Good morning itโ€™s a new week and a new month. White rabbits, etc.

The day hasnโ€™t started well for me, Iโ€™ve lost a filling so that means another visit to the dentist. Sigh.

I hope everyone else is ok. Have a great day,

  • I had a walk with Jake today, another excuse for him to look for more of those Premier League trading cards he has started collecting. He unpacked a signed Everton player, which is hand-signed and one of x amount. He even gave me one of Ian Wright, as they are including some club legends in the series, and it's a very nice card.

It's proudly in a plastic sleeve and top loader, so it's safe. I never did this when I was younger; I collected them and would look at the cards. I never really cared if they had value; I just liked having them.

It presented the perfect opportunity to pay a surprise visit to Super, and we intended to be there for about an hour, but we stayed much longer as we talked about things and caught up. Leaving just in time to get something that was being cooked back at home. The positives were my legs only seldomly hurting while walking, and I don't feel too bad.

A much more positive week than it had started.

Yes a very nice surprise.I wasn't expecting a visit & it gave me an excuse not to do any weeding or other garden work today.Anyway it wasn't exactly sunny and inviting in the garden.

Itโ€™s back to school tomorrow. Iโ€™m hoping the day goes quickly and doesnโ€™t feel like itโ€™s dragging. The first day back always seems to move slowly and can be a bit dull. Itโ€™ll be nice to catch up with my friends, but for me, the day really starts at 3:15pm.

Notts Women travel to fellow Division 1 team, (4th tier) Sheffield FC Women today for their 2nd group stage match of this season's League Cup competition. Kick off 2pm.

In their previous Group match, Notts Women lost to tier 3 side, Derby County Women. Notts will be hoping to get a win today to have a chance of qualifying for the knockout stage.

On Saturday Notts take on Fleetwood at Meadow Lane, how many links can we find between the two clubs, players, managers, coaches, owners etc.

Iโ€™ll start you off with Matthew Virtue-Thick (although I think heโ€™s dropped the last part of his name ๐Ÿ˜†) he joined us from Liverpool on loan in 2018 and made 13 appearances, he currently plays for Fleetwood.

Letโ€™s see how many links we can find.

  • Iโ€™ve only ever known one train station in Nottingham, and I donโ€™t like what they did to it when they fixed it up. It used to look really nice, but now it feels like theyโ€™ve mixed in new styles that donโ€™t match the old building. It looks a bit messy now.

Itโ€™s easier for taxis, parking and dropping people off, which is good. But theyโ€™ve messed up how the station looks, and thatโ€™s a shame. Trying to catch a train there can be really annoying. Sometimes they change the platform just five minutes before it leaves, and it makes everything stressful.

I donโ€™t understand why Nottingham is so bad at this. Other places seem to manage better.

A precautionaryย pitch inspection will take place at Meadow Lane tomorrow ahead of Saturdayโ€™s Sky Bet League Two fixture against Fleetwood Town, following remedial works to combat a rare fungal disease.

While a substantial amount of dead grass has had to be removed from the playing surface, we're confident it will be playable this weekend - however we are supportive of the EFL's wishes for a qualified official to carry out their own precautionary inspection (11am), along with a representative from the Sports Turf Research Institute, in good time ahead of the game. An update will follow thereafter.

The disease in question is a soil-based pathogen, which spreads rapidly and causes significant damage to perennial ryegrass. This was identified earlier this week by our ground staff and subsequently verified by independent plant pathologists.

Although robust preventative measures are embedded in our turf management programme, the disease - which originates in continental Europe and has recently been observed at several other clubs - has taken hold due to this summerโ€™s exceptionally warm and humid conditions.

Since the diagnosis, our grounds team have worked tirelessly to contain the issue and implement a recovery strategy - and we would like to stress that this highly unfortunate development is no fault of any individual or the club.

We expect the pitch to make a steady recovery over the coming weeks.

Transfer deadline day. What are we expecting? Any ins or outs? I would be surprised, but stranger things have happened. Maybe we will see some loans to the National League after today.

  • Just because Jatta has had is contract extended by another 12 months doesn't mean that the Club won't sell the player at the next available transfer window if another club makes an offer the brothers can't refuse.

All this extension is basically doing is keeping Jatta's value a little higher than it might have been. I still think that Jatta will be very marketable if he starts scoring again, & strikes up a good partnership with Dennis.

