What line-up should Stuart Maynard opt for? What will be the key areas for the Magpies to get a victory? What do you think the final score will be?

I don’t view it as a criticism of the young players who were on the pitch when the goals started coming in. I also believe the penalty was more a case of their player pushing into Chicksen and then falling over. It’s challenging to keep up with games when there are numerous changes, and while some fans might see this as making excuses, for a young player it’s much tougher. Once a goal is conceded, it impacts how you play and it can be easier for the attacking team to capitalise on this. All things considered, it’s not a bad result.

I think we can safely say that we lost because Stuart drastically changed the side.

I wonder why Stuart can't change the personnel a few at a time in the second half so that the side is affected so much.

My question would be, How can one seriously find out the worth of a trialist if he isn't playing within a side full of first teamers?

Preseason Friendlies are to build up a Players fitness, time for New Players to get settled into their New Environment  and for the Head Coach to get an idea of the players he'll start in his First XI  once the League Season Starts and by Winning Games to Install Confidence and a Positive Attitude.

Leaking Goals was a Major Problem last season and new Defenders have been brought in to Stop the Rot. And yet 7 goals conceded in the Last 3 Matches  alone Is A Major Concern. So perhaps the Fault doesn't lie with the Defence more of the way Notts play. I don't know how many more times Fans are going to have to say this, until Richard Montague and Stuart Maynard Realize it.

THE NOTTS TIPPY TAPPY FOOTBALL "MODEL" DOES NOT WORK.

I would say a Majority of Players Don't like it as it goes against the way they normally play  and New Players are struggling to Adapt. Stuart Maynard does Not have very good Man Management skills. However left to his own devices he May be able to Find a Winning Formula. But I think there is to much  Interference  from other  Quarters that Stops him doing his Job Properly.

And for Fans not overly concerned with the Preseason Results, if memory serves, the Preseason before Notts were Promoted back into the EFL, the Magpies Didn't lose a Match. Therefore Winning becomes a Habit and a Team will carry that Winning Attitude Into The New Season.

As you rightly said, winning becomes a habit, and it also breeds confidence.

I cannot for the life of me, understand how anyone can say preseason games don't matter.

It's like when some managers are saying cup games don't matter. Every single game that Notts play has to matter.

It mattered to Boston Utd that they beat a league 2 club the other night.

I get the concerns about not having a starting 11 that would more resemble the starting 11 against Tranmere, I feel like this pre-season we’ve struggled more with injuries than is being revealed.

It’s not helped all the games have been away games so fewer fans have seen the team, most fans are relying on the club to bridge the gap and our media coverage is usually top notch but it feels like we’ve been fed scraps this season. The updates on the games have been minimal and highlights non-existent. I’m having to watch other teams highlights and interviews to try and gauge how we got on!

I’m still not overly concerned, yet… But I totally understand why fans would be concerned that we couldn’t score, but conceded against a team with 10 men. A post-match reaction from Boston would’ve gone some way to help calm and explain. I’ve heard we’ve been doing double sessions before games, so if that’s true it would explain why we seem to tail off as games wear on.

i partly wonder if its just stuart maynard trying to get a further insight on what changes work from off the bench, the team defensively was weak but against boston it should have been a closer result. people are saying that they scored for fun against peterborough and we should have fielded our strongest team but maybe we are trying to make sure the squad as a whole is on the right level amongst the squad?

there is no point having a bench of players who are not quite match fit.

  4. As the New Season approaches in the Wheelbarrow Repairman's house hold our thoughts has a Family turn  towards all things Notts County Things which we talk about around the dinner table. Here are a few subjects that have come up, and I wondered what Notts interactions come up at Fellow PON members meal times, regarding the Goings on at The Lane.

My Youngest Son isn't a Fan off the New Notts Home Shirt, from a distance he says it looks like an all Black Kit. If the Magpies play in white shorts at least it breaks up all Black appearance. He's in Favour of a Bold Black & White Striped Shirt.

