Yes Andy Hughes played quite a few games for us as I remember around the years 2000-2001 I think, he was a central midfielder and quite a fans favourite.

I hope he does well at Leicester.

I wonder how many former players our fans would welcome back in a coaching or staff role. Not that we necessarily need them, as we’ve seen many, like Dean Yates when he was hired as a defensive coach, end up being blamed. I’m sure there’s plenty of talent out there that could make for an interesting staff directory.

At first, I made the same mistake, interpreting “their” as referring to Notts. I was puzzled as to why Crystal Palace, known as the Eagles, might have had a ground called The Nest. I had the impression that they resided in a nest known as an Eyrie.

    3. liampie

i never knew this either, the nest seems a strange name for a ground. it does not sound right to me.

Regardless of what others may say about Gareth Southgate, I believe he’s performed admirably in his role. It’s true that the team hasn’t lived up to expectations in this tournament, but a competent manager knows how to steer the ship in rough waters. I’m aware that some outspoken supporters attribute the changes to fan pressure. However, even Ivan Toney has expressed regret to Southgate for his late entry into the game. Initially, I might have agreed with the fans, but it’s clear that Toney understood the reasons behind the decision afterwards. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and this is mine.

    2. Robbie

      Robbie

Toney should replace Kane for the Netherlands match. Kane has had a long season and looks a bit leggy.

Ramsey replaced Greaves with Hurst in the 1966 World Cup and that was a masterstroke by Ramsey. The rest is history.

Greaves was regarded as the best striker in England at the time, and his omission did raise eyebrows.

i watched a news segment on youtube where a person actually shown we have progressed further more with gareth southgate than all the years prior. its not because we just have a wave of good talent but his insight as a coach and manager. tactically, he might have his mindset but there is no denying he is a big part of the england teams success.

  1. So it's been decided that the New Notts Fan Zone is being called the Nest. How Boring they must be something better or exciting more in tune with the Magpies. Going on the Old Internet I've come up with A Conventicle, A Gulp, A Mischief A Tidings or Tribe of Magpies. Any of those have to be better than The Nest. My Favourite one is A Tribe of Magpies. A Fan Zone called the Tribe of Magpies gives the impression of Fan togetherness and the Support of the Players and Club. The Nest Give me a Break. So my fellow PON Members what's your Favourite and Why?

Considering the owners are funding the whole project they were well in their rights to name it the Reedtz Brothers Appreciation Sanctuary! I’m sure some previous owners would’ve given themselves a name check (or added some sort of mural).

      I’d have called it McGoldrinck's…

The images of the football ground, The Nest, have an eerie quality and seem like they’re straight out of a nightmare. However, I appreciate Notts’ decision to name their fan zone after it. It’s a clever move and provides the hub with a social function, encouraging fans to interact and bond.

    4. liampie

      liampie

the nest is the best name i think the fan zone could have been called, it makes you feel a part of something and its where a lot of notts fans will flock before a game.

whoever came up with it deserves a pay raise!

  2. The Susie Dent Word of the Day Topic got me thinking about an whole Manner of Words and Stuff and I thought I'd add to them, and a for lot of these words the Americans are to Blame for butchering the English Language . Things can get very confusing.

I mean who writes a best Selling Book and titles it Fanny By Gaslight? What sort of Mental Images does that Conjure Up?

Of course a Fanny to an American is a Backside to a Brit.  She's got a Nice Fanny, You think How does he know? They only met a couple of Minutes ago.

Then  there's the English Guy who gets his wallet Stolen while in America. He reports it to the Police Hey somebody's Nicked Me Wallet. Somebody has taken a knife and cut notches into your wallet?

