the main areas, within a few weeks you will be right at home. @Joshua and @Chris have given you some of those areas that makes it easier to get to grips with what is happening on PON.

It could be worse. The BBC might as well have its own version of You’ve Been Framed with the amount of slip-ups they make.
People used to want to work for the BBC if they went into media, and it has been a good place for people to learn their trade, but since they have gone all in on the TV licences, pandering to political parties, and focusing on being woke, nobody does now. Only those who want the money, because it's not somewhere you want to blow your reputation working with.
They are becoming an embarrassment to Great Britain.
Haha… Year of the Whores, celebrated worldwide! 😂😂😂
You’ve got to switch the subtitles on during the Notts interviews. Alassana Jatta becomes Alister Gatta. Brilliant.
I think we would all agree last nights win and the goals scored were very welcome. However we did look a bit disorganised at times, wide open in midfield. A better team than Shrewsbury would have exploited the wide opens spaces. With Jodi and his free spirit role we it's easy to lose our shape. Tsaroulla who played well as a whole, was caught out of position, which allowed for a free cross for their goal. Something we need to work on I feel.

are we playing to our strengths yet? martin paterson spoke about how he wanted the players to do this, and not only do we look out of shape at times. we still dont seem to have key players fit enough to play for 90 minutes. 5 games in we are seeing improvements, but most seem slow and counter productive with how we fail to defend. we struggle with headers when the defence dont have time to prepare and we dont defend as a team like we have previously done. the pressing to win the ball back or to get the secord or third ball back is missing.
In earlier games, I felt our centre backs were pushing forward too much, while the midfield and attack seemed to sit back too often. It left us a bit out of balance. We’ve looked better against Shrewsbury and Bromley, with signs of improvement. But defending only works well when the whole team is organised and ready for it.
Having seen every game so far, bar the home win against Shrewsbury Town and the Wigan Athletic cup game.
I think it's more communication that is hindering us, along with a lack of movement. When we are doing well, it's a lot more natural, but out of possession, it seems almost forced to make any effort. We have gone from being a team that can quickly intercept the ball and push on. To a team that loses it quite easily, it is a lot more indecisive as to whether we are going to try to win the ball back quickly, and those 2nd and 3rd balls are being chased like we would have under Luke Williams.
A fair case to the point of it being shape-related is a fair one, as we are very relaxed at times when it comes to keeping it.
When Kelle Roos has the ball either in his hands or at his feet, who often wants the ball? When we have conceded or almost conceded, who is reacting in the way that makes you think they are fired up and don't want to lose or draw?
There has always been an element to Notts being slow; however, previously in games where we have played well, we quite rightly deserve the 3 points. We have come back from setbacks and pushed. That winning mentality, along with the desire to make space and to win the ball back quickly, is currently missing.
This is bad news for Notts.
Apparently he has a back spasm, so he is out of the Notts squad against Bromley.

