very big move for him, i liked him as a player and thought he did well for us. only issue is the way he was used. he should have been played outright as a striker. good luck to him.2 points

Yes Piethagoram, I think the best team lost when we played Brescia in our first Anglo-Italian final at Wembley. McSwegan should have buried that chance in the 1st half, the handball by their player that should have been a pen & Charlie Palmer's effort that was blocked on their line in the dying seconds of the match from another long throw from Andy Legg. Then of course there was Steve Cherry's unfortunate mistake that led to their winning goal.2 points

I had memorable away trips to Brescia and Ascoli Paul Devlin's equaliser at Ascoli is as clear in my mind as if it was yesterday. Turning his man and volleying a bullet in to the top right hand corner from 25 yards I also remember lunchtime drinks in the piazza in Ascoli with Derek Pavis and John Mountney.. talking about the madness of the Brescia final, when we needed a goal, Mick Walker took off McSwegan for Agana!2 points

It’s a disappointing appointment. If he fails to manage their cobbled-together squad, this could turn out to be the worst decision in years.2 points

I don’t think it’s a wise decision, but I haven’t seen many complaints. I believe Steve Cooper was capable of keeping them up. It’s an odd decision to make just before Christmas.2 points

I have no words about Steve Cooper being fired. Fans of Forest should be upset with their club’s choice, but they probably won’t be.2 points

A big welcome to @StanfordPie we’d love to learn a little more about you, how long have you been a Notts fan?1 point

I've reserected this thread because VAR is in the news again, and I'm asking what's the point of VAR? The whole system needs a total revamp, because in it's present state, it is not fit for purpose. The authorities should even consider suspending it. Every match that uses VAR there is controversy over a decision by the Referee or the VAR team. There is confusion over interpretation of the VAR rules. VAR is missing critical events in a game, then the authorities say VAR cannot rule on that incident VAR is becoming a total farce and changes need to be made. I believe VAR should be either allowed to rule on more incidents and the VAR officials given more powers, otherwise trim VAR down to goal line decisions and ruling over yellow and red cards only. World football really needs to address the VAR problem and the FA need to be leading on this too.1 point

I have such great memories of our grand old stadium at Meadow Lane. I can remember when we played Everton in the FA Cup at home on a wet day in March 1984, standing on the Cop getting wet through. The ground was absolutely packed with 10K Everton fans. We lost to an Andy Gray header he headed in only a few inches off the ground. When I was a boy I would stand at the front of the Cop, behind the goal. When I grew taller, I would watch Notts standing on the County Road side or pop side. There was a large step at the back of the lower tier that you could get a good view from standing at the half way line if you got a place there. Spent many years standing. Never sat down until it became all seater. How many of you remember our old ground and where did you watch the games. Did you prefer to sit or stand?1 point

I wasn’t aware he had transitioned into coaching. Working in an academy requires a lot of dedication and a passion for shaping talent. His message suggests he’s well-suited for this. I wish him all the best.1 point

The Anglo-Italian Cup was a competition played intermittently between English and Italian clubs between1970 and 1996. In total Italian clubs won 15 and English clubs 6, Notts County being one of the only 6 English clubs to win it. The competition proved lucrative for Notts County, reaching two finals and winning in the 1994/95 season. Incidentally, Notts were the only English winners when the competition was held on four consecutive years in the 1990s Sadly the tournament was discontinued after the 1995/96 season.1 point

I predict a solid win if our performance against Stockport continues. I was so impressed. However we need to be more precise in the final third.1 point

The signs are that It looks like it's going to be a really good attendance for the vitally important Boxing day clash at home to Rovers. The drawing power of this team under Luke continues. Really hope this game will prove a turning point for us to get back on track after our recent poor form. .1 point

Yes it was in the final against Ascoli which we won 2:1. A massive long throw from Andy Legg in the first half. Tony Agana claimed a slight touch and ref saw it as a goal. Andy could certainly throw it long. Caused loads of problems for Ascoli in this match.1 point