Macca's Transfer came up (of course) My Eldest Lad did say at least Notts managed to hang on to Macca for the Full season, but if the old system of No Transfer windows had been put in place, and English Football still allowed Clubs to sign players all season long Macca may have Gone Sooner. I see his point only I'd Prefer to see No January Transfer Window. And have all Player deals done in the Off Season.

The Wife hopes the Magpies can have a better finish to this season, than they Had last season. She's not Sure if Notts will get Promoted but a top half Finish and maybe a playoff Place will be an Improvement.

I express my views on PON. And I have some Nagging Thoughts at the Back of My Mind. The Main One Being Stuart Maynard, something I have stated on the Website, I would think the opening Couple of  Months (Results Wise) will indicate if I've been worrying about Nothing. Another Concern is the Nest, now there is No Major Football Competition on will this effect the Club and Put a Strain on Resources? Because as of Yet No Announcement has been made by the Club, regarding what is going to Happen with the Nest. Also it would seem the Paddle Centre as been a Bit of a Dead Donkey. I've not read anything about it at all recently.

I remember the quiz, "Ask the Family" well. It would have a family of four with a boy and a girl and Robinson would ask them questions about all sorts of things.

The children were all well spoken, most likely went to private school, and of course they were very knowledgeable. The parents would have very good jobs.

The World was quite different then of course.

  5. If you want to watch Notts County matches live this coming season you need to subscribe to Sky Sports +

I’ve got a Sky Sports subscription via Virgin Media using a TiVo 360 box, I’ve had an email saying I can’t watch Sky Sports+ on my current set up but I can upgrade to Virgin 360 for free, I get a new controller posted to me and when it arrives I use it to upgrade via a link on the tv. I’ll lose my recordings but most of them are on catch up anyway.

So I’ll have Sky Sports+ at no extra charge, excellent.

Tiernan should be here at Notts fighting for a place in the Notts side. I put him ahead of Slocombe & Tiernan should be at least the second choice.

Sometimes a can't make out some of the Notts decisions regarding their players, & why some are deemed to be ok and some not.

If another team think that Tiernan is good enough for them, then why not Notts?

Notts were ok playing players that were clearly not good enough last season.

Instead of producing its own coins from raw steel, the Mint will now purchase 'blanks', plain discs, which have not been struck with the coin design, from abroad when stocks run out.

I don't get why we can't make more of the industries we have that are dying, why more thought can't go into thriving them. There's a YouTube channel that pays visits to companies that are in danger of dying off, it promotes the 'Made in Britain' aspect, and it's something we should really try to make sure continues.

The easiest decision is to stop, but is it the right call?

Once you stop, it's harder to return to doing it when those skilled workers are few and far between. This is a sad thing. :(

The most disturbing thing about not being able to produce our own steel in large quantities, is the fact that we have to now import steel to build equipment for our armed forces.

The game against Sutton tonight is going to test Stuart's tactical acumen to the full.

Sutton are a strong, physical side that have several tall players and they are very direct in their style too.

They are going to test Notts's defence to the full and Notts need to be on thier game for full 100 minutes if the game goes on that long.

I've come to the conclusion that the game tonight isn't going to be an easy one. It is going to be  very tense if the match is close going into the final quarter.

The Notts fans can make the difference tonight by shouting the roof off. We need to be that 12th man tonight for the team.

So we are now very close to the start of the season. Stuart Maynard has nine new players to work with.

He also has two more players that have recovered from long term injuries

So Stuart has 11 players that he has never managed in a league game. That's half the squad.

So Stuart now owns the squad. The ghost of Luke Williams has finally departed. There are no longer any excuses. Stuart Maynard now has to deliver.

The pre season games where the new players have figured have been somewhat dissapointing.

Stuart has the decide, which players are in the starting eleven in the first match against Tranmere.

He also has to decide how Notts will line up. Will it be a back three with wingbacks or a traditional back four?

Will he have a three or four man midfield, two strikers or just one?

Lots of questions to be answered.

One thing is certain, Stuart has to mould this squad into a cohesive unit that will be competitive this season. Will he be successful or not. The first half a dozen games should reveal all.