@piedestrian Things haven't been the same since Jason Turner. Of course, we will never know, but maybe, things could have been entirely different player wise at Notts if he was still around. Maybe some of the players that left would still be here & the communication between club & fans would have been better too.
Sound the alarm, Jatta was involved and running in the training session video from today! And yes I have already searched “can you sprint with a back spasm?” for those wondering, no not if it’s serious and in the video he looked more than fine to me.
Martin Paterson was asked about Alassana Jatta in his post-match press conference ahead of Tranmere Rovers.
These are my thoughts on what was said.
It was a dramatic night of Cup football on Wednesday evening when Grimsby Town of League 2 humbled arguably the richest club in the World, in a pulsating penalty shootout ending to their EFL Cup tie with Manchester United.
The Grimsby players held their nerve to win the shootout 12-11 after Man U had come back from being 2 down to draw 2-2 in normal time.
Grimsby had already made a great start to their league 2 campaign by currently standing 4th in League 2 with three wins & two draws from five games played.
Their win against mighty Man U will be remembered for ever by the Grimsby supporters & I'm sure it will set the club up well for the rest of the season.
The atmosphere around the club will be electric & the confidence will be sky high. Players & supporters will be very happy & fully united.
Lots of clubs do not give the cup competitions priority nowadays which is a surprise when you can see what a great result can do for a lower league club.
When the FA Cup begins I would like to see Notts give that competition the up most priority because a good cup run can make a massive difference in lots of ways as well as a massive financial reward
- Show previous comments 2 more
It would be Great if Notts managed to have a Half Decent Cup Run @Robbie . The Trouble is the Magpies never seem to get the Rub of the Green in Cup Competitions, regarding Top Opposition, I think it was when Notts were drawn away at Liverpool and at Home to Manchester City in the League and FA Cup Rounds were the last Premier League Teams the Magpies played.
@Wheelbarrow repair man I understand meeting a top six PL club in the 3rd Round, there will be an element of luck involved, & Notts have to get through two rounds before they can meet a PL club.
I think the quicker these players can gel together & the quicker Paterson can identify his best starting eleven is dependant on more game time which the cup competitions can give him as well as the league games.
The Case for Prioritising a Cup Run?
How about glory and the standing and respect of the club.
We enter only 3 competitions so why can't we take all of them seriously and try to go as far, or as high, in each of them as we can?
As you can tell, I'm a traditionalist here. I believe too many lower league clubs became infected and influenced by behaviours of the elite teams - resting players, picking your games and priorities, poo-pooing the domestic cups to chase the dollar. Teams down the league copied these behaviours without ever checking if their fans were on board with it.
Even now success in the cups is cloaked only in the language of money. To hell with that, I want to get to cup QFs for the respect and the glory. Those victories over Newcastle and Everton and the QF at Leeds were what made me a ardent Notts fan. I remember those great games under the lights not the money that was earned from them. I love the fact we made the FA Quarter-finals in 84 and 91, giving our best against the eventual winners in both cases, Everton and Tottenham. Again, as a fan, I don't give two hoots about the money - let Palmer take care of that, it was about the thrill of the run, the respect for the club and all the memories created.
I still think all of that is the reason to have cup runs.
I was one of the fans at the game trying to get our lot to sing, it was very depressing, but the more voices grew in number, the better the atmosphere became, and I firmly believe that the encouragement from our away end helped the lads perform.
A lot of people expressed that they were only going to see Anfield, and many thought we stood no chance.
It's fair to say I believe in cup magic, and the whole experience was really something special. Some Liverpool fans gave Jake a scarf; they took a photo with us as we both had our "Every Liddle Helps" t-shirts on, well Jake had his on underneath his Notts shirt.
I wasn't really happy with the amount of negative comments people told me about Liverpool, the typical "don't leave anything in sight or it'll be stolen." I felt that sort of stuff happens everywhere, but it did make me nervous as to what to expect. Most Liverpool fans that I came across not only made a fuss of Jake but were very inviting and friendly.
The game itself saw us come back and made it a memorable night.

I looked up the team sheet from that match: B Bialkowski, M Dumbuya, M Smith, G Liddle (c), E Stevens, J Campbell-Ryce, J Labadie, M Fotheringham, D Bell, C McGregor, Y Arquin Substitutes: F Speiss, G Tempest, C Thompson, A Boucaud, A Coombes, R Murray, R Nangle.
David Bell started, now there’s a player who I am amazed passed his medical! I just looked it up, he had four operations in three and half seasons prior to joining us. So yes his time with us went exactly as you’d have expected. And Adam Coombes coming off the bench to score that equaliser, he's now an absolute stalwart of the National League South scene.
Some good players in there too to be fair, I loved Bailkowski, Dumbuya, Liddle, McGregor and Campbell-Ryce all really good players for us in League 1. It was a great occasion, had the match happened today it would’ve gone straight to pens, maybe we’d have had a different outcome!

Martin Paterson: Notts County boss calls for squad streng...

Very good point @canuckpie Every head Coach we have had have players they have preferred over others. I thought the Technical Board would stop that sort of thing happening.
I don’t think it’s strange. He’s under pressure, and managers often say things like this when results aren’t going well. Martin Paterson probably knows how the club is handling recruitment. He might feel Notts aren’t looking for the type of player he thinks we need, and he could be hoping fans speak up more. Or maybe it’s just a way to shift focus because things haven’t gone our way. I do think we need a striker. Kelle Roos might be okay, but he’s not going to win awards or keep many clean sheets. Still, the defence has to take some of the blame too.
Good Evening and welcome to Master Mind. And our first Contestant Please. Your Name?
Martin Patterson
And Your Specialized Subject?
Stating the Obvious.
I Think this Proves Patterson Isn't the Right man for the Job. The Recruitment team don't have a Clue, and the Club need to ship players out who are Not League 2 Standard.
The energy price cap will rise by 2% on 1st October, I’ve taken Martin Lewis’s advice to ditch and switch. I’ve been with Octopus and was sad to leave them but I did a check on Martin’s Energy Club and if I switch to Outfox Energy I can save £13 a month. So I’ve started the switching process which was very easy.
If you’ve not joined the Energy Club it’s worth doing you just enter your usage (which you can find on your bill) and it will calculate which is the best/cheapest supplier to switch to, they will even do the switch for you with some suppliers and give you cash back in some cases too.