I think we've already picked up that the money earned from the sale of players goes into the running costs of the club, such as wages & running costs, & we may even see other players sold if the price is right.

Jatta could still leave in January @Robbie, but this means we're under less pressure to sell if the price isn't right. If he were out of contract in the summer, there would have been clubs trying to exploit that and sign him for a reduced fee in January. Now we can name our price (or just keep him).

I'm disappointed another striker hasn't come in for competition though, especially if we're playing two up top. I'm very happy with Dennis but we'll be very thin as soon as injuries and suspensions come into play.

Yeah, that Jatta could still leave in January is a given.

But the year extension is a massive pressure release which will have knock-on effects to MP's team selection, the media focus, and maybe the mood of the squad

Jatta turns 27 in January, his next contract could be the most important of his career/life. We should have a highly motivated player for the rest of the season/half-season.

This thread is to give you updates on important news regarding the Womens & Girls teams throughout the Summer and close season.

i have to agree that iorpenda looked very comfortable, i felt a bit nervous with him being on the team sheet as a starter but i thought he went about the first half with a lot of intent. the foul he drew, i think might have been given if he did not drop to the floor like a championship player.

it got a lot of fans backs up near me towards the referee but i think if he drawn more contact and went down naturally i do think it would have been given as a foul.

he worked very hard in a lot of the attacking play which was brilliant to see. thought him and matt palmer did a lot of work to encourage us to attack positively.

  • I agree @Sir Magpie that Tom Iorpenda played well in that first half. We all thought that it would be hard to replace George Abbott, but it does appear on this first league showing that he has slotted in well which is very encouraging..

He may not be the same type of player as George Abbott but he has a way of playing & style that could be very useful to Notts in the months ahead.

I'm sorry, I messed up. Sometimes I find it difficult to see what I actually write; I believe it's correct, and I could double-check it a million times and still feel that way. It's only when someone points it out. Usually, I run everything past @cheeky~k8, but I haven't done it for a while, so I didn't bother her with it.

    It should read:

It should read: "Tom Iorpenda looked right at home for the black and white army, away at Newport County.๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿป"

    ๐Ÿ˜“

We should see Iorpenda back against Tranmere. He's done pretty well so far, but personally I suspect he's a dangerous player for us. That means one who looks the part but won't contribute the goals, assists and wins we need from his position (he's playing in Didzy's role at the moment, to illustrate the point). I hope he proves me wrong, obviously.

I also feel a bit sorry for him. Is he a deeper-lying midfielder or an inside forward? I think the best answer to that is neither - with his energy, physique and athleticism he's more of a classic box-to-box midfielder. Today though, it seems you're either a No.6 or a No.10, definitely the way Notts have set up the last few seasons.

Where would Bryan Robson, for example, have played if he was in the premiership now?

Things are looking a lot tighter this round - @magpiejue is still top, but @Robbie and @super_ram are catching up. But there are still loads of players in touching distance of top spot, so it's all up for grabs still.

Despite it being the international break, there's still a round on Saturday so I'll post the fixtures tomorrow. Thanks for playing!

Notts take on Lincoln at Meadow Lane tomorrow. How many links can we find between the two clubs, whether itโ€™s owners, managers or players.

Iโ€™ll start you off with Ray Trew who was chairman of Lincoln City before buying Notts County for ยฃ1 in 2010.

Have a go lets see how many links we can find.

So No last minute signings on the last day of the Transfer Window. It would seem that a couple of Victories and holding on to Alassana Jatta, is enough to convince the Owners, that everything at the Lane is Hunky Dorey. But we Fans know it isn't. There have been many debates on this Site of what Players and type of Players the Magpies need to go for Promotion, and it would seem that Once Again the Fans have been Ignored. Poor Transfer Windows in January over the last couple of seasons have cost the Magpies, and this Summer Transfers haven't filled Fans with any sort of Confidence, from the Head Coach, to the D.O.F. and Poor Player Recruitment.

So are the Brothers Over Confident and convinced that the Present Squad is capable of delivering Promotion to League 1? Are they hoping beyond hope that this Cheap Squad will fulfill their Dream of Notts Climbing the Football Pyramid? Or is it that they have spent to much money on the Club's Infrastructure and can only afford to bring in Free Agents and Loanees? While the expense of a Hybrid Pitch at the Lane has produced a Top Playing Surface , was it really necessary and cost effective to repeat that Expense at the New Training Ground? All ready this season Results have shown a Drop in match attendances at the Lane, this maybe because the Club have lost a few of the floating Fans and the Hardcore still remain, but How Long will it be, before even the Hardcore start looking for other things to do on a Saturday afternoon, if Results Don't begin to Improve Dramatically?