@Robbie I’m not saying he shouldn’t get the number 9 shirt, maybe he will, I’m just saying it’s not that important these days as @Wheelbarrow repair man says in the post above it’s an old fashioned idea that your best team has numbers 1 to 11, it’s all about squad numbers these days.

    3. TheSkipper

      TheSkipper

Given Jatta’s impressive performance in the pre-season, I believe he deserves recognition as our primary striker and should be awarded the number 9 shirt. While shirt numbers might seem insignificant, they can be used to instil confidence or boost a player’s morale. Some teams practice this, and players take pride in honouring it. I see no reason why we shouldn’t do the same.

    4. Chris

      Chris

I don't want to tempt fate, but we could give it to our highest earner and in that I mean, David McGoldrick. He already looks likely to be the vice captain (to my knowledge this hasn't been confirmed by Notts yet). I would rather Alassana Jatta or Cedwyn Scott get it, but Jatta has done remarkably well.

The numbers on shirts being given relevant importance, is a trick teams did to sell shirts, and it really doesn't mean much.

That said, I have said in the past that it would be nice to return the traditional way of numbers being given to important players, as the numbers 1-11 did actually mean something.

I do think on paper, he looks more like a cover and squad member signing. Yet, I haven't see him play and he may settle with us. Notts has worked well with players in recent years who have had injury issues.

To be frank, the signing seems quite ordinary. Given the depth of talent brought in during the transfer window, it’s hard to see how he’ll get a chance to play. His injury history and lack of football are concerning. The decision to sign him appears risky. Can we really afford to have a player sit out the season if the worst happens? It’s a bit disappointing, but I hope this feeling will fade once we see Robbie Cundy in action. I sincerely hope he turns out to be a good signing.

  13. The Departure of Macca from Notts at what seems a Ridiculous Low Price as tendered some Speculation, well it as with Me Anyway. This is just my thoughts on the Subject and this is just My Opinion about things. And this an Extension of what I have already commented on another Thread. It was Announced that Notts are in an Healthy Financial Position and that the Club Had No Need To Sell Off It's Star Players. It was also Stated that Notts had a Budget that could Cope Financially with Playing in League 1 and the Lower Half of the Championship.

The Announcement of the Purchase of the site to be turned into the Nest and the total Revamp of the Meadow Lane Pitch up to Premier League Standard, was met with Great Delight by the Notts Fans, however have these Projects come at a Price?  That being the Sale of our Most Prolific Scorer  Macaulay Langstaff   For a Paltry £750,000 ? Did  the Notts board Miscalculate the Budget for the their Two Ambitious Projects?  And  Did they Required Money Quickly  to cover an unseen or unexpected Expense and Selling Macca was their Way Out of a  Financial Problem?

This is of course is Pure Conjecture. But Unforeseen Expenditure Does Arise and Even the Most Astute Finance Personnel Can Sometimes Miss These Problems. What made Me think About this? The Speed in which Macca's Deal was wrapped Up. The Quote Macca made saying he Wanted to Help Notts into League 1. If the Club did Face a Money Problem, and Macca was Told by the Notts Board they needed to Sell him to get them out of a Difficult Position ? It Strikes Me that Macca is the Kind of Guy that would  Accept the Move  to Help The Club Out.

I believe that Macaulay Langstaff requested and wanted the move to happen. He’s performed well in his two-year stint with us, with many memorable moments. It’s a sign that we can nurture talent, make good use of them, and sell them on for a profit.

In my playbook, if a player is worth £2.5 million you sell him for at least £2.5 million.

Why would you sell a player for £750K if they are worth £2.5 million then hope to earn more if the player is sold on?

Doesn't make a lot of sense to me but perhaps I'm reading it wrong.

Notts may just as well have loaned Macca out to Millwall for a season, Millwall pay increased wages to him, & Millwall could have also paid Notts a fee for every goal he scored.

If Millwall then wanted to buy him, pay Notts the £2.5 million, plus add ons for selling him on.

I'm suggesting the £2.5 million will be reached. £750k up front payment. Millwall pay Macca £300k up front signing on fee, which also accounts for the after tax wages that Notts are liable to Macca for, which means we are not taxed on that money.