We are on a fixed tariff so it won't go up in our household for now. But I suppose we are only delaying the inevitable.
Fixed here, too.
Yet they find their ways of taking more money from you, one way or another. The prices can't be justified. Something needs to be done to make them fairer again, but for now we have to tolerate it because nobody will try to make a difference. What makes me wonder is my friends in America who can use air conditioning throughout the day, but in the UK we have to choose between when warming our houses is affordable.
It's not a problem during heat waves, but in the winter months it's awful when you spend silly money just to stay warm.
Paul Devlin's 30 yard volley on the turn still lives in my memory bank
Were any other PoN members at the game?
Yes, my grandfather Ray took me and my brother @william1984.
I think this is the game where we caught a supporter's coach opposite my uncle's arcade near Bobbers Mill Bridge.
It's a sign of old age, I am told, when you start thinking back on how your local area has changed over the years, especially from what you remember it being like as a child. You don't have to name the area our street names. If you wish, be vague about names, etc, especially if you still live in or around the same area and wish to remain anonymous.
I thought about starting this two weeks ago, after I overheard a conversation between a mother around 50 to 60 and her daughter, who I would say was in her late 20s.
My earliest memory of the area is from back when my parents lived down a cul-de-sac. I remember the majority of neighbours being friendly enough, and my brother and I would usually play in the front garden, usually with his Ghostbuster backpack water pistol, with which I tended to spray some of the neighbours for fun.
I remember visiting the doctor, and how my grandfather would drive us there and back. On occasion, Granny Pie (my mum) would walk to various nearby shops, and even at the age of, say, 7, I knew the majority of the shops very well.
After my parents bought their home together, I lived 5 minutes from a row of shops. It used to start with a church of some form, a chemist, an optician's a cob/cake shop, an old DIY store, a large convenience store, and another that was owned by a husband and wife. I don't really remember her very well; she could be nice but tended to complain a lot about the customers. His name was Reg; again, he was mostly fine.
In the front of their shop, they used to have all sorts of toys on display for sale, and as a child, I liked window-shopping. Saving up for something tends to be good fun.
By the side of Reg's shop, there was a PVC door which looked like it would take you to an apartment but was actually the local hairdresser's. That's where I would have my hair cut until I was about 14 years old; she sold the space and moved away to retire. Long-standing members might recall a story where she shaved all of my hair off.
Granny Pie wasn't happy, and I actually took the blame for that even though I said my usual, which "wasn't a skinhead." 😂
Down the road there was a newspaper shop; I used to cycle my bike there at times to check if they had certain sticker packs in stock, when Reg would only order a box once a month.
Further down was a larger row of shops. Starting at the very end, I recall a very small frozen food ship, which is now a "bring-your-own-wine" restaurant. To be fair, it has been for most of my life. Across the road there was another hairdresser's where I remember the women pulling at my hair when I was very, very young and making me so irritated that I wouldn't keep still.
Next to it, there's a post office that is still there. Across the road was a single newsagent, which stocked every drink imaginable, and the owner was a great guy. Unfortunately, he had a heart attack while I was working at a nearby care home. There were times he would let me get a drink even without paying if I had no money, not that I liked it, but he remembered me from my childhood and would offer very often as I walked back home.
My memory is a little patchy regarding some of the shops across the road again, but I do remember a card shop which had all sorts of items. Pic'n Mix, party supplies, you name it, they probably had it.
Then there was a Co-op, one of the smallest, and I never really liked it until I was a teen. Actually, before this, there's a chippy that is still there but obviously has different owners. It used to be my Grandfather Ray's favorite. I haven't been in there for years. Last time I was fetching some chips for Granny Pie, and Super was being awkward about us buying him some. 🥱
Next, there was a cake shop, which also sold cobs and freshly cut meat. It was very sad when it closed, as I had a lot of fond memories of going in, not just for a cake but because the staff were always super nice. Luckily, one of the staff members, who often spoke about wanting to train as a teacher, did manage to meet my son before it closed down. Jake would have only been a baby, and by that point it didn't sell much but cobs and cakes.
A little further up, there used to be a butcher's I only recall going in there a few times with Super; I never really liked the smell. Even now, it makes me feel like going off meat. After that, there was a shoe shop, and again my earliest memory of going in was convincing my mum to buy me a Micro Machines racing car.
It's run by a father and son team; I really hope the father is still alive. A few years ago, he was there, as I went there on purpose to get new keys cut. I also went to look for a belt for Super, but they sold shoes, bags, slippers, etc. Next to him, there's a barber's owned by a guy called Gaz. I used to get my hair cut by him until I was 17; I stopped going to him, but he was always very friendly.
Thinking back, what is now an Asian store selling fresh fruit. There used to be a really cool shop that sold toys and things; I remember getting birthday presents from there back in the day.
Much has changed; a lot for the worse. Numerous takeaway shops have emerged, yet most of them are quite mediocre.
What used to be a larger Co-Op nearby is a local ASDA from hell.
I think the area has massively declined; some things have improved, such as walking around, you don't stumble into so many ***kheads. You just end up living near them instead. Provided you stay to yourself, it's not an issue, but I wish my children could have grown up making more use of our garden.
I used to spend a lot of time in my parents garden, playing football and other sports. Spinning myself around, hassling Super to let him allow me to help him tidy the garden. Buying Granny flowers for the front garden, not just for Mother's Day.