  • I'm talking about Paterson. We don't know yet if he's the right man or how it'll all work out but it's clear that he's giving it his best.

Braver selections, substitutions and interviews than we saw from Maynard - fighting back from 1pt in 9 to go 7pts out of the next 9. Being the one to represent the club in all the interviews, handling some probing and awkward questions, which are really for the technical board. Just generally showing real commitment and passion. That's what I mean by gumption. If more players in the squad had the same spirit we'd have nothing to worry about

As @Chris, says, the right players were probably were not available. We have been down the route of panic signing for the sake of a signing and it hasn't worked. I think it's better to manage till January and have a clearer idea what we actually need and make a push for promotion in the second half of the season.

A great win on the road for Notts at such a a tough place to go & get a result. Credit has to go to the players for the 2nd half display.

A touch of class from Jatta helping to st up Notts's winning goal was just the reason why Notts have missed him for 5 games.

For your PON Man of the Match I have selected the starting 11 plus three substitutes for you to make your choice.

  • I know the whole no shots thing first half wasnโ€™t great but at the same time Tranmere really didnโ€™t look a threat either and they only scored through our needless sloppy play.

Our reaction was good though and I thought the second half performance was very impressive. I liked how we didnโ€™t just sit back when defending the lead, we were definitely a lot more pro-active off the ball which I really did like. Even in the last minutes of the match when the Tranmere defence had the ball we had Dennis, Jatta and Grant all pressing hard and they were backed up by the wingbacks and midfield. I think weโ€™ll create some good chances just from making opposition defenders/midfielders rush when on the ball.

Set pieces still make me nervous, I think we got a tad lucky at times. Yes, some good blocks in there and you definitely need that but we still arenโ€™t great when it comes to clearing the ball it all seems a bit panic stations to me.

You can laugh now itโ€™s over but Martin Paterson was getting really wound up at the end of the match about the ref not blowing for full-time. Stoppage time is and has been โ€œa minimum ofโ€ฆโ€ for as long as I can remember, so if the 4th official displays 5 minutes but 6 minutes are played that is completely within the rules.

Anyway, I seem to be able to find more positives with each passing match now, my optimism levels are growing!

Paterson handled things well after the break, making the right decision to bring Gordon on for Cotter, who had a tough first half. The switch paid off straight away, with Gordon looking lively and finishing with real confidence. Dennis also deserves credit, heโ€™s got a knack for being in the right spot and is quickly becoming a key part of the team. Tranmere did push us late on, but we stayed calm, which hasnโ€™t always been the case in past games.

Roos made a vital save near the end, and the back line looked more settled than usual. All in all, it was a solid showing away from home and should give the lads a boost going into the next set of matches.

I would say it was the best performance so far this season. Tranmere were quite happy to allow us to play, and it felt more like a League One game. I did think they were very poor defensively, but on the break, especially those quick counters where they outnumbered us, it made me nervous. At least until they had two or three attempts and blasted them into the away end, nowhere near the goal.

Until they took the lead, I honestly thought it would be us who would score before anything came from them as a serious threat.

It was a sucker-punch moment, which seemed to drop the lad's head, but despite this, I thought we ended the first half somewhat encouragingly with how we played. I also can't stand Josh Davison. His attempts to fool the referee were very frustrating, and a lot of Tranmere Rovers players tried to play the dirty side of football. Relentless pushing, aggressive diving, and careless elbow jabs. I was pleased that we gave it back when we could, I think it was Jacob Bedeau who left a little on a challenge he faced, which caused the tackling Tranmere player to rethink that antic.

In the second half, Notts played some beautiful football, and we did look keen to get on the scoresheet.

While it wasn't perfect, it was a huge step forward in terms of performance, and having seen the majority of games, I thought if things had clicked, we could have thrashed them. I do give credit to Tranmere for keeping the pressure on us; their final 10โ€“15 minutes made it difficult viewing.

Jake also said to me, "We are awful at time-wasting," and we really are. I don't condone it to the point where you look like Newport, or some of the sides we have seen this season, but sometimes you have to take the pressure off defending by running the clock down.