We’re unaware of the mental condition of some of these individuals, they might simply require assistance. I don’t believe filming people merely because they’re impolite, noisy or otherwise irritating is beneficial or productive. This doesn’t excuse their behaviour, but I think those who attempt to claim moral superiority are equally at fault for seeking attention.1 point

Steve Cooper’s dismissal doesn’t matter to me, I believe he’s better off. It was always going to be a challenge for him, especially as the club’s recruitment is essentially whoever their owner prefers. I think Cooper will find a suitable project. He performed a miracle by taking them from almost certain relegation to League One to the Premier League. That’s the gratitude he receives.1 point

Yes, JohnTheBost ,in 1992, the Anglo-Italian Cup was re-established & revamped for second-tier clubs. The Italian representatives were Serie B teams.1 point

I don't know much about it, my parents have talked about it and I have seen it mentioned before. I don't know much else aside from that, what division do Italian teams enter? Serie B and C?1 point

I understand. The Anglo-Italian Cup did provide a nice opportunity for a short break. While Scotland might not have the same allure, it would be good to see the cup return, as long as the fixtures don’t cause too much disruption.1 point

Doncaster when we played them at their ground earlier in the season, sort of reminds me of how we have been as of late. Struggling with self-assurance and severely lacking in organisation. So, they should be much tougher, but the good thing is how we will be at home. Notts tends to control the game much easier. I do feel Dan Gosling is running out of time to impress and with the midfield being the area where we would hope to see more creativity - I can't help but feel we haven't quite utilities him. He's perhaps the only change I would consider, provided he's fully fit. He's been here long enough to really make his first start now. I won't be at the game, so I will be relying on those who do make it to provide their insights into the match.1 point

Neither of them looked great @Chris, I could see the second coming a mile off. However, in our general play we looked less like an accident waiting to happen than in recent weeks, and that was due in part to the much improved assistance and movement in midfield. Against Harrogate they were constantly passing it back to the keeper because there was nowhere else to go, and it always looked a matter of time until a pass went astray. Yesterday was a world apart from that.1 point

I don't want to be negative, but the highlights from a defensive point wasn't great with the goals, it did sound like Aden Baldwin did very well, but why did we leave so much space open for their first goal? I showed @cheeky~k8, and she asked me if the Notts players were ready for the corner. The second goal (penalty), Tobi Adebayo-Rowling gave me shades of Richard Duffy. Wait, that might be harsh, but I'm sticking with it. Just knock it out or draw a foul, don't do what happened. Anyone else usually would have been slaughtered on social media and I don't think that is needed. Yet it was awful, and is a talking point for us to mention as I can't believe he made such a comical error. It's worse than Richard Brindley's mistake a few games ago, but then you see the way we attacked. There was a lot more effort. Our keepers have made a considerable amount of saves, putting us within a joint third of the league. It really does show that Aidan Stone isn't the issue. I'm not dwelling overly on the issue because I do acknowledge that good teams do cause problems, and the overall performance did sound 100% better. We need to be a bit more careful on the ball though.1 point

I agree. Doncaster will have improved since then, but these are the matches that we have to win, and this match is vital to see us end our run of defeats. I'm confident that we will do just that on boxing day, hopefully in front of a big crowd.1 point