3 hours ago, Fan of Big Tone said: @Chris off topic but when you mentioned micro machines it reminded me our late son used to collect them as a child, they are still in the loft, we were wanting to give them to his son (our grandson) but sadly we don’t see him now and have very little contact.
What about one of your other grandchildren?
I know the sentiment about passing things down in line, but your son will be living on with his siblings children. Repurposing items like jewelry or ornaments can be quite challenging. I hope you can find somewhere within your family, that they can be passed down too.
I don't live in the same area as I did when I was in my childhood. Areas can be different in their own ways but there is a constant that seems to be missing between neighbourhoods of 60 years ago & now.
As a boy I was brought up on pit estates where the tenants would be exclusively NCB employees. They were special neighbourhoods where everyone would know everyone else on the streets where we lived.
When I was very young, before my Mum started work, the back door always seems to be open. A neighbour would knock on the door for a chinwag & the kettle would go on the stove for the proverbial cup of tea with a biscuit to go with it.
My Mum would visit a neighbour in the same way too. This is something you never see nowadays. The sense of community just doesn't seem the same in this day and age. The back door is securely locked & I think that is the sign of the times no matter what neighbourhood you live in.
When I last visited the street I lived on from the age of 10 ,in Alfreton where I was brought up ,the thing that I noticed immediately was the number of cars. parked there. I used to walk that street to and from school and then there was probably a couple of vehicles parked at the most. Now there were cars parked on both sides of the road for the entire length. It must be a nightmare now for the school bus drivers delivering or collecting pupils every morning and late afternoon.
The main changes I've noticed in the area I've resided in for the last 40 plus years isn't so much the shops(which @Chris has already described) but the number of foreign residents here now.I walked to the local shops last week and realised how multiracial the area has now become.
Great news for British Athletics. Morgan Lake is the first British Female Athlete to clear 2 m in the High Jump.
I am sorry about this, but I'm working on upgrading one of the old resources, and it looks like I'm running into some glitches. This might happen a bit here and there, but I’ll do my best to keep the live site running smoothly and avoid any hiccups.
Thanks for your understanding!

i am glad the sites fine and that the bookmark app has returned, shame about the issues but not everything can be foreseen. just appreciate the update and explanation.

I do need to figure out how to set the server up with the site which would allow me to explain what is going on, but as a single person maintaining things, I have to choose how best to spend my time. If setting up the means for it to be detected automatically, it would make it easier for me to pop a short update as to what's happening. Then continue to fix things, but there's no way I would make it publicly known on social media.
Not because I don't value updating, but because it poses a big security concern.
I am and have always believed transparacy and accountability are important values. Most might not care for the updates I provide, but it's there for those who do and it's their for those who might.
Recently, a server update caused some issues for the site.
You might have noticed last Thursday we had some issues with errors; this is because Redis (a cache system) failed, and there were a number of issues preventing me from being able to fix it. Temporarily, I switched to a file-based cache while I investigated the issue.
Yesterday, a friend took the time to look into this issue with me, and he fixed the issue caused by the server's packet updates.
I didn't mention anything until now, as I wanted to wait for it to be confirmed as fixed, and usually giving it several hours will allow you to see everything is playing nicely again. So, Redis is now enabled, and the performance should be back to normal.
Have fun posting and making content! 😁

hello, @Norman Butler. welcome to the pride of nottingham. i hope you introduce yourself and join in.
Good luck to him, he earned that - making the play-offs is something on his CV, to go with what he did at Wealdstone. I hope him and Alves do well.
I think his strength is, as he says, on the tactical side - he does seem to have a good understanding of the game. Doubling down too much on this strength was his undoing at County IMO. He became too clever with his team changes and too much focus on game tactics seem to neglect all those other things which make for winning football - the psychological side, the aggression, the toughness, earning a shirt and the right to keep it.
Everyone is on a learning curve with what they do, so maybe he'll find this balance at York and get them back in the EFL. That will definitely be their target and expectation.
I've been looking further into this appointment, and Stuart certainly picked himself one Hell of a Challenge. Apparently according to York City Fans their Owner, buys players without conferring with his Head Coach, which seems the Previous Coach Didn't like and one of the Reasons he left, or was sacked sounds like a situation not unlike what's going on over the other side of the Trent. Good Luck Stuart, seems like you're gonna need it.
Stuart Maynard took on a tough job. He stepped in after a head coach who had led Notts back into the Football League. That was never going to be easy. He did what he could with the squad and the situation. I hope he does well at York City. He deserves a fair chance.