Losing your Cherry means something totally different to a Yank. There's an  English Lass who buys a big piece of Cake with a Cherry on the Top. Unfortunately as she takes a bite the Cherry Fails off and a Passing Dog eats it up. Oh No says the English Girl. What's a matter? asks her American Friend. I've just lost my Cherry to that Dog. ( for those who don't know, losing one's Cherry to an American means losing one's Virginity)

Mind you the Aussies are Just as Bad. The Best selling Sticky Tape in Australia is a Brand Called Durex. That's right we have Sellotape they have Durex. Can you imagine some  unknowing Big Aussie walking into W.H. Smiths and saying G'Day a Roll of Durex there, Giant Size. Talk about Do It Yourself.

Now my Fellow PON Members It's Your Turn what words or sayings do you know that could be taken the wrong way and are also Amusing.?

If an English person is looking for an American's apartment on the first floor they could be looking a long time because a First floor to an American is the ground floor.

Another American word is Zit Which means Spot. So when playing Soccer (as they call it) A Foul in the Penalty area will result in the Ball being placed on the Penalty Zit. Then of course you can't beat a Big bowl of Custard covered a Large Piece of Zitted Dick.

An Englishman who went to live in the States got himself a Personalized Car License Plate. Which had the word BOLOX on it. When asked by an American what the word meant, he was told it was English slang for Spot. Well the American arrives in England, goes to Boots the Chemists and says Excuse Me But Do You Have Anything For These BOLOX I Have On The Back Of My Neck?

  6. Notts has been successful in retaining key players for a while now. There was a sense of disappointment when Ruben Rodrigues left on a free transfer to join Oxford. However, this was offset by the permanent signings of Jodi Jones and Dan Crowley. For the most part, the club has recruited players to heighten the anticipation ahead of the new campaign. The departures of Kyle Cameron, potentially Macaulay Langstaff, and to some extent, Tiernan Brooks, do leave one wondering who might be next.

The crucial aspect, in my opinion, is to ensure that the excitement generated by new arrivals outweighs the disappointment of the departures.

Regardless of your feelings about players leaving and potential arrivals, bear in mind that once the season kicks off, everything else becomes a distraction. The primary focus should be on appreciating the players while they’re with the club, whether we win, lose or draw. We are a club with a commitment to progress, and we need to get that right before we can hope to retain players for longer periods.

After giving it some thought, I believe Notts will pinpoint the remaining gaps that need to be filled and will proceed to recruit the quality we require.

After a few days, most of those who are upset will come to their senses. It’s just the usual ones who thrive on such situations to spread more negativity. The club is in good hands; we just need to keep building.

    3. Fozzy

      Fozzy

We all knew that Macca would be in demand this summer and most thought at the end of last season that he had played his last game for us. I think people are feeling disappointed because of the false hope given to us after making him captain a few weeks ago, which hastened Cameron’s departure from the club.

I think there is a little bit of panic in the eyes of Notts fans as we have seen five players leave in the last few days, even though only one would have been classed as a first XI starter this season. Notts need to settle the fans nerves with a couple of signings in the next few days and all will be well again.

    4. TheSkipper

      TheSkipper

I try not to post when I feel my disappointment is driven more by anger. I consider myself a rational thinker, so I don’t naturally balance my expectations. This is Notts County, we have to accept the good and the bad in equal measure and enjoy the time we have with our favourite players.

  14. Have you ever wondered why you see some players with holes in the backs of their socks? I thought it was the work of moths but here is the reason.

    1. Chris

      Chris

It's all the rage, Jake was telling me about it - supposedly it reduces injuries, but you are not supposed to do it (he says).

I used to get told by my old duty head of year (managed my school's team) that socks help avoid injuries. I know if I were to ever knock a muscle or something like that, I'd rather it is tight and supported. God knows if it's just an excuse or an actual thing.

    2. liampie

      liampie

it makes me laugh, because they look so awful. does it really cause injuries because they are too tight? why do they have a new pair for every game, surely they get washed with the shirts? its just one of those things one person started doing and others are tagging along.

    3. allardyces tash

      allardyces tash

If there’s a scientific basis for it, then we should explore ways to make socks less tight rather than resorting to cutting them. It doesn’t seem appropriate for a professional sport.