When Macca plays so many games for Millwall, Notts get another pay day.

when Macca scores so many goals for Millwall,  Notts get another pay day.

Most importantly, when Macca is sold to a Premiership outfit, or gets there with Millwall. Notts have another significant pay day.

This is how some football deals are structured now.  Also the brother are very circumspect and don't share what is rightly sensitive data.  Notts will have several significant pay days to come.

Ed Francis mark II seems like a good signing, but players like him always need to be pushed. I think he’ll integrate well and should get game time in matches where we want to rest others. We’ve had a number of good loan players, but none quite like these two for a while. It’s unfortunate that we didn’t have a stronger squad, as they could have been the missing piece in a promotion push back to the Championship. Instead, they helped us maintain our position in League One.

    3. liampie

      liampie

there was a picture of them spending time whilst on international duty a few years ago, someone tweeted jack and he retweeted it saying they were catching up and had been talking about those days.

    4. Chris

      Chris

I told Jack's father when he got his first international cap, that we were proud of him.

Callum McGregor also deserves a lot of praise for how he's forged a career. He was heavily linked to Sunderland before they fell down the leagues and wasn't playing for Celtic. I always felt he would have benefitted more from a move to a good English club (not Sunderland). However, he's proven that his ambition and desire to be an important player for the club he supports and loves has paid off.

It's been nice seeing their careers; both had incredible talent when they came here on loan.

  16. So Now We Know. The real reason for England players tiredness is Uefa. The Governing Body is being Sued by the Top Leagues in Europe because it's over Filled the Footballing Calendar with To Many Matches. Which has Resulted in Players becoming Tired and therefore have a higher Risk of Getting Injured.

What the Premier League Fail Realise is that they feel it's Ok to send it's Top Teams to Play around the World in Money Grabbing Pre-Season games. Teams fly half way round the World to play games in Asia, Australasia and the Good Old U.S OF A. Their players aren't too tired for those Matches are they? A ticket to watch Manchester City play in the US will cost the American Punter $65 a Time. How Much Money Does Manchester United charge when the go galloping off on a Tour of the Far East?

In another Thread I have stated how Easy It Would be to Combat Footballer Fatigue. Make the Champions League just that, a Knockout tournament between only the Champions of Each Country. No Group Matches. The Same for the World Cup and Euro's just select the Top 16 Ranked Countries in the World/ Europe put them straight into the Finals. 4 Groups of 4 top two in each group qualify for the next stage. But Think of All The Money We'd Lose would be the Cry from Clubs/Countries. Well Either  Get Less Money Or Protect Your Players Health. You Can't Have It Both Ways. Which Option Do You Think Clubs Will Choose?

    1. Robbie

      Robbie

If there is anyone to blame for the footballers being tired it is the FA Premier League as far as I'm concerned.

We've talked about this in previous threads. I totally agree @Wheelbarrow repair man that the Champions League & Europa League should be knockout only, & only champions of the top leagues should represent their league in the champions league.

Europa League, which should  be changed to the Europa Cup, should be runners up or cup Winners only. No other versions of the Europa league should be allowed.

Future Euro international tournaments should be held at the start of the European season, after players have had a month's rest from the previous season.

If the top players can't make it, then I'm sure there will be plenty of takers who want to represent their Country.

    2. liampie

      liampie

the premier league has done a lot more to ensure good english players are coming through, there could always be more but i think it was far worse in the early 00s. one injury to the midfield i remember being made into a major issue, whereas now we have a lot of good midfielders. the fa needs to try to continue putting money into the grass roots.

    3. Chris

      Chris

I'm sick of hearing about why the players feel they didn't do well, or why they are tired. I do believe clubs need to make sure they only play fit players, instead of playing someone who is in need of rest. Issue, most players will still want to play. Some just want to play and if tiredness impacts their performance then excuses are thrown out.

There are times I feel we over play Aaron Nemane, his peformances massively dip when he looks knackered and considering how much running he can do in a game. It's only natural, it's just a case of he's very rarely rested - it took his form to dip last season for him to be given the time. I don't think ability shines as much when you are needing a rest, so the fault falls in various ways.