A much improved performance from Notts. Our work rate, fight and desire was excellent but we for all of our possesion, we didn't create as many clear cut chances as we probably should have. We were a lot better on the ball than the last few games. We played through their first press well, moving the ball quickly between Baldwin, Cameron and Bostock. JB, Austin and Crowley were all picking up space in the centre of midfield and driving forward with the ball, something that has been lacking the last few games. Our work rate in winning the ball back was brilliant. Aldershot showed that you have to battle to stifle Stockport and we did that. We didn't allow them to go up a level at the start of the second half and we kept plugging away in hope of an equaliser. However, Stockport defended their penalty area very well. They sit in their defensive shape well when faced with pressure. Jones crossed for Langstaff which he couldn't quite get his leg too, and then a Jones cross just missed Didzy and Macca. The one chance we should have taken came through excellent work rate by Aaron Nemane, winning the ball off Ethan Pye, squaring for Didzy who should have scored. Looking back on the highlights, it was quite a tame effort. Either corner and not the centre of the goal, and it's in. I thought Brindley had his best game in a while and kept Tanto Olaofe mostly quiet for the first half. He also cleared one off the line. Baldwin also had a good game, bringing the ball out of defence and playing quick passes between himself, Cameron and others, something we haven't done the last few games, where players haven't been showing for the ball giving Baldwin and Aidan Stone no options. Stone himself had a good game, saving well from Wootton and looking calm and assured on his line. The two goals came from us heading it out for a corner unnecessarily and then switiching off from the corner, and then Tobi losing his footing, allowing Stockport in on goal which lead to their penalty. Stockport were getting overrun in midfield and so they subbed on Akil Wright for Olaofe in the 2nd half, meaning Odin Bailey went in attacking midfield, pushing Madden up front with Wootton, but we still were seeing a lot of the ball and pressing forward. However in the penalty area, we just couldn't seem to connect on the end of a cross or muster enough space for a shooting opportunity. Sometimes Didzy and Macca couldn't get the ball out of their feet. The one time Didzy did, it ended with a goal. Both teams were missing key players. We were missing Macari and Palmer, along with players like Scott and Bajrami. I know they were missing Collar, Sarcevic, Barry and Southam-Hales. A noticeable difference was the bench in which they had options to change the game and we didn't, which is why I think we didn't make our first sub till 80 minutes and most of our bench was made up of defensive options. Something that will improve come January. A hugely improved performance with good fight and work rate shown. Disappointing not to get something but encouraging signs to take into the next few games. The players deserved their ovation at the end of the game. The away end was one of the best I've been in1 point

I understand your lack of interest in the happenings across the Trent. Teams, as we know all too well, can cycle through managers rapidly. It was indeed refreshing that Steve Cooper received support last season. There might be more to the decision this time, but the only remark I can make is that it’s regrettable.1 point

Doncaster Rovers has shown some improvement since then. I can’t envision them being as disorganised, but on paper, you would think the game should favour us. The problem is, games aren’t played on paper, and not everything is as straightforward as it appears. I just hope we can secure the result we need to keep our position in the top half.1 point
-
I share your hope that Doncaster hasn’t improved significantly since we last played them at their ground. Doncaster was dismal, and Notts played some excellent football. I don’t anticipate it being as straightforward, but being at home and familiar with their style should be advantageous. Luke Williams has spoken about learning from past performances, so ideally, this will be the perfect opportunity to demonstrate this.1 point
-
@Joshua "I don’t particularly enjoy bringing budgets into the conversation as they don’t provide a fair basis for comparison." In the National League, Stockport's budget was nearly twice the size of Notts. Perhaps the quality of Stockport's bench reflected that last night Both of Stockport's goals scored by ex Notts players1 point

I understand, considering all the discussions and outcomes. The timing? It might have been improved, their owner could have given him more time, but football is about achieving the right results.1 point

I think it’s a strange appointment and the sacking seems to be just a move to bring in someone for the sake of it. Steve Cooper has done well with Forest. They can spend as much money as they want on the players they sign, but they are only at a certain level compared to other established Premier League teams. Cooper has done well so far. I don’t see how Nuno Santo is a step up. He’s been lucky in English management to have moved from Wolves to Tottenham because he hasn’t looked anything special and just a very generic manager.1 point

i think its mostly a lack of concentration and maybe ability to handle pressure, but i do mark stallard makes some very valid points. we need to rethink our tactics for away games i think, as the high press and 3 centre backs leaves us open and we have seen similar mistakes since adapting to it. either changes or people putting more effort to defend.1 point