Appointing Matt Palmer makes more sense, he should have been given the role from the start. The decision to change captains resulted in us losing one player and potentially a second who was likely to attract bids. I’m pleased for Palmer; I believe he will perform well in the role. I have no doubt that a quiet person can maintain their composure in moments when others might lose theirs. Just because he’s quiet doesn’t mean he won’t inspire the players.

    3. Chris

      Chris

It's a sensible decision. I see some fans on social media think we should have given it to someone like Jacob Bedeau or Matty Platt. I don't think we should consider them as vice captains yet, allow them to focus on their role in the squad before giving them any sort of leadership role. Any player would prove their worth in one of these roles when it becomes vacant, but I do believe Matt Palmer is a good choice.

As I have said in other discussions, he does communicate with the players during games. He's not silent, but he doesn't lose his head. He's focused and articulate about what he does; this should transfer over to his captaincy role.

I don't think the arm band will make him any less of a reliable midfielder, he's the type of player who might get overlooked, but I feel he will show he's no shadow.

    4. liampie

      liampie

it feels like getting a second vote for brexit, but i am glad matt palmer has been given it. captains are usually also a senior member of the squad who has been around and knows the ropes, unless you are signing a captain and they have requested it as part of the transfer we would always be looking at someone like palmer.

  15. Now Macca has gone to Millwall Notts will need a new penalty taker.

We have had two very successful penalty takers in the last few years. Ruben Rodriguez was our very successful penalty taker in our National League promotion season.

When he left to go to Oxford, Macaulay took over the mantle and although he didn't have many penalties to take last season he never missed one.

Now Notts will choose a new player to take on the responsibility, but who will he be?

My choice would be between Cedwyn Scott or Jodi Jones, but which choice of the Notts players would be your choice?

    1. Fozzy

      Fozzy

I would go with the same @Robbie. Depending on who is on the pitch at the time I would assume it will be Scott or Didzy if they are playing, but JJ also showed at Wembley that he isn’t afraid to take one.

    2. Chris

      Chris

Provided we don't give it to David McGoldrick, I will be happy.

I'm not trying to be negative towards McGoldrick, it's just of my view that someone else would be better. He's somewhat predictable, so I don't think he would make a good choice. Cedwyn Scott has taken them before and done well. Jodi Jones could be a good option, then we have Jata who could smash them into the back of the net. Yet, it wouldn't surprise me if Dan Crowley doesn't step up to take them.

    3. liampie

      liampie

whoever starts as the striker, so i would imagine it will be between scott and jatta.

It's a good interview. I got the impression he wasn't supposed to mention 'niggles' because he goes on to explain more that seemed unnatural. I think this is possibly down to further negativity from those who can't see we have to sell players in order to build further.

When the Reedtz came in they said this would be our business model, over time we have moved away from it and the 'money ball' term looked like it wouldn't be needed. However, it really is for a club of our size. Brentford have done wonders reinvesting in their transfers, it's what we need to be like. Yet, back to Stuart Maynard, naturally he would need to address the Macaulay Langstaff departure, I feel he shares our disappointment because I bet Maynard knew he could rely on Langstaff for goals.

We have other players who will thrive in the striker role, given the minutes and time.

    3. gtownjohnno

      gtownjohnno

Going in to the new season very soon.... I would really like the 11 players to join together for a team huddle... We haven't done that for several seasons now.... Does anyone know why it was stopped.... Are we really the only team that doesn't do it????..

    4. liampie

      liampie

@gtownjohnno i dont know but it does not harm to have the spirit. last time i remember was photos from the aston villa cup match when jack grealish gave his boots to one of our young fans.

stuart maynard gave a good interview.

  16. I would be quite upset unless the transfer fee was truly justified. An upfront payment of £700,000 is far too low. Even if potential add-ons could increase it to around £2,000,000, it would depend on how likely Notts would be to receive that money. In my opinion, £2,000,000 is a low price for a striker who can score goals when given the opportunity.