Over-mining, or the overuse of any natural resource, is a problem. Sooner or later, these resources will deplete, and we’ll have to depend on something else. If the money earned from these resources is spent wisely, things can remain as they were. However, many places don’t manage their funds well. When crime escalates and the authorities become corrupt, it can ruin what is still a beautiful place.

i know argentina used to be quite wealthy but i did not really know why or what changed it. there was a film a few years ago that was released where the main character moved to buenos aires in the 1880s as a way to escape being wanted in the uk. it was supposed to be based on a true story.

The photographs appear stunning. a time trip back to when life wasn't such a busy headache.

It's a shame that this type of class wasn't upheld, as I am sure it could have been a lot more popular than Paris in modern times. I have seen documentaries on YouTube about how rough Buenos Aires is now. Certain parts are very sketchy. And a place to steer clear of.

I’m on the fence about Luke Williams. While I think he’s a competent coach and agree with many of the previous points, I’m aware that his return could be a step backwards. On the other hand, it could also lead to further success. It felt like Williams had the potential to propel Notts forward and climb the leagues. Even though he left for Swansea City, his departure was understandable and he left with our blessings. His decision to move closer to his family was sensible. However, if he were to return one day, I would hope that the Notts board would insist that he settle in the area.

    3. liampie

      liampie

      no from me.

i dont mind that he left, i dont hold it against him because hes nearer to his family and getting us back to the football league is a job well done. but when you have a manager that leaves during a poor spell, is given an opportunity where he was not successful with elsewhere, staying for the season and trying to fix the defence would have made me reconsider my stance now.

he left, we really needed strong leadership and whilst i really dont blame him for leaving. i think there could always be a possibility that it could be repeated. i also think we are more inclined to move forward.

    4. Chris

      Chris

I hope that Stuart Maynard grows in the role as our head coach and manages to maintain his position for a few seasons, it would give us stability and make sure we are heading in the right direction, but football is a points based business, you have to win games and meet the standards outlined by the club.

Personally, I am very thankful for Luke Williams. He's a good coach and I wish him success. If he finds himself without a club and Notts are seeking a new head coach - I wouldn't be against him returning. I would prefer we moved on, no disrespect to Williams. I enjoyed hearing him speak about the players and things in general, but I am more hopeful we can identify people who bring something different.

I wasn't very keen on the reaction he gave to the players after we conceded two goals, I think against Forest Green. For me, this was the point where our season started to turn negative and further blows by losing Matt Palmer didn't help, but defensively we weren't as bad as we became after the 'talk' that took place after the final whistle.

It's harsh to blame him outright for the defensive issues we have, but it's fair to say he never seemed to have the answer. He got the best out of our players, but lost it after that point from the defence point of view. I would rather see the club look to bring in someone who wouldn't be likely to repeat defensive issues. Good defenders are essential due to the tactical setup implemented by Williams. I just don't think it would make sense to re-hire someone who wasn't able to tighten up the goals we leaked. Perhaps he could see how things were changing, but I do feel we lost confidence from a talk which wasn't needed.

good to see another youngster step up to a pro deal, but it goes to show that we need to start making these deals count for something. so many get a deal, only to be released without much chance.

Good to see a youngster, such as Cater Foxe get their first professional deal. I hope it gives him something to strive towards and maintain a passion for the game. It's very easy for some young players to fall out of love with football.

You have to use these things to push yourself further.

  18. Recently, I’ve begun taking regular walks every two weeks. It’s a great way to enjoy the outdoors and make the most of the improved weather. My walks have taken me to places like the Forest, Sherwood Park, and The Embankment.

I’m curious, do any fellow PON members also enjoy going for walks, whether regularly or occasionally?

Where do you prefer to go for a pleasant walk?

I don’t often go for walks; I usually walk out of necessity. However, from time to time, I should make an effort to find places where I can escape. Going for a leisurely stroll can only be beneficial, offering relaxation and a chance to embrace the surroundings. This is a contrast to simply trying to reach a destination and navigating through crowds.