Upon the whistle blowing, my first thoughts were to upload the full-time match graphic and then look around to see the fans reaction. It does become a bit depressing when you see fans unhappy or those who let frustration get the better of them. It was great to see the celebrations and the players returning to properly celebrate in front of us, especially with the Tranmere players watching.

Sweet F.A No it's not an Endearment to the Football Association, but was the title of the 1970's British Pop Band the Sweet Music Album. Originally it was a saying which has become well used for over 150 years in Britain and the full saying was Sweet Fanny Adams and came to represent the Slang phrase I Don't Know Anything, or Nothing regarding questions asked on certain subjects. I Know Sweet Fanny Adams About It. It was also used as a Term used by Sailors of the Royal Navy.

Sweet Fanny Adams was a Real Person. Fanny was a middle child of George and Harriet Adams, they lived in the village of Alton in Hampshire. Fanny was described as a Happy Child who enjoyed chatting to people and was always smiling. Alton where she and her family lived was famous for it's Beer Brewing, and in the 1860's was surrounded by Hop Fields. With the Community being small people knew everybody else. On the 24th of August 1867 Fanny her best friend Minnie Warner and her 5 year old sister Lizzie were walking towards Flooded Field to go and play, on the road the girls were met by one Frederick Baker a newcomer who had lived in Alton for a few months. He spoke to the girls who all knew him, after awhile he asked Fanny to accompany him to the next village of Shalden. Fanny refused stating her wish to stay with her sister and friend. Baker then offered her a half penny to buy sweets if she would go with him, again Fanny refused. Baker then turned his attention to the other girls and got the same No reply. So Baker using the advantage of his height and strength, simply picked up Fanny and carried her away. Minnie and Lizzie ran back to Minnie's house and told her Mother Martha what had happened, as there had never been any crime in Alton during her life time Martha Warner thought her daughter was simply joking or telling stories. Seeing Martha's disinterest, the girls went outside playing. Thinking that Fanny would be safe with Frederick Baker after all.

Later as Lizzie made her way home, she was stopped by a Mrs Gardener, who asked where her sister was. Lizzie told her what had happened, Mrs Gardener took Lizzie home as quickly as possible where she repeated her story to her Mother. Harriet and Mrs Gardener along with other people searched for Fanny, but found no sign. It wasn't until a few days later that War Veteran Thomas Gates came upon the Severed Head of Fanny on the Top of Two Hop Poles. It took the Police several more days to find the rest of Fanny's dismembered body. In the meaning time Baker had been arrested due to eyewitness reports. He stated he hadn't killed Fanny saying he had left her at the Village gate. However after searching Bakers Desk in the Solicitor's office where Baker worked as a Clerk they found his Diary on the page dated August 24th was the line Killed a girl. Baker was tried at Winchester Court and was found Guilty by the Jury and was Hung on Christmas Eve, 1867 watched by a crowd of over 5,000 people.

But how did the term Sweet Fanny Adams come about? It morphed into the saying as we know it by Sailors comparing their tinned meat ration of cold mutton, to the remains of Fanny Adams. Of course Fanny Adams as turned into F.A. two entirely Different words nowadays.

  • Good luck to him, he earned that - making the play-offs is something on his CV, to go with what he did at Wealdstone. I hope him and Alves do well.

I think his strength is, as he says, on the tactical side - he does seem to have a good understanding of the game. Doubling down too much on this strength was his undoing at County IMO. He became too clever with his team changes and too much focus on game tactics seem to neglect all those other things which make for winning football - the psychological side, the aggression, the toughness, earning a shirt and the right to keep it.

Everyone is on a learning curve with what they do, so maybe he'll find this balance at York and get them back in the EFL. That will definitely be their target and expectation.

I've been looking further into this appointment, and Stuart certainly picked himself one Hell of a Challenge. Apparently according to York City Fans their Owner, buys players without conferring with his Head Coach, which seems the Previous Coach Didn't like and one of the Reasons he left, or was sacked sounds like a situation not unlike what's going on over the other side of the Trent. Good Luck Stuart, seems like you're gonna need it.

Stuart Maynard took on a tough job. He stepped in after a head coach who had led Notts back into the Football League. That was never going to be easy. He did what he could with the squad and the situation. I hope he does well at York City. He deserves a fair chance.