If he does leave, I hope Cedwyn Scott gets more playing time as a striker. He seems to be the best option, and we also have Alassana Jatta.

Selling our top striker doesn’t lessen the blow, but I do hope that Scott gets more time in the striker’s position. I would also hope that Notts reinvests some of the money from the potential sale of Macca into signing a promising young replacement.

Signing a good young replacement might alleviate some of the frustration. This all hinges on whether the rumour of Macca awaiting a medical at Millwall is true. One thing I’d like to add is that I’m surprised more clubs haven’t been linked to him. This gives me a glimmer of hope that all this might be unfounded. However, if it does happen, I’ve outlined my feelings on the matter.

There are some grumpy fans of Notts on social media. I find it hard to believe that true fans, who have seen his dedication, would deny him such a move. My view of him is based on highlights and the occasional full game that I have streamed. It’s clear that he possesses a quality that a higher-level team would eventually seek.

    3. Chris

      Chris

I think a lot of fans are just disappointed and may also have worries that we won't have a 20+ a season goalscorer.

When they both signed, I spoke to @ARLukomski, and he told me that he was more excited about the arrival of Cedwyn Scott. Scott is relentless with pressuring the opposition and often wins the ball back from doing this, he's a good finisher who I feel would do well in the striker role. I am seeing why ARLukomski felt this way, Macaulay Langstaff is a great striker but we have something a bit different, that should work out well.

Give Scott the time to shine.

  17. i am hoping the next signing addresses the keeper situation we have, sam slocombe is injury prone and tiernan brooks is untested but i would like to see that change. i just feel we need a stronger option to force competition between the keepers. i would like another cb, along with a wingback and a central midfielder that is not like what we have.

that would be 4 more signings, 27 players in the squad. giving us option to play the youngsters in the right environment.

rawlinson and randall may end up being released, which would open the door. i am hoping we avoid having a squad around 24 players in size and go further a large one with depth. thoughts?

Adding a striker, a midfielder, and two centre backs would be a good way to strengthen the team from here. We don’t need to worry about signing a goal scorer, but another striker would be beneficial.

    4. Fozzy

      Fozzy

Now need a minimum of 5 players.
Two (minimum one) right footed centre backs, a right wing back, a box to box midfielder and a punt on a young, quick, energetic striker.

Squad is paper thin at the moment and we proved last season that it was a mistake to go into the season with such a small squad as we burnt out all our players by Christmas.

It's great to see that Notts is getting the attention it deserves both as a place and club. Bought my first season ticket and can't wait to see the shiny new pitch get run through 😀

The future for Notts is looking bright, now the boys need to show us what they've got and put up a performance worthy of promotion.

Last season had its hiccups, and we always seem to end the season on a low note - let's change the script for once.

Langstaff's committment to this team is unwaivered. Fingers crossed the rumours of him leaving are just hear say 🤞

I imagine that the recent departures might have upset some fans who were eager to see those players on the field in Notts colours. Regardless of who’s here or not, it will be wonderful to see Meadow Lane packed with our supporters. Let’s remain optimistic about the club having a successful season.

With Macaulay Langstaff’s sale, I don’t foresee the sales increasing much beyond what has been announced. However, a few good signings and reinvesting some of the money might help boost the morale of the fan base.

  19. Playing Alfreton Town tomorrow evening.... The big question is.... Will Macca be in the squad???

I have a feeling that some fans might choose to skip the game now. However, it should be thrilling to see how the new signings perform. It should be a good match, it’s just unfortunate that Macaulay Langstaff won’t be part of it. If he had been, it might have instilled some confidence.

I don’t believe the sale of Macaulay Langstaff will influence who leaves tomorrow, but some supporters might express their concerns to the club officials about the sale. Regardless, we must move forward.