    3. liampie

      liampie

clifton has some nice areas, the town centre of beeston is a nice area to walk around on the weekend. plenty to do also. my favourite place is wollaton park though, but wollaton as an area does have some nice walking routes even if you stick to the streets.

    4. Chris

      Chris

The Wollaton area is a really nice place to walk, especially Wollaton Park and the woodland area, which you can walk by two reasonably large lakes. I used to have regular walks with my brother around Wollaton.

One of the concerns surrounding places like The Arboretum is the presence of students engaging in drug use and other illicit activities, as well as homeless individuals consuming alcohol. I no longer like walking there, as the smell of weed is horrendous. The Forest is a nicer place to walk, since it's very open and less hidden. Most of the places I have walked are locations I stumbled across with my family.

The Embankment is a lovely area to walk. You can walk on the other side and bypass the City Ground to a nicer area where you can get lost.

      welcome to notts! ewan coleman.

    4. Chris

      Chris

It's a bit strange how we don't report on staff changes, as it is important to keep fans updated and in the loop. I am sure it's due to time and being busy, but these things are always best confirmed by the club itself.

I wasn't aware the club needed a kitman, but it's good to see we have one.

I also agree that it's nice to fit in people who are Notts within these types of positions. Mark Draper and Tommy Johnson taking part in our training sessions was a laugh. Did Tommy Johnson not scout for us? I know he went on to be a scout for clubs like Blackpool.

  20. I’m not suggesting that the transfer fee received for Macaulay Langstaff should be spent on anything specific, nor do I expect the board to allocate the funds in any particular way. I want to begin by recognising the significant investments that have been made and how Notts has been wisely utilising funds to enhance the club’s facilities.

What I’m asking is, if you had a say, how would you choose to spend the money?

Personally, I would consider making one or two high-profile signings to uplift the fan base following the departure of such a star player. I would also contemplate investing some of the money in purchasing land for our training ground.

I have no doubt that the money will be reinvested. We may not know the exact figures and might only be able to go off the reported £750,000. For a League Two team, this might not match the fee we would have expected. We don’t know if it’s more, but based on the reported price, I’m curious about how members would like to see it spent?

      allardyces tash

Before we sign any new players, some funds should be reinvested into the squad. I believe it’s more crucial to use a portion of the money to extend the contracts of some players. For instance, Jodi Jones needs a new contract. It would be beneficial to keep him here, and he would make a good vice-captain. Some funds could be allocated to recruit a striker, another attacking player, and a defensive midfielder. I’m not too concerned about a training ground, as the club can extend an agreement to use existing facilities. However, it would be lovely to have our own training pitches one day.

The club could consider making the stands more inviting. A fresh coat of paint and perhaps some inspiring artwork could be added. Not exactly in the style of the family stand, but something more like what the club did under the Trews with the walls near to the suites. It showcased a lot of history of the club.

    3. liampie

      liampie

after reading the roku site being listed for sale, i do think it would make a good place for us to own and have as a training facility which could be ran open to the public too, as a means to bring in extra revenue. i think that is more likely if the reedtz bought it themselves, i would have thought it would be out of our reach as a club and using macaulaylangstaffs fee would take the majority if not all of it. i honestly think the transfer fee could be better spent on signing a few more good players and keeping most of it for the next season.

offering new deals to certain players would make sense.

    4. Chris

      Chris

Ensuring we can afford the likes of Jodi Jones, would be a good option so that we can offer him a new deal instead of sitting on it.

I am not against the idea of some going towards buying player(s) but teams may try to get inflated fees because they know we have money. I think this will make it a task to replace Macaulay Langstaff, as the temptation to ask for x2 more knowing the bidder has money but is also trying to replace a goalscorer - might make them ask for silly amounts, partly in hope of retaining them but also maximising their profit.

A training ground would be costly, but there's land for sale.

Where the factories used to stand, near to BBC Nottingham and opposite the train lines, has a large amount of land which could be transformed into a decent base to train. I am not sure what the area/street name is called. Most of the old factories have been knocked down, but if it's true that Notts are looking at the Roku site then that would be more ideal as it would involve less work.
